I Love ThisEvery time it gets brought up, I think it's an incredible insight. Gabe Newell used to work at Microsoft, at one point there was a study on what software was installed on computers, what people were doing with their computers. I'll let his words speak for himself:
"Windows was being used on 30 million PCs in the United States, and this was cause for enormous celebration. Thank God they're actually using it rather than just getting it shoved onto their Dell or Compaq machine and just immediately uninstalling it and going back to character-mode DOS. But the thing that was really striking to me at the time was that Windows was the number two product..."
Doom was #1.
"...so somehow the largest software company in the world was being out-distributed by a twelve-person company in Mesquite, Texas."
That, and loads more are here in this awesome one-hour speech by Gabe on things regarding productivity, economics, and more.
My Sisters Does Crafts StuffLike...I've said it before. She does really cool stuff. That firefly picture I have?
She put it all together, bought the pieces separately. If you're someone like me, you spend too much time being productive on the interbutts and SITTING ON YOUR BUTT, to take the time to get a poster and put stuff in said poster to hang it on your wall.
You're not just limited to the 12 items currently in the shop though. You can send her a message, request her for something (LIKE MY AWESOME FIREFLY POSTER MB*) and she'll see what she can do about it.
* Don't ask for the firefly poster. It's MINE, and mine alone. And don't ask her for deviled eggs either.
I'm always looking to the others to see what they think will work in a game. A game is not a novel, after all. I could come up with the coolest plot twist in the world, but if it doesn't add to immersive gameplay, then it doesn't belong in the game any more than jumping puzzles belong in a book.
- Marc Laidlaw
An interview conducted in 1997 with Marc Laidlaw, the writer for Valve on nearly all of their projects, has been released.
Kinda interesting how the thinking used here has now become common places in video games.
Yet a year away from that interview, Half-Life broke new ground, raised the bar, etc. etc.
My Dad Was in my Room...(and other stuff)Dad was in my room while I was at work. He put up some plastic and heat-sealed it to my windows. Our windows are really bad at keeping the cold out, trapping heat in, etc. So he did that. Above my window there's lots of trinkets and things I just put up there because I don't have other places to put them currently.
See?
In having to heat the plastic to the window, my dad moved all the stuff up there all over my desk below. When I put everything back to about where I wanted it...something felt off. My monitors felt further away than usual. Something was just...not right. But I checked, everything's about right. Ever felt like that before? Something's off in your room and you don't know what? So odd.
Anyways, a week or two ago I met up with this guy...sorry if you gotta turn your head or look away:
Yes ladies, the rumors are true. He eats tears. Weird as fuck...If you can't place the open jaws that are about to devour your happiness, this is @MoltenSlowa . I share states with this guy.
I have a cable hookup on my desk so I can easily switch between my AKG 240 Studio Headphones and speakers. I run them all through a dedicated sound card for extra oomph in games and music and what have you. An extension 3.5mm cable runs from my soundcard to my desk, where I have the ends of my AKG headphones and Altec Lansing speakers for easy swap-out laying
AKG headphones get dangerously loud once you pass the 30-threshold on Windows 7 and all your apps have to be turned down too.
With my speakers, however, I need to more maximize the volume and put Windows 7 to 50.
I got home after a drive, ready to listen to a song. I pulled up iTunes, and swapped out the speakers for the headphones since it is night now. I clicked play on this song.
I looked to the corner of my screen and saw my volume icon at near max.
I HIT FUNCTION_F1 ON MY KEYBOARD FOR QUICK-MUTE SO FAST I PUNCHED A HOLE IN TIME.
