I was just curious as to if there are any other people out there that are into the martial arts or have any experience with it. Experience could even be watching a jackie chan movie. I have studied American Kenpo for six years, and got my black belt last May. I wont lie, I got into the martial arts because of all those cool movies I watched when I was a kid, but of course I ended up getting a lot more out of it than that. Anyone else?
Actually Ben, it looks like the one I started got deleted. Guess that says a lot about the Martial Arts community here. But ya there’s a few of us. I'm rounding out my first year of Aikikai Aikido with about 5 years of Aioyo-Do Karate under my belt.
Oh hey Ben, don't forget Shaolin Ninjitsu. We got a couple guys around here who have masterd that too.
Yeah, I do way to many types at a time!! I mean right now I am doing: Drunken Boxing, Shinobi-Kai, Shotokan, Shadow Hand, Taijutsu, and Koga Ryu (a rare ninjutsu)
that stuff always facinated me. I never got too into it though. I've just studied a lot of the modern self defense styles. Such as Kenpo, Muy Thai, and I did a little Kung Fu a little while back.
I bet it didnt get deleted, I think when a thread isnt posted in for X days (like 2 months or something) it gets achived, so that we dont end up with 40 pages of old threads.
Since this is the new martial arts thread ... I've been doing Taekwondo for about eight months now (I'm pretty new to martial arts - I just got my green belt this past weekend) and really enjoying it. I never thought I'd enjoy the idea of kicking someone's ass so much! Although if I was going to pick up a second one, it would probably be Kung Fu (or something similar) because it seems so graceful and relaxed (I'm a girl, so don't call me a loser for wanting to try something less agressive than Taekwondo).
That's cool. The reason I have so many is that I am training for a huge goal: to become the 35th grandmaster of the Togakure Ryu!!!!!!!!!!
Ya ya, It's a big goal... But still, It's what I strive on! I can't help it, I'm a freakin' monkey when it comes to fighting. and It kind of sucks to be called the "Monkey Ninja".
Like I said a post or two ago, I went to a tournament at the Tulsa Judo Club, it was a pretty good sized tournament with a couple of other college teams there and a bunch of really good clubs, I ended up getting third in my weight division.
my first match (I'm the person on the right, wearing the blue belt over my yellow belt)
Me about to win my first match with an o soto maki komi
the 2nd-third place match (I'm just in they yellow belt this time)
me about to get the shit tripped out of me to lose that match and get third place
Awesome... Just took a semester of Kenpo Karate here at school...awesome stuff. I'm really thinking about it, as it helped me lose some weight and I found it very interesting.
I used to fight in mixed martial arts tournaments. I was more of a submission fighter. I studied a lot of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, sambo, and some Muay Thai. I quit with a 30 - 8 - 2 record. I quit mostly because I had had a few concussions within a two week span. I was lucky, I escaped without the cauliflower ear. Although I did recently have to undergo surgery to repair my nose because it was so utterly destoyed that I couldn't breathe through it at all. I still love watching Pride and UFC matches.
My personal favorite hold was the guillotine choke. I got pretty good at cathing people trying to shoot, slapping on that choke, and leaning back as far as I could. I also choked one guy out with his own gui. I passed his guard, put one arm behind his neck, grabbed the opposite gui lapel, stuffed it in the hand behind his neck , locked my feet behind his knees so he wouldn't be able to scoot out of it, and slowly tightened it until he tapped. It was truly awesome. Not so awesome was the time I was knocked out less than a minute in to the first round, quite embarrassing, especially after I realized what had happened.
In reply to Cuthbert, #28: Ive done some grappling and submission stuff before with some crazy guys. That is some intense and physical stuff. I would hate to end up in a ground match against someone with a strong background in grappling.
It's actually pretty fun. It's kind of like a chess match. You have to think a few moves ahead of your opponent and God help you if you make the wrong move. You could end up tapping very quickly. My problem was stand-up technique. I studied Muay Thai, but was never very good. I am too slow and drop my hands constantly, which was the cause of more than one of my losses. I had to go to the ground if I wanted to win and being limited like that will kill you because guys try to make you stay up. When I went to the ground, that's when my patience, strength, stamina, and flexibility would come into play. God, I miss it.
