What is Pottermore? Pottermore allows fans of the Harry Potter to explore the series through offering -books in “an online reading experience unlike any other.”
At the moment there is a way to try and get signed up for the beta by finding the Magic Quill each day. There is a clue, and you have to use your knowledge of the series (or Google-fu) to find the answer. Once you find the answer you plug it into a specific web address.
Once you get in, you don't get to access the site right away, instead you see something like this:
But you may be asking yourself what exactly you can do in Pottermore, and here is a short list of what we can expect. (Taken from a Leaky Con attendee)
We will get information on other schools in the Wizarding World, all around the globe. You can buy animals in Hogsmeade For the first book, there are 44 new sections of information. We got a preview of the info on McGonagall and Hufflepuff, and they're both extensive. We could barely read it though. You have to open a bank account at Gringotts, and you get 175 galleons, I think, to start off. Diagon Alley and Gringotts are extremely detailed from the information we get from the book. You get a list of things to buy and you can go buy them. The shops contain more than just the items you need, and they all apparently have a role in some part of the experience. In Ollivander's, you have to answer a bunch of questions and, based on your answers, you get a wand. There are over 33,000 combinations for wands! You can collect and trade chocolate frog cards on the train You can duel other students for house points. There's a tally of points in your common room. You can brew potions and gain house points We're not only getting info that Jo always had in notes, she wrote some exclusive new content. She's still working on the information we get. Philosopher's Stone will start in October, and Chamber of Secrets will start early to mid 2012. The only downside I saw was that we won't be able to choose our own usernames. We'll get a list of 5 usernames to choose from; each of them consist of words relating to the HP series, like "GalleonWizard" or something. They're doing this for safety reasons, because they want to protect kids and keep it family friendly. There will be no fanfiction or chat rooms. But you can add friends. We got to see the official Pottermore house crests, and Ravenclaws will be happy to know they've got the prettiest one (in my opinion)! They were all very nice though. I couldn't take pictures, unfortunately, but it'll probably show up online at some point.
I literally just got home from watching Deathly Hallows Part 2 in IMAX and it really had me choked up. I have been a huge Potter fan since childhood and Pottermore seems like it has serious potential to continue the franchise beyond the books and movies. I have signed up from the beta but, based on the info you posted, it seems I have a lot of catching up to do. Will post again on this thread once I get a grasp of everything thats going on. Thanks for summarizing all the info!
I didn't know about the Magical Quill thing! I will be trying my luck at it tomorrow. Even if I have to wait until October, though, I am so excited to check this site out! It looks like it will be amazing XD
I'm confused. When am I supposed to answer this trivia question? Yesterday and today it says that registration is closed. Do I have to come to the site at midnight or something?
I was wondering the same thing. I will start at midnight, I suppose. One more question, though: Is it midnight U.S. time or midnight U.K. time? When J.K. Rowling did her live announcement, I missed it cause I didn't realize it was at noon London time. I'm an idiot, but I would like to get this one right. XD
It has potential, but I dont know if I personally have the time for it. Im 19. I grew up as harry grew up. Thats why I loved the books so much. This will keep the books for the next generation/
I felt like this last movie was the definitive end of Potter (I grew up with it as well) so I don't know how to feel about Pottermore. But I'm sure I'll be sucked in anyway so thanks for the information, I've been very curious about the whole thing.
I hope the last movie isn't the definitive end. The series is so well written, and has some really good life lessons to teach. Now, if you meant that it is the end of new content/books/movies, I still hope that isn't true. The end of the last book still left more questions unanswered.
I would give my left arm for there to be more (a Marauder-era prequel in particular would be amazing) but it genuinely seems like J.K. is finished with writing the novels and I'm satisfied with everything if this really is it. So I guess I will always hold a candle for HP and hope for more, but I feel like I've gotten closure.
I love how serious that sounded. Harry Potter is serious business to this generation ^^
