Teenage Mental Development "Both genes and environment play major roles in shaping early brain development..." (Teenage Brain). Although physical development of the brain takes place at a very young age, the psychological development of the brain continues on into the teenage years. While the physical development of the brain is greatly affected by genes, the psychological development of the brain is mostly affected by environment. Because the teenage years are a time in life where children begin to be socially active; the psychological development of the brain is greatly affected by the teenagerâ€s peers. However, their parents are not completely without influence when it comes to their children's psychological development. In all, the development of the brain is affected by many variables. “Children who have had a strong bond with their parents at a very young age tend to be more trusting of their parents. They are more prepared for a healthy emotional separation in their teen years. Which reduces the tendency towards rebellion (Archer). Most sources on the subject of teenage development claim that parents are important. "Most important is an adolescent's need for parents who are both nurturing and demanding†(World Book). In other words, adolescents need parents who will be there to love them and care for them. But of course adolescents also need parents that are not afraid to discipline them. If the parents are extreme in the former, with none of the later, then the adolescent will become unruly. Adolescents, and typically anyone who gets everything they want, become bratty. However, if the parents are extreme disciplinarians then the adolescent might become socially inept. Adolescents subjected to this tend to be low achievers. "The startling reality is that parents have become [psychologically] extruded from the inner lives of their children" (Windell). As was said, parents are very important to the psychological development of their children. But in addition Windell states that the parents do not seem to be part of the lives of their children. The result is that more of the shaping of their children is left to the children themselves or their peers. Another sad truth is that the times when the parents and their children are together tend to be an uncomfortable experience. Arguing and yelling at each other, the relationship between teens and their parents is deteriorating. In Windellâ€s book he gave the example of a girl yelling at her mom. She was yelling at her mom because she "only wants her mother to cave in [to her demands.]..."(Windell). "She doesn’t care about her mother's rights; Alisha wants what she wants." (Windell). Teenagers do not seem to understand the kind of grief and pressure that they are putting on their parents by doing this. "If Alisha were being pressured... she would feel the unfairness"(Windell). If teenagers could understand their parents better, then they may not make such rash actions. The other family ties that most teens have are siblings. Problems in between siblings can arise if one of the children is perceived as more favored than the others. (Archer) Again, this also has to do with the parents. Family dynamics are complex so they will not be discussed in this paper, but the important thing is that the parents express love equally for their children. Otherwise fights and alienation will develop between the children. Also if one feels disfavored it could lead to strife between that child and his parents. This may also lead to a rebellious separation of the child from his parents instead of a healthy separation. Ron Taffel talked about how kids have been hanging-out unsupervised for decades now. This is true, for probably even longer than that. The fact is that "there is a sharp increase in the amount of time adolescents spend with their peers compared to the time they spend with adults or their families.†(World Book). This is where other adolescents play into the picture. Because as the adolescents are spending more time with their peers they are starting to learn more from their peers than their parents. For the most part being with friends is a good thing. "Teens can readily learn new social skills and put them to practical use"(Teenage Brain). That is not something that is as easily learned from family. In adolescence, many of the social skills that people will use the rest of their lives are learned and put in to use. That is why being with friends is important. Teenagers can also find acceptance in their group of friends. This traces back to their family. If the teenager is not getting acceptance at home, he will be determined to find it somewhere else. Everyone wants acceptance, so if the teens can find it with their friends they will. This will build strong relationships between a teen and their friends, but lose much of their relationship with their parents or siblings. Because teenagers spend so much time with their peers they start developing similar values. If one teenager finds something cool and his friend do not, he will eventually be molded by their opinions. Also if the teenagers choose friends who are not the best people it will corrupt him. This corruption could be stopped by their parents. However, if they are spending more time with their peers than their parents it is not likely to be stopped. So if one lacks morals he may eventually cause others around him to lack morals, too. i will post more in the comments area:
