I have really taken a liking to this show over the last few months. A few weeks ago I saw an interesting discussion about the fact that the setting is actually a post apocalyptic earth (http://adventuretime.wikia.com/wiki/Mushroom_War). Hadn't really picked up on it before reading that, but its pretty cool.
In reply to CFSBrawl, #11: Yeah, they called it the great Mushroom War, and because of it's happening a big chunk of the planet is missing. In several episodes that show the back stories of the more human characters, for example the Ice King and Susan Strong, you can see how they had survived the Apocalypse in their own way. The Ice King falls prey to the curse of his ice crown which grants him unlimited power over ice and gains a longer life from it, but he looses his wife to his dementia from the crown's curse. He is a truly sad but extremely deep character. Susan Strong's "people" if you can call them that have mutated into fish and have adapted to the life of living underground, similar to people living in the Vaults after the Nuclear War in the Fallout series but in a more cartoon aspect. Susan herself seems only to have strayed from humanist features in the sense that she is extremely large in build for human. Though she has survived in these post apocalyptic underground dwelling retaining her humanness, she has a poor concept of life, morality, communication, and adaption on the outside world, and she slowly has to learn these things in her own way in order to return her and her people . No one in this post apocalyptic world though is unaffected, but this fact leads to some great character ideas, builds, falls, and branching of stories.
I definitely enjoy this show because I was there when the pilot came out in 1999, but also because of the show's journey to reveal interesting back story and attributes about each character to further a slightly concealed plot. This show has a wonderful mix between goofy nature/surrealism and seriousness/romance that leaves me on the edge of my seat either laughing or in tears.
For my favorite character, I have to say that it is Finn the human, for I can relate with him more than anyone else on the show. He has a constant strive to do right and is capable to put his life on the line for the ones he cares about. Sadly though, Finn is another tragic character on this show, for he never knew his human parents and feels he is the only human left alive on the planet, which he knows is not true once he finds Susan Strong, but she has her own agenda to keep to underground in Beautopia and Finn chose to stay above ground with his friends, so Finn is still alone in that aspect. Also, Finn remains in a constant search for a relationship with a girl, specifically Princess Bubble Gum, which lasts a good while when Bubble Gum is turned into a 13 year old from the Lich saga until she grows back into an 18 year old in order to rule her kingdom, in turn causing her to completely break off all romantic ties with Finn for good. Afterwards, Finn meets the Flame Princess and falls into love all over again, but in tragic style, he can't be around her without her flames burning him. Once overcoming this obstacle, he then learns he can't even kiss her with Flame Princess burning too hot and destroying the rest of the planet.
Now, why would I like a character so stuck in the throws of tragedy? Simple, Finn is the hero and an optimist. Finn won't let anything hold him down. He is just a kid, alone in the world, but he won't stop until righteousness prevails. Though Finn is not the strongest, smartest, or most agile hero around, Finn the human is a hero with a heart.
I enjoy this series a whole lot, especially after seeing the short years before the cartoons was out. I'm a fan of random cartoons and this one takes the cinnamon bun! I can't wait to see what more the creators will surprise us next, especially after the King Worm episode!
