Unseen - part 50Part 1
Chapter 13 Rachel yawned, but her eyes were still wide open. Catherine's scream had woken her from a dead sleep, and now she couldn't get her brain to stop working long enough to get back to sleep, though she desperately wanted to.
She adjusted herself against Eric, holding onto him for the sake of her own mental health; if he wasn't there for her, she didn't know what state of mind she would be in. When Catherine had woken everyone up, Rachel was literally shaking from the shock, and Eric had stayed with her and held her and made her feel like it was all right. He was asleep now, but she just couldn't get there.
"Carl, are you awake?"
"Yes." He sounded really alert, though he was keeping his voice down so he wouldn't wake anyone else.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm waiting."
That's a strange answer. "What are you waiting for?"
"To make sure nobody else does what Catherine did, and tries to run up the stairs. If they do try, I'll stop them."
I guess that makes sense. "Won't you fall asleep?"
"Not until someone else is up."
Rachel had her doubts about whether Carl could actually stay awake - it would probably mean making it almost 36 hours awake in a row (minus the couple hours he probably got before Catherine started screaming her head off) - but decided better than to question whether he could do it. She hadn't spent that much time around him, but somehow she got the feeling that he was not to be fucked with.
"What happened with that guy in the alley?"
Carl hesitated, and then said "I don't want to talk about it."
That's not going to work two times in a row. "Come on, who else are you going to tell?" She didn't know what that could mean in this case, but she'd heard it in movies an awful lot and those people always seemed to get their way. Rachel did not.
"Really, I don't want to talk about it."
"Come on, I'm having trouble getting to sleep. It'll help you stay awake and it'll help me sleep."
"No, I don't think it will," said Carl. "I don't think this story will help you sleep at all."
Rachel pouted a little, but still she wasn't tired. "Will you tell me later?"
"I'll tell everyone later," Carl said. "They all need to know this. But I'll wait until everyone wakes up; telling the same thing five times would get exhausting."
"Do you know what time it is?" She wasn't sure if she actually cared, she was mostly just making conversation, trying to occupy her mind so she could go to sleep.
"It's some time in the morning, but that's all I know and even that is speculation. Nobody knows how long we were asleep for before, so there's no way to tell."
"I hope it's later than that; I don't like being down here." The bunker was easily better than the file cabinet for a number of reasons, not the least of which was that Eric was there to protect her now. But better doesn't mean good, and the darkness in the bomb shelter definitely had her on edge. She closed her eyes and tried to focus on Eric's breathing. "So tell me about yourself," she offered.
She heard Carl snicker under his breath. "Tell you about myself?"
"Yes, till me about yourself. How long have you been an electrician?"
Carl waited a moment, then said "since I left the Army."
"You said something about that before."
"I left in 2004 after serving for two years. They didn't have any use for me, so I went into business as an electrician."
Yep, nice and dull. "How do you like it?"
"It's good enough, but it's not what it was. I miss serving."
Rachel yawned and found her eyes closed, almost glued there. Finally. "I think I can sleep now. Thanks."
Carl seemed to adjust himself, and then spoke confidently "You're welcome." He might have said something after that, but Rachel couldn't tell. It didn't take long for her to be fast asleep again, clutching onto Eric.
