The discussion about being in public and seeing things that might offend you kinda disturbed me. One of the guys said that he think that if you are in a public area you shouldn't see offensive things without some sort of warning. That goes directly against the first amendment of the US Constitution. In this country we have the right to freedom of speech not the right to not be offended. You guys have made your careers on freedom of speech by making videos and other media where you are allowed to say pretty much whatever you want.
"Will nerf stuff stick to your beard? Have you tried?" Joel is a wonderful person. That line has made me laugh at this podcast more than I have in the past 5 combined.
I'm guessing Jack doesn't read much. He doesn't seem to realize that Total Recall is based off a book. I remember hearing that the remake is supposed to be more true to the book.
I don't remember the name, I just know it's a Phillip K Dick novel.
I love the podcast, but i wish there was button to skip the car segments, because EVERY TIME its filled with misinformation, if not lies. I'll use this podcast as an example. "BMW used timing chains for a while, but they switched back to belts so that they can charge you more money, changing the belt"
SO much rage when i heard this. Firstly, timing chains never wear out? Are you kidding me? They have about the same life as a timing belt before you have to change them, and as for the from chains to belts to charge you more money, FAR from the truth, the reason they went back to belts is because BMW got serious about their engineering, and using a belt as opposed to a chain lowers the rotational bob weight by quite a few grams, allowing the engine to accelerate quicker and slightly raise the engines redline before harmonic issues, things like this are done all throughout their engines now, another example of something like this is hollow stainless steel valves. Through innovations like this, the BMW m6 has an engine that performs very closely to that of an F1 engine.
So incase anyone does check in here and to save messaging with hundreds of other people the same information I'll say this here. Youtube is messing up due to a cost saving idea being used. Previously you opened a video and youtube would load the entire thing.Due to faster internet speeds rather it means more people are requesting more data from youtube. To reduce the server loads and save bandwidth youtube no longer fully loads any video over about 7 minutes. When you click play youtube then begins to load another 7 minute ish and until you reach that 7 minute ish block it doesn't begin to load the next bit. This sounds all good in theory but if there's even a minute drop out in your internet during the time its meant to tell youtube "Hey this guy is still watching the video" then it doesn't load. Basically flash needs to be further upgraded on one side or the other to tell flash to send the request to load more of the video once connection is re-established. So yeh youtube is messed up due to even milisecond internet drops now. Blip used to have some similar issues but mostly now it loads the entire video and its only if your internet drops during the loading of the video initially that it can mess up.
I'd like to put my 2 cents (yeah that's right monetarily) in about the last comment that barbara and gus had about chicken frying stuff. Its not all the different from normal frying except that its a thick, crispy crust. Just like what would be on some deep south homestyle fried chicken. So when you have a chicken fried steak for instance, its referring to how it was cooked because of the thick fried crust.
I'm going to have a NERD MOMENT on top of that nerd moment. Joel asked if there is a Japanese equivalent to Power Rangers that was adapted from the US to Japan and made shittier. It's actually the other way around. Power Rangers was adapted from the original Japanese TV series, Super Sentai, which started in 1975 and still going strong today. The season that the first few seasons PR were adapted from was Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger which aired a year earlier in 1992. They just cut out the obviously Japanese footage and replaced it with US actors. I know a lot of people are aware of that. Just some info for those who dont. /NERDMOMENT
I get what your saying, but I think what joel was meaning was had they done what we did for power rangers. Had the Japanese taken one of our shows used the magic of editing and film some new footage with their actors to make it "theirs". that is what I took from that part of the conversation.
If it wasn't related to chicken fried chicken or Kate Upton then I didn't click on it in the link dump.
I'll be glad when RTX and all these other events are over though. The podcast crew gets divided up and anyone who's on the podcast is exhausted about planning or things coming up.

Super Sentai, along with the Kamen Rider series and Ultra series, are huge in Japan. Super Sentai is considered a part of the Tokusatsu culture, and it is primarily aimed towards children. However, it definitely can be enjoy at any age.
I recommend anybody who loves the original Power Rangers but is tired of the new rangers to check out Super Sentai. Particularly, you might like Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. It's a pirate-themed show that each character can transform into previous Super Sentai (most of which you will remember from Power Rangers).
Recently, Power Rangers SPD was dubbed for Japan, though SPD is based off their own Dekaranger. The original cast of Dekaranger dubbed the Power Rangers SPD. I don't understand why they did though.
There's this totally awesome known called "the internet".
Case in point AMIRITE?
J/K I see your point. Basically I was wondering if I was crazy or if this was common knowledge. Look I grew up on power rangers and kinda knew it was bs but didn't know all of the other stuff. Figured you guys knew something I didn't.
It's kind of like a much smaller, niche version of the anime fandom. In the beginning, a majority of people only knew of the anime dubbed here in the states, before and during Toonami's hayday. Then the internet blew up and everyone discovered how deep they could go in the anime rabbit hole. Same applies with Power Rangers and Super Sentai/Kamen Rider/Ultraman as a whole. It's a much smaller fandom but it works almost the same.

Yes ^
I began as Anime fan, but became a Toku-nerd last year. Their shows are like live-action Animes to me, and it's great.
Definitely. Bringing it back to RoosterTeeth and RvB, you can sort of draw parallels to it in a way. I like watching shows and movies with interesting stories, fun characters, great action and cool effects. Japanese Tokusatsu shows (Sentai/Kamen Rider/Ultraman, etc.) may be aimed at a bit of a younger audience than RvB, but I draw enjoyment from both for pretty similar reasons. Cool costumes, great action scenes and martial arts choreography, and sfx that enhance the scenes in an interesting way. RvB definitely has a deeper story than say Super Sentai, but Kamen Rider can get pretty deep when it wants to be.
Amen to Kamen Rider being deep. Even something fun like Kamen Rider OOO (my personal favorite Kamen Rider) got deep very fast.
Moral of these posts: Everybody, go watch Super Sentai and Kamen Rider!
This!
Try all of it, Ultraman, Metal Hero, Godzilla, Gamera. Even lesser known ones like GARO ( a personal favorite which is hella dark with a badass slayer of demons), Gransazer, Tomica Hero, etc. There is a wealth of entertainment to be had in Japanese Tokusatsu.
