I just got a call from a guy on an overseas number saying he was from Microsoft Windows Tech support telling me that every time I log onto the computer my computer is downloading files harmful to my computer and that he can help me get rid of them. I just got a call from a guy on an overseas number saying he was from Microsoft Windows Tech support telling me that every time I log onto the computer my computer is downloading files harmful to my computer and that he can help me get rid of them. So I asked to speak to a superior and for him to verify for sure who he was and he hsaid, He only knew my last name and Dad's first initial and nothing else about me.
He also said to check on to following things on any computer in my household which used my internet connection (which makes absolutely no sense if you know anything about how error reports work, they're specific to the device)
He asked me to open RUN (windows key + R) and then type in "prefetch" and look at the files. He said I don't need more than half of these files.
He then asked me to go back to RUN and type in "inf junks" into run. And to tell him if there was more or less files in this folder than the prefetch one.
Of course at the same time I was googling everything he was saying and looking for people talking about scams and whatnot. I then said to him that I'm reading a lot online about scammers asking me to do exactly the same thing that he was asking me to do and that I wasn't going to do anything that he asked until he proved who he was. He just hung up the phone.
SCAMMER PWNED!
apparently (according to google) they'll end up saying that you have some kind of virus on your computer and if you pay them $15 or so that they can remove it for you.
Don't EVER give anyone financial details over the phone unless YOU called THEM and you know exactly who you are talking to. Microsoft will NEVER call you to fix something like this, this would be a large scale problem and calling people individually is an absolutely ridiculous solution for it.
GOOGLE EVERYTHING and try to see if other people have had the same call.
and lastly ALWAYS be skeptical of the "overseas/priva
te" generic telemarketer caller ID
