I think part of your problem is playing him as a tank in that position. A support character isn't really a front line tanky kind of role. You don't get enough farm to get those big tanking items like Frozen Heart. I mean the tankiest item I get as a support main is Aegis of the Legion. If you want to play him as a tank I'd suggest learning how to jungle him. Otherwse you're just a CC bot. Playing him support is super situational.
well in that case, i've seen some do a AP rylais build on him or others do a hp stack into a atmas build on him emphasis on his AD, all about builds, though If you are looking for a tank Cho'gath is still top tier. But in the end i have never played him and if you want a tank, go Leona my favorite so far with her CC.
It's like that in every MOBA game TBH. I think the dota community is the worst, never play that game alone i dont even have fun if i do. I started playing LoL again (started playing at beta) since I never play dota2 without a party. Man, has anyone else noticed how much more viable Shen is as a solo top lane hero now? Also, for some reason I went up against an Amumu that dealt a large amount of damage to me, and basically saved their team. I have no idea how it even happened. He just built health items, yet frustration deal 200 something damage to me...A sad day for Shyvana :c
well with amumu his W does damage based on your health, so the easy counter is MR. But with shen he got serious buffs that makes hima threat now, but CC can handle him. For a good tanky champ, i say shyvana mundo and skarner for jungle, i have mixed feelings about maokai. A good top laner is rumble though, get some spell vamp and he is near impossible to push out of lane.
My favorite top lanes that can stay for days are Vlad (after a few levels, and if you use your pool correctly you should almost never die), Warwick (most boring champs to play against you should never harass him unless you have a gank coming), and finally Shen (same thing as Warwick, but he has a global so he can farm forever top until needed).Even high elo players ban Warwick and Shen because of how much sustain they have and their ults.
Warwick's ult pretty much forces you to buy QSS if you wish to counter it, and Shen's is hard to counter (easiest way is to kill them with shield on before he can tele in, but that is pretty difficult in most situations).
