Permanent Dumbass? I'd rather been known as that than a fan of Chinatown any day of the century. It has some decent aspects to it, but it's waaaaaaaaaay overrated and the length of shots/scene are ridiculous. It's like watching slugs fuck. If something were actually happening in some of those scenes, or if it were interesting, it would be fine. Polanski has made way better films than this one (The Apartment).
And Robert Towne? Three words: Ask the Dust.
