I apologise if there has been a thread for this before, I did try looking for one and couldn't find it. They are both two of my favourite games, I love the story and gameplay in both and have put easily over 100+ hours into each of them. If I had to pick one game, I would have to say Fallout 3 because it got me into the games, the massive RPG games that you spend hours playing, with the awesome story, how much you can explore, the guns, the whole first time experiencing a post-apocalyptic world and just the whole game I think is amazing. What about your own opinions?

A lot of people dislike Fallout 3 as a successor to the franchise which is unfortunate. I was still finding little things to do in that game years after buying it which was awesome.I didn't like much of the armor though. Very bland and lacking in variety. It could have used more side quests to.....liven up the wastes.

Maybe more pointers to those unmarked events. New Vegas did a lot better with inventory and customization, Story was better and most of the DLCs really hooked you in. Lonesome Road's finale had everything you could've wanted from at its climax. Atmosphere...music....Ulysses standing before you as monolithic as the warhead which rises in front of him, and there hanging above it all. The Flag of the Old World.

Too lazy to animate his mouth though. Little things like that are the negatives for New Vegas. You can see where the work was put in but it makes the areas without that extra polish more stark. Such as Jacobstown which included an old favorite character of the series with voice actor and all. Then you finish the 2-3 quests in the area and you might as well forget it exists for all its good for.

I'm in the same boat, both of the game are two of my favorites. I love everything there is about wandering around the post-apocalyptic world and having to scavenge just to survive, I don't know what it is about it but I find that aspect of the game so appealing. For me though Fallout 3 would be the better of the two. Fallout 3 established the bar for the series and to be honest it might be one of my all-time favorite games ever. The game was huge offering hundreds of hours of gameplay between the quests and just exploring the map. The guns and gadgets were awesome, the characters are all great, and the story itself was really good.

Much respect to New Vegas as it also is an amazing game however it really didn't set the bar like Fallout 3 did. It had plenty of buggy issues which affected some more than others, and the story itself didn't seem as engaging as the one in Fallout 3. Either way though I own and love both of the games, and I've been meaning to go back to both and play through them again.

New Vegas for me. It's atmosphere and attitude felt much more like the first 2 games. It also brought back the dark humour I loved from F1 and F2 that I felt was lacking in F3. That being said, I still very much love F3.

I completely forgot to even bring DLC into the equation, such a big part of things! Even then though I would still have to say Fallout 3 had the better DLC, Point Lookout with the crazy drugs trip, Mothership Zeta with you being able to to shoot the Earth with a massive laser from space, Operation Anchorage with you entering the simulation and fighting off the Chinese Red Army, Broken Steel and seeing all of James's work in action and lastly The Pitt, with the fighting arena and running through as a slave and investigating the possible cure for mutation. I loved all of the Fallout 3 DLC, but when it comes to New Vegas the only DLC that I found entertaining was The Lonesome Road, the other 3 just didn't interest me in the slightest, I found the setting boring to explore and the stories (not saying they were bad) just didn't grab me or interest me much at all.

Hard to say which I liked more. I loved both. I got Fallout 3 a bit before Fallout New Vegas came out and I spent a lot of hours into Fallout 3 and all the DLC at the same time. By the end I was a little warn out by Fallout. Then shortly after came New Vegas. Sadly I still felt warn out from so much Fallout 3 that I just played the main story and the side missions related to achievements. I really didn't give the game the chance it deserved. Luckly after a few of the DLC for new Vegas was released I went back to complete those along with the rest of the normal achievements and this time I had a lot of fun playing it. Over all I think I'd say Fallout 3 is my favourite but New Vegas had a lot of features in it that I preferred I also liked the desert setting in New Vegas.

Also, I was always a little bothered that everything in Fallout 3 looked a little 'green.' Did anyone else find this, or is it just me?

I've played all of the Fallout 3 DLC but haven't yet played any of the New Vegas DLC. Although I'll say I enjoyed basically all of the Fallout 3 DLC and thought they were worth my money, they all brought something different and unique to the table.

Are you referring to the green that was basically in the Pip Boy screen? If so that's actually something I'm pretty sure you can change to other colors in the settings

I preferred Fallout 3. I thought the atmosphere was a little bit harsher, more post apocalyptic. The game also felt much harder, but that might be because I played it first, my friend who played New Vegas first said it was much harder.

Also, Fallout 3 felt bigger, especially the DC ruins. New Vegas felt too small for all the stuff that was supposed to be happening, I always thought it seemed a bit ridiculous given the sense of scale they were going for, especially in the final battle for the Dam. Also, the city of Vegas felt tiny. You barely explored any of the DC ruins, in terms of square footage, but they felt huge.

No I was referring to the game world itself. I don't know if it's just me, but the environment seemed to have a slight shade of green to it. And no it's not my TV, I've played it on other TVs and I still notice this. Maybe I just noticed it after playing New Vegas for awhile and that game is more 'yellow' (Cause of the desert and all)

I definitely agree with the size thing, to me it felt like New Vegas was big yes, but a lot of it was filled with, well, nothing. I understand it's meant to be in a desert and everything but there could of been a little bit more civilization, I meant The Strip and Freeside we're exactly huge and that was a big part of the whole game!

I think it would be hard to understand if people hadn't ever noticed it before, but I definitely seem to recall looking out of Tenpenny Tower and just seening a grey/green sky.In reply to JLHJosh, #9:

Yeah, I'm bad at explaining things too, so that probably doesn't help.

On a different note, one thing I didn't like about New Vegas was Ulysses's character. Unless I completely missed it, he was never referenced in the normal game and I think was made referenced in one of the DLCs. I think. It just felt like his character and the relationship with the courier was supposed to have been built up. But I feel like I completely missed this build up. If anyone knows that he was mentioned more then just once or twice, please let me know.

He was mentioned A LOT. Numerous holotapes, several characters talk about him in depth. Basically the story of The Courier and Ulysses was a narrative going on throughout all the DLC's. I'm terrible at summarizing it, so if you're up for some reading check out the Fallout Wiki page on him. The Background section sums his story up very well.

Thanks. I must have over looked a lot of those things or just somehow missed them.

Hmm idk its been a long time since I've played Fallout 3 (although I really wanna go back to it), maybe it was just something done by the developer's to give it more of a wastelandish type of feel?

Ulysses is only really mentioned in DLC though, usually in a way that should have had some connection to the main story. I kind of thought the last DLC ending was sort of weak because it didn't tie in with the main plot at all, and so you sort of knew it would be resolved in way that didn't really matter. Took away the whole epic feel, made it feel more like so overly long sidequest.

I felt like that was the point though. Throughout the main quest there's the looming mystery in the back of your mind about why Ulysses left the package for you to deliver and how it ties into The Couriers origin, and then the DLCs in the order they were released slowly revealed the truth. Personally I like how the DLCs stayed away from the main quest and just referenced it. But, to each their own.

NV feels alot more populated, and a lot more open, as Fallout 3 has a lot more dense citys. I would probably go NV over F3

I like Fallout games. I didn't play the first two games, but I will this summer.
But if I should choose between F3 and FNV I'd choose FNV. For me the best thing about this game is faction system. And also western atmosphere... like western in the future. The only negative thing is maybe a simple story, but you have a lot of endings which is cool. The only thing I miss is the city. New Vegas is quite small. I like Washington D.C. filled with supermutants, it was really fun fighting through the city. But I still prefer the FNV.

Personally I think that New Vegas is better. The faction system is a nice new idea, as well as the game have multiple different storylines to follow (Legion, NCR, etc), as well as generally having more people to interact with, and more quests to do. This one will probably keep you occupied for a bit longer. The only problem is the ending of the game, as you can not continue after you get to the end, which they corrected in Fallout 3's DLCs, though failed to in this one.

Fallout 3. To me that game was...dark. Storywise I would say new vegas but other then that I'll stick to fallout 3. I just like the setting better.

Well for me it depends, if you include the dlc in both i would pick fallout 3... but if it was just the game i would pick fallout new vegas.

I'll have to remain bipartisan on this topic, because there are things each game did so well. Fallout 3 had phenomenal story, good skill distribution, and a beautiful simplicity to its arrangement of items, not to mention the percentage chance of speech success. New Vegas had a helluva lot more very cool weapons and ammunition types, new enemies, and some great DLC that didn't fall flat like some of Fallout 3's did (I also liked the repair and crafting system in NV more). I enjoyed both games equally, not to mention that I 100%'ed the two
