when i moved into my current apartment [three years ago], the roommate at the time and i had a Superhero Housewarming party.. where people could show up as an established superhero or create their own..
I was Rogue from the X-Men Evolution era [also where my hair started to turn to the vibrant side].... a random co-worker of my roommate's showed up as Captain Gay.. she just wore fucking hot pants, a wifebeater, a big gay flag as a cape, and threw skittles at people saying "TASTE MY RAINBOW".... it was absurd.. and hilarious.. and we quickly became BFFs
I was 16, and sitting at a table in the cafeteria at school, playing Magic the Gathering. All of a sudden there was a shadow over the table. I looked up and saw the biggest, scariest motherfucker I've ever seen in my life. Leather jacket, enormous beard, long hair... I thought he was gonna kick my ass. Then he said, "Hey, you guys play Magic too?"
My best friend was visiting his Aunt (who was my neighbor) back in 1998 when we met. There weren't many kids on my block that were my age at the time, so when I saw him outside by himself I walked over and said "Do you wanna be friends?" And we've been best buds since.
A church hired me as their music director after their current one accepted a media internship in Des Moines, and my friend had already been working under that guy for a couple of months before I got there, serving as a background vocalist. We worked together very closely and stretched each other musically and saw a lot of people come and go. Four years later we're co-leaders for the music department, working under a two-time Grammy-nominated gospel artist who's currently out of town promoting her (supposedly) last album release.
I'm coming up on 50 years old. I've had a few people I considered best friends over the years, and while I still keep in touch with a couple, we aren't all that close anymore.
Also I now live with my best friend. We met on the internet. Sorry, but it's true.
My oldest friend, who was my closest and best friend for most of my life, I met in Grade Two. We had the same teacher, if I recall correctly.. We had mutal friends in Grade One, and met in passing, but it wasn't until Grades Two and Three that we started actually hanging out. He became my best friend namely I think because he was just so accepting and patient; he never left me out or whatever because I was slow on the playground, etc.
And Maeghan is my best friend now, just because we clicked.... We met, like, Grade 9 I guess. We were both very quiet, and never hung out, but we shared a few classes. We started talking in Grade Twelve Philosophy class, but again both of us were shy. We kept in contact after highschool, talking over IM being much easier than face-to-face, and eventually that grew into mutual liking-of-each-other. After a couple of dates, we agreed that we would consider ourselves a "couple", and took it really slowly. We just clicked and became really great friends.
My best friend Amanda and I discovered one another my sophmore year of highschool. She was a grade younger than me and started hanging around some of my mutual friends. I didn't like her at first. I wouldn't even give her the time of day. Come to find out, she didn't like me either. I was okay with that. One day, we (Amanda, me and our mutual friends) were supposed to go out together...well guess who were the only ones that showed up? So I'm sitting there looking at her thinking "Fuck, here I am stuck with this broad that I don't even like. Might as well make small talk till I can get the hell out of here." I made small talk, and Amanda seemed to respond well....then we noticed we had a lot in common. Her middle name is Lynne, mine is Leigh. We both have birthdays in May. We are both left handed. We love the same music. I kept thinking, "Did I just meet my twin?" The whole time. We talked for over two hours, and I didn't want to leave when it was time to go. We decided we both had fun and wanted to hang out again.
Pretty much from that point foward, we were inseparable. We were always together, so much so that we lost our individual names most of the time. We were The Amandas or Amanda Squared. Hell, for a while we had the same har color just to confuse people.
I really miss her. I hope I get to see her when I go back to GA for Christmas.
Best male friend I met in Junior High. Have no idea when, since I try to suppress the memories of Junior High. We lost track of each other after junior high, but kind of knew about each other all through high school. He went away for a long time after high school, but came back a couple years ago. We reconnected about a year ago, and have been bros ever since. We're now going to be sharing a house with 2 mutual friends in a couple weeks.
Best female friend I met in 4th grade. Arielle was this dark, emotional, goth-before-goth-was-cool girl, with boobs in 4th grade. We dated for about 6 months in Junior High, but have been best friends since 5th or 6th grade. She now resides in Austin, but we still talk at least twice a week, and any chance that I get to be even near Texas I take to see her.
One of my very best friends was someone I only really got to know well after knowing him for a couple of years in high school. One day in grade 10 he told me his holocaust-survivor aunt had died and he had several hours of video footage of conversations between them. He asked me to make a documentary about her. 7 years ago.
First one was third grade we sat across from each other in class. We were both the only tomboys in our grade. Second one we had the same Philosophy and Music classes 10th grade (we dated, thought it was for the best to not anymore). Third one was working at Tower Records, we started the same day.

but we met at a dog show, and we each brought 120 pound akitas for protection, in case the other was a psycho

But I don't really have a best friend.
