Year Two Howdy, fellas.
After a long break from the site, I've finally decided to return and post another journal. I apologize for my 1 year absence, but I'm afraid it might be something you'll have to get used to. I've sort of grown past the site in a way... I don't find it as interesting as I used to, and often don't find logging on to be worth my time.
However, due to the long days and relative isolation provided by my current job, I've decided to return to the site and see if anyone will still be willing to talk to me (Yes, I've gotten that bored ). So with that said, here's what I've been up to over the past year:
-Completed my second year of college. Yeah, kind of an obvious one, but I felt it worth mentioning... especially since it's going by so quickly (can't believe I'm halfway done, already)! Classes didn't go quite as well this year, but my grades were still pretty solid (I still have about a 3.8 GPA). My slight drop in grades may have been due to my attempts to get out and socialize a little bit more... I may have simply slacked off at times as well. Hopefully I'll find the motivation to bring it a bit harder next year.
-Recovered from surgery. Remember my last journal? Yeah... ancient history, now. I am happy to say that I've made a full recovery over the past year, and have made it through winter workouts and spring practice with no major problems. I'm good to go for next season, and if I run and hit the weights hard this summer, there's a good chance I'll be starting.
-There were the fun things... both in and outside of college, I got to do some interesting new things. I got to tour the west coast (minus California, regrettably... we spent plenty of time in Portland and Seattle, though), find out what the pond on the north side of campus feels like in early May, worked as an RA (but quit after two months... turned out I hated the job), went to a few dances, danced horribly, and didn't care. All and all, it was definitely a more enjoyable experience than my last year, even if my grades may have suffered as a result.
...and the not so fun things. My grandma passed away on March 20, the day after my 20th birthday. There aren't many things I really feel like sharing about this, but I would like to mention that she was a wonderful, caring and selfless person, and that she will be greatly missed. She left us a third of her house (split between by dad and his two siblings), and since she only lived a half hour away, we were planning on moving into her house and selling ours. So far, we haven't gotten any offers (the market for middle-class houses is currently shit), but we're preparing to move regardless. We've replaced the carpet in the basement, replaced the carpet on the main level with hardwood floors, remodeled the kitchen, replaced the appliances, and have already stored some of our belongings there, so once we've sold the house, moving should be relatively easy.
So... what now? Well, currently I'm doing summer research in the Electrical Engineering department at UNL. The research is for the INBRE program (a research scholarship program I entered earlier this year). Mostly, I'm working with TiO2 thin films... using DC magnetron sputtering to deposit them, and using an ellipsometer to analyze them. I'm having a bit of trouble with the software I'm using, can't seem to come up with decent models and graph fits, and still don't seem to know what I'm doing half the time, but other than that, my research is going well.
So all of this leaves me at the beginning of July with a challenging, but interesting job (that pays fairly well), a full workout schedule, two houses, a lot of time on my hands, and still no girlfriend (meh, girls are dumb at this age)... a satisfactory (if somewhat awkward), position.
Fell free to leave a comment or send me a PM if you see me online. I'd love to know how your summer is going!
Best Wishes
