Splinter Cell: Conviction I haven't really posted on this thing in like, forever, because...I dunno. I just don't use this site anymore...
Anyways, I felt I had to do so today.
I got a hold of Splinter Cell: Conviction recently...and man, is it BADASS. I know a lot of people are pissed off because the series isn't what it used to be, but god damn this is one of the greatest games I have ever played. Many complaints I have heard are about how the game somewhat moves from a stealth game to an action-packed shooter.
True, this game does make you shoot your way out of trouble quite often, especially towards the end. At one point I couldn't even tell this was supposed to be a stealth game. However, I feel it fits perfectly with the degradation of the Sam Fisher character. Fisher ain't what he used to be, because of certain plot points in recent games, and it is represented very well by this style of gameplay.
HOWEVER, this game can still be played stealthily. The stealth action, in my opinion, has only gotten more fun and interesting since the previous games. Sure, they took out many features, but somehow, the way this game plays...it just feels so much more fluid. Yes, there are parts where you're pretty much forced to shoot your way out, but it works in such a way that shouldn't really matter to anyone. The stealth element is still there, and it's still spectacular.
And if you like the standard Clancy storyline, then you will surely enjoy yourself, because the story, once again, in my opinion, is just awesome. Sure, it could be deeper, but in a way, the story is driven by the gameplay, and done so in such a way that just compels you to play straight through to the end.
I read the review that Mr. Stephen Totilo posted up on Kotaku. I feel I must mention one part of this review, as I can only think of his words when I try to describe this game. At one point, he mentions that the game "involves one of the best uses of gameplay to depict rage that I've ever witnessed." I am in complete and total agreement with this statement.
This part of the game is so intense and badass that I almost want to spoil everything right here. I won't, but you should know it when you see it. Elements like this are what makes this game a must-play. The greatness doesn't even end here, as there are a number of multiplayer and co-op modes. However, I've ranted to long.
If anyone of my friends here still actually check up on me, and if they feel like reading my thoughts on the co-op mode, or even just discussing the single player mode, just let me know by means of a comment or message. Let me just leave you with this little tidbit from the very beginning of the game.
"Understand this. The Sam Fisher you knew is dead."
