Hey everyone! I just got back from RTX2012 and I am re-inspired to start filming. I've had the idea for a machinima in mind for a while, but at RTX I had a great idea and I've already written a rough draft for the first episode. The problem I'm having now is that I don't have a name for my group. In the past I've always come up with the group names, and I grow tired of them pretty quickly. So this time I'm going to let my favorite community throw out some ideas. Please nothing vulgar or too long. If your idea is picked I'd be glad to include you in an episode. Based on the first episode's script alone I'm going to need a lot of extra voices.
I was at RTX as well, and I too feel inspired. I'm going to continue working on a short film that my group has been planning.
As for names for you production group it really depends. I don't think I can give you any adequate ideas for your name. It really depends on you and your group.
Is there something funny, serious, or whatever that your group shares that you could name the production team after? Maybe an interesting combination of names, locations, ideas that represent the goals of your work?
I think the name of your group should represent what you are trying to accomplish or your attitude toward filmmaking/machinima. Its like a tattoo, after its out there you can't change it, and if it doesn't mean anything to you and you don't like it, then you will be not be satisfied and regret the decision.
Post some more information about your team, ideas, likes, and maybe we can help you come up with an appropriate name!
Yeah we've tossed a lot of things back and forth, but in the end everything is either too long or too stupid. We want it to just be something random. Rooster Teeth nailed it with something insane random but also has a funny double meaning. The old group I belonged to was Panda's Incorporated, but it was too long to do incorporated and most sites wouldn't accept inc. with the period. We just want something random and funny. I haven't thought to include something like locations which sounds really cool. But I'm going off to college soon so I guess I couldn't use my city. Right now we're just asking for suggestions.
Also! We're looking for a female voice actress to play one of the main characters. She'll likely have dialogue in every episode of the series. Right now we're planning on making 5-10 episodes and only 1 season. If interested just contact me here on the site and I'll send over some lines to try out.
who says you need a period at the end of Inc? It seems like I've seen it without before, and really, proper punctuation doesn't really seem necessary for a name. If you wanted to be a bit more random you could change it to Panda's Ink with a 'k' and then you'd still be 'Inc.' and you wouldn't have any punctuation issues :-)
It would only matter if you are actually trying to incorporate the group as a business. I have a business and in Texas they are very specific on how you label your company. I have an LLC and you have to specify that you are an LLC by putting LLC, Ltd.,limited liability company, or limited company in the title.
However, I doubt that he is incorporating, at least at this time, so that could definitely work for his name.
Huh I've never thought about that before. But that was my old group and I've moved since then. I'm really not the most creative person when it comes to names. Also I'm moving again next month, so the machinima I'm starting will likely be the last work I do with these friends for a while. However, I'd like to keep whatever name I choose.
Yeah, that would make sense, but I got the idea that the websites in question were like youtube, vimeo, twitter, or Facebook... not necessarily places that require your official incorporated name
I was just making the information known. You don't have to use the incorporation titles in the domain name, youtube name, etc.. You would have to put it in your credits or in the footer of your site. As long as it is accessible to your audience to find out that you are an LLC or inc. you are gold.
Makes sense. And I was definitely impressed by the quality of the random generated phrases... I might need to come up with a project just to justify using one of the names
I dunno man, it depends if you wanna be all hardcore and serious, or if you want it to be goofey and internet-ish. If I was you, I would find something quirky in the halo universe, and base the name on that. I dunno, just throwing Idea's around.
But let me know if you ever need some help! I'd be glad to give ya a hand.
You have two choices really. You can go the obvious route and choose something obvious and boring and self-explanatory like Nerdist, Rooster Teeth, Geek and Sundry, etc. You know exactly what those are all referencing (Rooster Teeth being the least obvious of the bunch). Following the advice from the Blip panel (which I WOULD have gone to if I'd known panels stopped having 2 hour long lines midday on Saturday...grrrr...), pick something that sticks in people's heads but don't lie to them either. Lesbian Cops is a web series about cops who are lesbians. Simple, but it sticks in your head and will pop up on searches for things other than comedy web series that don't have nudity.
The other route is far more interesting. Pick the hands down most random thing you can. Draw scrabble tiles at random and then use each as the first letter as you randomly flip through the encyclopedia and put your finger on a random word from that volume while blindfolded. So you end up with something like "Pasta Trousers" or "Highlight Legionnaires". When you become popular, the first thing question at any Q&A or the first comment posted is going to be where you got the name. You can either be evasive and say it's a secret and drag that out for years or you can make up a different story every time, each more absurd than the last.
Yes, it will start on Halo Reach. I've decided to worry less about the name for now and focus more on finding quality voice actresses. Finding actors was easy, but it's hard to find a girl who's both interested in machinima and has the voice of the characters we're looking for. However, there's a name that we are tossing around which works great because it's obviously fan-based and makes a great acronym. I'll post it later once we make a decision.
I would find inspiration in anything around you for it! I had to write something for a script and for the life of me couldn't think of a name. I took a drink of a Sierra Mist and it came to me. I used the name Sierra for a female name and now that's one of my favorite characters. To the point you should keep an open mind. BTW I loved the idea of Panda Ink. Another idea. Use animals (not a rooster obviously) or a place like you said earlier. Miami Lemurs? Chicago Marmots? Toronto Lions? I dunno. I'm not very inspirational.
Haha thanks, but we've actually got a name in the works now. We're making an intro video to our new machinima series and we'll show the name first there. I'll link it to this thread once it's up! Right now we're really just looking for more voice actresses.
