Stem Cell Legislation Thoughts
I may be a few months late on this, but figure it's worth a short journal entry.

As everyone (in America) knows, under the Bush administration, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act was vetoed. The bill would have reversed a previous law that prohibited the federal support of stem cell research using stem cells from destroyed fetuses.

As of March of this year, president Obama released an executive order reversing the 2006 decision.

Now, this isn't a political rant, so I'm not going to speak of any other issues or spout "Bush bad Obama good lolol," but I was very happy with the March decision. Here's why.

The veto of the SCRE Act was done under the pretext that abortion was wrong. However, it really doesn't do anything to curtail abortion. Instead of the fetus at least being something that could potentially save lives and improve the lives of many, it went straight to the medical waste basket.

Now, I like to consider myself both pro-choice and pro-life (I would rather pregnancies be carried to term, but I'm not so self-important as to condemn those who choose to receive abortions, or indeed, those who genuinely need them), but even if you're against them, that doesn't mean you should shut down funding to research that could revolutionize medical technology.

Of course there are some very promising alternatives, but burning bridges tends to be a bad idea.
