Stomp The YardThis afternoon I spent my day spraying weed killer in the cracks of the patio and the driveway. If you're on my friend list, you knew this already from a couple FO journals. What you didn't know is that there was a lot more to it than just spraying the stuff. Let me explain:

The stuff we got is called Path Clear, and it's great at killing plants. Not only does it kill the plant, it actually kills the soil, so that nothing else can grow there. So that crack in your driveway should never have another plant coming up through it, because the soil is dead. Not so great is that this means I can't use it anywhere there's actual soil visible. Which means clearing out the weeds doesn't just mean spraying the weed killer like a boss, it means pulling a bunch of weeds, too.

I was supposed to do this last week, but given that I was going to have to be out there for rather a long time, I decided to wait until the heat wave broke. Don't get me wrong - I have nothing against working in hot weather and building up a sweat - but again, there's more to it than that. I'm allergic to ragweed, and a non-trivial amount of what there was to pull was ragweed. That meant in order to prevent a skin reaction, I had to cover myself head to toe in denim, and thick work gloves (for the pricklies), and then go out in the heat.

On the plus side, being totally covered like that means I don't have to worry about sunblock. However, by the same token, it also means I'll be sweating a lot more than if I were out in shorts and a t-shirt like most sane people would be. I also, knowing how long I was going to be bent over pulling on things, decided not to work out yesterday so that I wouldn't have any sore muscles going into today. Yes, it's a lot to take into account for pulling weeds, but I like to think things through thoroughly (tee-hee, alliteration) before I do them.

Yesterday we finally got a decent rainstorm, though it only lasted about 15 minutes, and the heatwave broke, so I chose today to go out and do my thing. I was outside working for 3 hours, with a break for calories in there somewhere, for a total time spent of about 3 1/2 hours. The last part was easy, I just carpet bombed the relevant areas with poison; that took about 15 minutes. By the time I was done, my back was sore, my shirt was completely stuck to me, and holy crap was I tired. But I earned my shower, the place looks a lot better, and I get to check off another item from my to-do list.

Speaking of things to do (segway!), if you're a writer at all, there's a writing contest going on in this group over here to write up a First Contact scenario in 3000 words or less. The entry deadline is this Friday, so there's still plenty of time. Up up and away!

...great use of visual imagery. I can just imagine the little poison bombers demolishing those nasty weeds.

Also, we used boiling water on our weeds. It seemed to work much better than a lot of other stuff we've used.

Also, also, segue.

Glad you were able to check something off your 'to-do' list, nice feeling.

Segue...I do have a segway, though.
