documented memory I just remembered. I was thinking about Autumn. Daylight savings and the like, I couldn't figure out the time difference. I remembered going trick or treating, but then, when was the best time to go? All my memories were from when it was dark out, but I know that awkwardly, that wasn't always the case. Some people showed up early, when you weren't ready, and some way too late.
It was Halloween once, I was a kid. My dad used to do really ornate Halloweens, it was his favorite holiday. THe entire house would be "haunted". I had returned from trick or treating with my candy bag, the lights were all turned on and the scariness was lost. We didn't get many trick or treaters due to the possibility of terror as children came to the door.
But now it wasn't so scary was it.
I heard people at the door and I go to look. I was young. Maybe 7? A group of 4 kids are at the door. They say trick or treat, but it's late.... The candy bin is gone, my dad and mom were snacking on it in the kitchen, talking to their neighborhood parent friends. I went in to get their attention to help, but they were busy... or, I was shy.
So I walked up to the door again, with the patiently, if confused, trick or treaters, and I gave them candy from my own bag. Not much, and I was too ashamed and polite, I asked whether they LIKED a candy before giving it to them. Each got one.
Who'd have thought I used to be so nice.
