Dark Hunters Chapter III
The Nijitt tore towards the small, leafy planet ahead and entered the atmosphere of Carnbithat VIII, white fluffy clouds dissipating as they burst through them. Besek slowed down and headed for a large clearing in the jungle where a small beacon was lit, winking at him through the canopy of leaves below.
They touched down with a small bump and they burst out the back of the Nijitt gasping deeply, filling their lungs with the fresh, jungle oxygen they so sorely missed on Virtua II. Above them in the trees, snipers took careful aim as a welcoming party came forth from the bush into the glade. "Besek, good to see you well but what are you doing back so soon?" asked the foremost member of the group stepping forward. Besek shook the man's hand roughly and glanced upwards momentarily before explaining. "Virtua II's lost and we need to speak to David ASAP" He said briskly. Up in the branches the snipers lowered their guns and watched the group converse. "We know of the tragedy on Virtua as we've had survivors showing up for the past few hours. I believe David is awaiting your arrival so he can be briefed on what's happened" the man told Besek. Ben and Scott clipped their guns to their belt and stood aside Besek while James locked up the Nijitt. "Best not keep him waiting" Besek said shortly, striding past the welcomers and into the jungle, James, Scott, Ben and the others tailing behind.
Apart from the odd idle chit-chat here and there, not much was said as they approached the DH-HQ structure, which comprised of three ancient ruin sites converted into above and underground military bases. Crumbling stone architecture was merely cosmetic and most columns housed mechanical equipment, humming away to itself quietly. Small trees grew through the cracked cobblestone pave ways and the decrepit, old, decaying buildings lay scattered around the site, mostly entrances to the different facilities. The sky was a beautiful cerulean blue with nimbus clouds wafting about as the birds soared below them, a welcome change from the stroppy weather of Virtua II.
While the outside had a crumbling stone appearance, the interior was carpeted with the same blue carpet as Virtua II and elaborate wall designs were depicted on the wall. Sun streamed in through the windows and DH personnel scurried about on their daily business enjoying the weather. Besek waltzed up to a magnificent pair of double oak doors and knocked loudly, the sound echoing through the room beyond. There was a pause, then the doors swung open and a disgruntled man stood there, his shoulder length hair messy and had a pained expression on his face. "Afternoon David" Besek said, pushing past him into the glamorous office. David just grunted a reply and gestured for everyone else to join them inside. James admired the cases of glittering awards David had accumulated over his years of being a DH, while Besek sat in a comfy, padded chair, arms crossed. David flopped back into his leather swivel chair and spun around a few times before facing Besek. "What's the story?" he asked bluntly. Besek took a deep breath and recounted their recent encounter to him. "Firstly, a sand storm hit so we were unable to see the Veegon Assault force coming from above. Then while we were fighting them they planted a bomb- "Who? The Veegons?" David cut in. "Yes, they planted a bomb in the base and we had no choice but to abandon the base. Although, we had no idea about the bomb until it exploded and destroyed the whole planet as we were flying away" Besek finished. David sat back with an odd expression on his face. "I want a full report on my desk by the morning Besek. Good to see you and your team still alive" Besek nodded and saluted his commanding officer, then left with the rest of the Hell-Flames. David swivelled around in his chair and gazed out the wall-sized window, the first evening rays shimmering through onto his face, grinning to himself.
The Hell-Flames parted company with the group they met at the Nijitt and went to the living quarters. "What do you think the Veegons are up to?" Scott asked nobody in particular. James shrugged. "Maybe they decided to kill us all with one blow instead of strategy this time? They really want this war over. In their favour..." "Like that's going to happen. Mark my words, we will win this war" Ben said confidently. "I'm holding you to that then" Besek laughed. They reached a small door with a key card lock which Besek unlocked, and they went inside to find 5 comfy beds, a fridge, bathroom, desk, TV, radio and a small kitchen area. "Wow... Now this is my kinda living quarters!" Scott said jumping on one of the beds. They stretched out, disarmed themselves and lay down on a bed, weary from the past few days. "I'm beat, I could use a good night's sleep" Besek said. "Too bad you have to write that report for David" Ben laughed. Besek groaned and dragged himself to a table and began writing. "Texas Hold 'em anyone?" James said brightly, pulling out his deck of playing cards.
The shrill buzz of the alarm clock next to Besek's head woke him from his sleep. He sleepily lifted his head and gazed around blearily. The living quarters were empty and Besek figured his friends went to breakfast. He yawned, stood up and looked down at his report. "That'll do" he mumbled as he re-read it. He staggered out of the room and into the corridor where the bright sunlight pouring into the hall blinded him temporarily. Shielding his eyes from the light, he made his way back to the familiar double doors of David's office. Besek was too tired to bother knocking so he opened the door and was about to step in when he heard David on the phone and stopped. "Yes, 'Operation: Aqua', is going ahead perfectly" Besek heard him say. "No, no, he doesn't know. Yes, I'll make sure they're there... Goodbye, Admiral"
