DVD MarathonI couple of months ago I got the remastered box set of seasons one thru five and the recollection set. Last week, I decided to have a marathon of every season. It had been so long since I saw the first five seasons, it was like watching them all again for the first time. Everything seemed just as funny and entertaining as I remembered. Nothing felt dated to me.
Then I got to Reconstruction. When I first saw it, I kind of didn't like the more serious tone of it. It didn't feel like the same series I'd been watching for years. Now that I'm watching it again, I really like it. Maybe it's because I'm coming from a new perspective now, or I can finally appreciate that when you're telling a broader story, the tone of the narrative has to change to accomplish that, though still allowing for the humor. Whatever the case, by the time I finished Recreation, I had a few 'Holy Shit!' moments, especially when you find out Church is the AI derived from the personality of The Director. I was completely enthralled with the Freelancer Program and couldn't wait to find out everything about it.
Revelation seemed like the perfect culmination of every season. It's like all these threads from the very beginning and recently introduced ones were sewn together into this wonderful patch-work. It's like one of those visual illusions, where when you look at it you see this one picture, this series of foul mouthed guys yelling at each other and being really silly, and when someone points out the other picture, you can't help but see that one from now on, this more complex story about a covert program and reason behind "why these guys are here". The ending was one of the bests finales of anything. If it really was the final seasons, we got to see a lot of loose ends brought to a satisfying conclusion; and if it wasn't the last seasons, we're left with so many more possibilities for the future.
Revelation has also been a perfect season for important, meaningful speeches. I loved Sarge's speech, because it showed that as much as you think he doesn't like these people, he really knows them. It's like if he would stop trying to be this textbook leader and did some thinking outside of these strict guidelines, he could be a great leader, but being Red vs Blue, it's only a glimpse of greatness. Epsilon-Church's speech at the very end tears me up every damn time. I had recently broken up with my boyfriend, and he touched on everything I was feeling. I wanted my relationship to work out so much that I pushed it away. I think we've all done the same thing at some point in our lives, and he was telling us that that's a pretty much universal experience, but if we can recognize we've done it or are doing it, and take the time to change it, it can work out for us if we put the effort in. At least that's what I got from it.
I love this series so fucking much and I can't wait for more seasons. Well done guys!
