Yay! Early morning drunk tank! Now I don't have to choose later today between listening to the podcast or paying attention in my english class.

Wait, who am I kidding? I won't pay attention in English anyway.

I think GPS just became the new "interweb"; everyone has it, 3% of the population knows how it works.

There are (GPS) chips that you put in your dog, so in case your dog gets lost; you can locate your dog. My dog has one.

Most GPS devices have receivers, but they don't have transmitters. The receivers can be small enough to fit inside watches (got one), but they are not strong enough to transmit back, so it's like read only. The sensitivity of such devices has to be fairly small, so they are effected by quite a bit of noise and whatnot. Depends on what the noise floor is for each device really.

And in your car it is better to put the GPS device on the dash. While your car is not an actual Faraday cage, it can dampen the signal quite a bit.

Mostly it's about getting into sync. After you get in sync you are less likely to drop the signal, but if you loose sync it's harder to reestablish it, hence the "put it on the dashboard" trick, or hold it out the window for a while(before you start driving).

and yeah, Geoff has the RFID chip in his cat, and I know he knows that, but it was a funny bit. Most RDID chips are passive, so have a range of ...very small. Like...measure in centimeters for some devices, sometimes contact is required. The ones in the cats have an induced signal that "powers" the little antenna, so they can have a little distance to them. Some RFID chips can be read as far away at 15 feet...if you trust what contractors tell you. Again, its all about how sensitive the receiver is...can it detect your little signal bouncing back at it.

For the hotness of peppers. Generally the smaller the pepper the hotter it is. And the Capsaicin is in the seeds and if you dont want it to be as hot then take out the seeds and the inner membrane of the pepper and it wont be as hot.

Man I watch waaay too much Good Eats..

I would have to agree with Geoff. Although he wouldn't be only at the Pentagon in a bunker, He is just a Lieutenant General, But he is still a flag officer so he wouldn't be anywhere near the front lines.

For the lasers on boats. I read that we do have LARD (Long Range Acoustic Device) on boats and that can good a good job at keeping the priates at bay.
