I just took a look at Ben's journal about the new site layout and dear god there are some pieces of shit here.
I, personally, like the new layout.
There are seriously people on Ben's journal straight up saying "Hey, fuck you!" Posting rude gifs and saying some of the meanest shit I've seen people say on this site. You wanna know the worst thing about it? Those things are plus modded. People are ripping apart this guy that has been here for years and has worked countless hours bringing this website to you. When you look at this post, thank Ben. When you probably inevitably neg-mod this post, thank Ben. When you reply in a hostile knee-jerk manner to this post, thank Ben. These people are terrible and make me sick and it makes me incredibly disappointed in the Rooster Teeth Community, a community that I have lauded for years as the best on the internet.
Changes bring out the worst in a community. You should have seen the backlash one Bioware writer got for merely suggesting their RPG's have an option for players to skip over combat scenes (since players do mash the X button to skip dialogue most times) and the fanbase tore her twitter account a new one. It was obscene... and when a senior dev stepped in to reply to a remark where one fan called this writer "A cancer on Bioware", the Dev called the guy a dumbass. The 'dumbass' then started a hate campaign against Bioware because of how hurt his feelings were....
Do I like the changes? Not entirely. Slightly, they have their pros. But the change is rather jarring. I can adapt. Would I say such rude things to Ben? No.
Unfortunately the majority of the internet lack self-control. They just bash post the first thing that comes to mind when provoked without stopping to think and express their opinions reasonably. I don't want to come off as smug, but it really makes me feel better about myself knowing I have more restraint than others in this regard.
Attacking accomplishes nothing. Once you've made a hateful remark, it sticks. Even if Ben changes it back, (which by way of principle alone, he shouldn't) would ANYONE who rage'd at him apologise? Nope.
Rooster Teeth is supposed to be better than this. This community is supposed to be better than this. This is like people attacking Burnie en masse because they don't like something on RvB. We don't do that to our own.
The issue is that one of the Site Mods held a poll about this particular version of the upgrade... and most of the people who have been here a while said NO try something else.
He ignored it and apparently knows what we want better than we do.
THAT is why I'm pissed off; THAT is why I'm not paying sponsership anymore, and THAT is why most of us are angry. He ignored the majority of the community.
"Supposed to be" is the operative part of that sentance. People are oh-so willing to attack someone who they consider faceless. Ben doesn't play any beloved character in the show, therefore he's fair game in their eyes. If you had the actor who plays a fan-favourite coding this, it'd receive praise.
Not really, if Gus ignored what the community said we'd be at his throat too... just with more respect because he acts professional instead of leaving troll-like responses to ANY criticism of his work.
Even though I'm willing to admit Ben doesn't deserve this kind of abuse, as a community member, I did take this as a betrayal. It is so alien compared to the preview, which was okay and useable, but as Wikia said, he ignored the majority of us and pandered to the needs of the minority.
To quote one of my all time favourite films, The Wrath of Khan, Logic dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
Facebook is popular because it's facebook. Turning Rooster Teeth into it won't accomplish anything. Frankly the new layout is so backward, it's likely to frighten new users away from signing up. I'm willing to admit, Ben is a decent coder... however, he could use a few Visual Design and User Interface lessons....
True. Although people toss the word 'trolling' around a lot, having this preview up for... what, 7 or 8 months? before disregarding the feedback completely to piggyback off a sucessful design is without a doubt just that.
And saying that just because he's been a web developer for x amount of years doesn't mitigate the fact that he blatantly flipped off the majority of the site.
I understand being upset. I'm not commenting here on whether or not that is justified.
Its the reaction that has upset me the most. There is zero justification for the incredibly rude and shitty things people posted on Ben's journal. The way you're doing it is correct, in my opinion. You don't like it so you won't use it or support it. That is the good, logical, well-reasoned thing to do in a situation like this and I commend you for it.
But the things people posted on that journal. There's no excuse for that shit.
I wouldn't disagree with the fact that many of the comments (decided by Ben and the staff) were "wrong," but there was so much nonconstructive criticism (e.g. "I hate it, it sucks, fuck you" etc) that it was nearly impossible to sift through every single recommendation. When it came to changes, there were people on both sides. Because it wasn't changed in a certain regard doesn't mean that they were ignored. For every decision there was someone who said "I like it" at least half as much as someone who said "I hate it." I'm more disappointed with the users of this site not for their blatantly rude and idiotic behaviour, but how half of them didn't know how to use their words like big boys and girls. If you have a problem, it's likely to be listened to when you present it in a calm and constructive manner. Accept the fact that the staff aren't going to do a whole re-format of the idea, so it's no surprise like "I want the old design" were ignored. I would ignore them too.
Most of the site is pretty level headed until you kick them in the balls.
Then they get pissed off like a hive of hornets and sting anything in sight, in this case, the 'poster boy' for the (GOD DAMN THIS TYPE LAG SON OF A BITCH) of the new layout.
"Oh you better not piss us off and do something some of us don't like cause if we do by golly we'll just...we'll just....WE'LL SAY SHITTY THINGS OVER THE INTERNET WE'D NEVER SAY IN REAL LIFE! ANONYMOUS IS LEGION! WE DO NOT FORGIVE! WE DO NOT FORGET! SUCK OUR DICKS AND DO WHAT WE SAY YOU MOTHER FUCKERS!"
No, I'm saying that when a Site Mod holds a poll and has legitimate results, the people who run this place and apparently value the community, should at least take a look instead of telling said admin to drop the issue.
Which is what happened.
I'm also loving how... well... half your age you're acting.
The fuck does a poll show? That someone can click on an answer?
They've been testing this and surveying this and getting feedback on this for months. I've been on this site long enough and have had enough experience with the RT people to know that they know what they're doing. I'm sure there's a whole fuckload more to it than a poll.
(Nice to see that the moment anyone has a legitimate argument, you go into using the same 'fuck you' tactic that you were complaining about earlier....)
It wasn't just a single forum poll; it was a legitimate questionnaire, and in the end, the majority of the people that participated were against this particular layout. It was ignored and they went through with this insult.
My beef is not with the layout (Though they could have done better or let us have the option to use the old one), and it's not with you despite your... rather brutish behavior... it's the fact that we the Community were ignored. And that is the most damaging thing you can do to a fan base. Ignore them.
My only hope is that we get updates from people other than Ben as the days go on.
There are seriously people on Ben's journal straight up saying "Hey, fuck you!" Posting rude gifs and saying some of the meanest shit I've seen people say on this site. You wanna know the worst thing about it? Those things are plus modded.
Present and accounted for.

To be frank, this isn't responding in a 'hostile knee-jerk manner'. This is me responding to months of ignored requests and lack of feedback. There's a difference between me simply coming out and telling someone 'fuck you' to their face for no reason and having a basis for it.
Guess I can't make that claim anymore, huh?
No, you can. Mostly because we're still trying to take care of our community despite the nonsense going on.
I think you missed his point. He's not talking about users like you who are actually using half-legitimate reasoning and arguments to the site's changes, but rather the people who are posting nonsensical arguments, completely un-called for insults and language, and all-around douchery. I wouldn't say that those people are "taking care of their community."
I'd agree with you if Mr. Davis didn't seem to be acting like I was one of those assholes despite me having explained myself in a very civil manner my opinion of the situation and the events that lead up to this powder keg of FLAME WAR detonating all over the site.
Don't you just LOVE getting negmodded for having a different opinion and stating it? Whoever doesn't agree with us sure showed us who the real power behind this argument is. /sarcasm
Already gotten flak for being mad and if you took the time to read what I've written in here, you'd see the reasoning behind me being very angry right now.
