Oh yeah, Avid's multi-user environment is absolutely LIGHTYEARS ahead of any other editor's. In college we used Avid with a Unity environment, and routinely had six or more editors working within the same project, using the same source footage. If you need an environment like that, then Avid is definitely the way to go. It'll be a pricey install - but I can tell you that you'll love it.

Yeah it's pretty crazy how far ahead the multi-user environment is. Our show couldn't run without for how fast we work with the amount of Editors that are working at any one time. Unity is still their foundation for servers but they are trying to revive ISIS again. LAst I heard, Avid has about 5 or 6 new ISIS servers out there that shows are working with and testing. We almost went that route but it was to new las year for us to risk the switch. The biggest pain though is the file count and directories management issues when working with Unity that is PC/Windows based because you have a limit on how many directories and files you can have before it just clamps down and wont work anymore. Probably one of the more stressful parts of the job trying to find folders to delete stay below the limit.
Avid will take RED footage and work with it. It might try to convert it to MXF during the import but you can deal with that in your media creation settings.
It is important to be using a new, high-end, Avid-certified workstation to be able to work well with .RED footage - it's resource heavy material. If performance during editing is more of a concern than import time, then transcode to DNxHD proxy is fast and easy.
Avid mostly uses AMA when working with RED currently. There is also an new app called MetaFuze that can create dailies. Here are some quick videos I was able to dig up to help you out.
Avid was always a pain in the butt when my brother and I were at Chapman University's grad film program. We took our projects home to use Adobe Premiere and it worked flawlessly, especially with a nice RAID and the Mercury Engine. Our thesis project would not have been as quickly edited and reviewed had we been tied to the school's Avid workflow. That was with CS5, since Adobe CS6 was released, there simply is no question.
