We're gettin' There

I'm typing this up at 1:30am pacific time Friday morning.
By the time the sun comes up. there's a good chance that RTX 2014 Guardian applications will be live!

EDIT Here be the link : 2014 Guardian Applications

Some important things to consider if you're thinking of applying to be a Guardian:

Volunteering for RTX is hard work.
Lots of standing and walking (There were a few Guardians who wore pedometers all weekend), sometimes your job changes, and sometimes things don't go according to plan. You have to be open to change, cool with a crowd, and able to stand/walk for hours.

You are willing to be a Guardian first and a fan second.
That's not a close second. You're applying to work all weekend. You most likely will not have a chance to hang out with Staff/Crew. You will not be shuffled to the front of the line to get Ray or Joel's autographs. You will be manning those lines. You will be supporting Staff/Crew. You will be making sure that event is running smoothly!
It seems harsh (and it is NOT meant to be harsh), if you'd rather wait in lines for autographs and see all of the panels...then I suggest you buy a ticket and be an attendee. It's not an ultimatum, it's sound advice.

Guardians are responsible for their own travel, hotel, and food
This is strictly a volunteer gig. You get a shirt and a badge and our undying gratitude.

You will be representing Rooster Teeth and the Rooster Teeth Community
HOW FLIPPIN' COOL IS THAT?
It also means that you'll need to be patient, kind, attentive, and willing to work with a huge team.

If you are selected to be a Guardian, we will strive to give you all the information we possible can to prepare you for an intense weekend
We will have many tinychats, useful documents, and pre-convention meetings. They will not be all mandatory, but they will all be incredibly helpful (and all saved to be viewed later)

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Feel free to ask me anything about what a Guardian is and what you can expect from the experience!

Being a Guardian is a hell of a job that everyone appreciates. You'll hear it a lot and it is always the truth: We can't have RTX without Guardians...and we love you

Go forth and apply...and may the odds be ever in your favor.

I am so excited! I can not wait! I was worried because they announced it later then last year. This year will (without a doubt) be better than last year!!!

Nothing to worry about. These events take a long time to plan. This was everyone's first test of patience! XD

It looks to be an even bigger event than last year (15K attendance fpr RTX2014 according to Austin CC website), so will more Guardians be needed?

Also, will it be restricted again to applicants who 'can legally work in the US'?

Excellent question. I know that we want more Guardians this to cover attrition.
I would ask Barbara about the who can volunteer.
We had Canadian and Australian volunteers, so I don't see why not...but Barbara is the one to ask.

Thanks for all the info - it's helpful to hear it from someone who has done the job first hand.

I still have absolutely no desire to do this.

Yes, it would be great to help out RT and it would be fun to actually see you and Chris more, but no thanks. Hanging out and drinking beer sound like so much more fun.

I'm definitely applying to be a Guardian this year. I had a great time attending last year, but I'm the kind of person who likes to experience things from as many different sides as possible and I'm on a quest to give back to the community as much as possible in thanks for all that it has given me. Hopefully I'll be joining your crew!

Yeah!!! High five. I hoping to do something different this year. If that doesn't happen, then I will hopefully be back at Registration.

Being a Guardian sounds exactly like my kind of gig and your "things to consider" actually just make me want to get picked even more. =)

Serious Question. Right now it appears that I can apply and go to RTX. But if my money situation were to change, how would I let other people know and what procedure should I follow?

I would strongly suggest that you have everything situated money wise for the trip before applying to be a Guardian. We know that things happen and people have to back out for really solid reasons, but we ask that you know for sure if you're going to be able to make it before applying. It h...

I definitely want to apply to be a Guardian, and I know that it's not just going to be chilling with staff and getting their autographs. That said, does your average Guardian have the opportunity to do any of the "normal" attendee stuff? (I could live without panels, but just walking the floor, for example.) I'm applying either way, but I figure you're the person to ask about this!

This year @SirNarvy and I came up with 3 shift choices (Full time 12 hours, Morning shift 6 hours, and Afternoon shift 6 hours). Most folks will end up choosing the full time, but the options are there if you'd like an afternoon or morning for yourself. We also strive to give you time off for ...

Yeah, I put in full time just to make myself as available as possible for you guys, but the amount of consideration on your guys' part is really, really awesome.

Gonna apply again this year! I feel like I've gone to my fair share of panels and autograph signings. I'd gladly man a line all day if it means volunteering for Rooster Teeth.

If I ever become a Guardian and I happen to be paired with a staff member I will be like a Housecarl from Skyrim.

They hand me something to hold, "I am sworn to carry your burdens" as I shoulder the weight.

They ask me to get them some coffee to help keep them jazzed, "Honor to you my Thane" as I hand them the cup.

They ask me to help them handle the crowd to make a panel, "I am your sword and your shield" as I make a path through the horde for my Thane.
#14  Posted 1 year ago
FYI, any Guardian making bloodstains on walls and/or carpet must pay for cleanup.

It was such a great time last year. I became closer friends with members of the community, even closer than friends that live in the same city as me. I will be definitely applying again. Can't wait to work with you again Mary!

What are the hours typically like for the average guardian?
#18  Posted 1 year ago
It used to be open-to-close 10-12 hour shifts. We've given the option of 6 hours shifts this year. Most people end up going all 12 hours because they enjoy being a Guardian :)
#2  Posted 1 year ago
Wow... worded much better than I ever could. They should put you in charge or something.

What do the different sections entail? Stuff like Center Stage and Exhibitor Services? Also is volunteering for panels like doing line management for panels? Those are the only ones that seem kind of vague.
#25  Posted 1 year ago
Center Stage sets up gameplay events including signing up attendees.
Exhibitor Services are in charge of making sure all the Exhibitors have their needs taken care of.
Panels is in charge of the panel area on the fourth floor, making sure panels start on time, coordinating attendee load in/out, and sta...

I'm way too excited for this!

When do you think they'll start sending out acceptance emails? I really would like to be a Guardian and I'm not sure if I put enough info in my application...

Also, I would like to help a few days ahead (July 1-3) and I'd need to book accommodations accordingly.
#27  Posted 1 year ago
Other than stuffing swag bags, there's not much to do that many days before RTX.

Of course that doesn't mean you can't explore Austin!

Aww~ I thought maybe I could help out a few days before if they need people.

Also I'm so antsy about things. I just wanna be a guardian~~
