      Internet Friends

      --

My time here in the RT community has admittedly slowed to an occasional lurk. It wasn't always like this, I used to spend hours a day trolling the forums, watching videos, and chatting with RT friends in AIM. This was the first place that I really felt 'home' online. There were times when I was living abroad when this felt like the only home I had. Going to RVBTO and meeting RT users in my area cemented some lifelong friendships for me. If it weren't for RT I wouldn't be making comics at all. Even though I spend less time here than I'd like, I know the community lives on in a new group of people, enthusiastic about making online friends and sharing their lives with each other.

What brings me here today is my new project Clique Refresh. This is a story about Internet friends, who may never meet offline, and how they thrive in that environment. This isn't a story about how socially inept they are, and I'm by no means saying real space friends are useless either. This is just a story about being at home online. Much of the story comes from my own experience from right here at RT. I even made two of the characters meet on a forum that is a little nod to RT. Had to get it in there somewhere!

I'm not asking for your support, you've given me that in full over the years. I would, however, ask that you share the project. Get excited, and help others get excited. This is a project that would have never existed without the RT community. This is my love letter to all of you.

As she fights to the death in a cartoonist battle royale! This is a bit of a long journal... but I can't wait to share this stuff with you all-

      hero_05b.jpg
Episode 5 of Strip Search is out and features a very strange experience on the streets of Seattle… I won’t spoil anything but there is certainly a big surprise at the end!! You can see me scheming like a real Petyr Baelish in the very beginning... Muahahaha.

Strip Search is also coming to PAX East on FRIDAY 3/22 2:30pm-3:30pm in the Arachnid Theatre. The panel is shaping up to be a huge one and space is really limited, so head over early! Mike, Jerry, Graham, and half the cast will be there, and I’m proud to say I’ll be on the panel myself. So come cheer us on and ask those salacious questions you've been holding back.

      strip_search_pho_large_1024x1024_medium.strip_search_det_large_1024x1024_medium.
I was lucky enough to win the design challenge in the 3rd episode of Strip Search. the Official T-Shirts are now on sale through the Penny Arcade online store and even come in ladies sizes! I do receive 100% of the profits from the sales, and for that I am truly honored and grateful. I hope you all considering picking one up, not just to support me, but to show Strip Search to as many people as possible!

I want to cry pretty much everyday. A shirt of mine is on sale at Penny Arcade... I get to be on a panel with Gabe and Tycho with PLENTY of time to catch the Rooster Teeth panel... I met 11 other amazing artists... The internet has been very kind to me. I only hope to give everything I can to make each comic better than the last!

Lastly, if you haven't check out everything going on at FullPickle.com GET TO IT ALREADY. It's the new hub for [citation needed], Action Food, and my journal comic Cardigan Weather. PLUS we added out first video series, with much more to come. (hint... a 404 error might be fun to try and get)

Strip Search, Penny Arcade, LRR... Shiiiiit.

So I know I've been mumbling about being part of the new Penny Arcade project Strip Search. The site finally went live and you can see me being the cold-heartless bitch you all know and love here:

I can honestly say I had no idea what I was getting into. smiley12.gif

Oh also! You can vote for me or any of the other swanky artists in the news poll!

You guys gonna be my friends after I get pooped on by the internet for being on a reality show? Ughghghgh.

Also: Anyone watching me live in Seattle? I am moving there and would love to chat with a local!

      Welp

If you guys follow Penny Arcade, you might have heard about their reality show StripSearch. I just wanted to let you guys know I am so sorry I missed you this past month, but I was actually competing on the show. I wrote a whole big thing on my blog. Things might be a little crazy for me when the show airs, but I love you guys first and foremost. You liked my comics before I was anything more than a derp with an out of date tablet... which I guess is still true.

In other news I am officially a full time freelancing fool. So fluffing exciting you guise. [breaths heavily]

      You know...

I doubt I would get any "for fun only" drawings done if it weren't for the 15 minutes I spend doodling the Speed Paints every week during the RTpodcast. Despite the lag on my end and the usual mountain of work I should be doing... Well I just like finding the time for them and I love seeing that people get a kick out of them too. :D

      The Digital Artists' Lamentation Station

in Forums > The Digital Artists' Lamentation Station | Follow this topic

      2hyBM.gif

Being an artist is tough, at any level, and when you add in the cost and learning curve of software/hardware/gear things can get a little overwhelming. Are you struggling in Maya? Crying over Photoshop? Failing at Zbrush? Mediocre at maintaining an up to date portfolio? Are you an unemployed master of rendering or a student just trying to save up for your first Wacom? Step back from the metaphorical ledge, take a breath, and let’s hang out.

This thread is for discussion, questions, answers, weeping, support, screaming and chatter by digital artists for digital artists. I am tired of going to other forums to talk to artists when there is a lot of talent right here. After all, RT users make up the best community on the world wide web. That, and the Art forum is a nice old bird and she deserves some more active threads.

You don’t have to be a starving artist on the brink of a breakdown, we like you successful motivated types too. Feel free to link to your current projects/portfolios/websites when appropriate, but try to avoid shameless plugging.

      tl;dr Amy gets serious

Two characters I’m working on for a mock videogame:
      Hero Enemy
Most of you know me through my work on comics. Rightly so, I spend most of my creative free time producing [citation needed] and other projects on our website. I will always make comics. Visual narratives give me the weirdest boners. My first love is always just good old fashioned illustration.

Recently, I’ve been compiling my portfolio for conceptual art. Everything is 2d at the moment, but I’m close to beginning work in ZBrush and Maya once my schedule clears up in January. That’s one big issue with being a visual artist, you may know these programs on a professional level, but if you don’t have any proof, you’ll never get the chance to show potential employers. In all my day-jobs, I’ve been able to fudge experience to my needs, but not in this case. “Oh yeah I know how to professionally compile fixed camera assets for a Gatling gun.” WELL WHERE’S THE BEEF AMY? You have to nut up or shut up.

Working in production isn’t just a dream, it’s an inevitability. It’s a matter of time and work, but I WILL work for a production company of some kind. Even if my skills need honing now, all I have to do is work more. That’s it. Just more work. Easy.

      My typical day:

      6:30am Get up

      8:00am Get to office job

5:00pm Get home from office job

6:00pm – 2/3:00am Design Characters, sketch environments, develop weapons, dream up props, assemble color themes, paint over old work, research professionals, confront self-doubt, conceptual mid-bosses, storyboard fight scenes… etc etc etc

This has been my schedule every day, with exception to the days I work on a comic release. Sometimes I can sneak in creative work at my day job, and that helps. Some nights I pass out at midnight, but I make up for it later on. I try to limit myself to the most minimal amount of social activity I can. Writing this all out, I feel insane. If I could do this all day, I guess I’d just be a good employee and not a sociopath that spends more time on unpaid work than I do for my day-job paycheck. Right now all I can do is keep going until I’m at a place where I feel I’m ready to apply places. I’m definitely tired, maybe all the time, but I’m getting things done. Eventually I’m going to make some art team very happy when they realize how much work I’ll do for their projects. So, so much work.

I have some crazy things coming down the pipe...
I'm nearing the final round of a competition, preparing a portfolio for video game conceptual work, and in talks to do the art production for a little platformer my pal and web guru is heading up. I really hope to keep making great work. I just hate when I'm too busy to update [citation needed] more than once a week. It's funny, because I have only been out of my apartment for my day job and errands lately. This unprecedented influx of work came all at once and I'm doing my best to keep at it.

Right now, I am genuinely happy when I'm working. Last night I stayed up until 2am and got up this morning at 6am for my day job, but you know what? It felt great. It felt fucking astounding. I really hope to make it into an environment where I'm working professionally with other artists or a creative team (sooner the better). For right now, however, I'm content to put in my time and push myself to improve. That's more than most-

Just watched the last episode of StripSearch and without giving any real spoilers I just wanna say this: TONS of respect to you. I started reading your work because of the show, and I think you are an awesome cartoonista, competitor, all around individual, and I'd be honored if you'd let me shake your hand at RTX if you're going.

I'd say I'll be the guy in your StripSearch shirt, but I have a feeling there will be quite a few of those there already smiley0.gif

So, I don't think you know me despite us hanging with many of the same jerks lovely people on here, but I just wanted to say it's been such a treat seeing you on Strip Search and the process/journey you went through over those few days. And even though I was supremely bummed by today's episode's conclusion (Sorry if I'm inadvertently spoiling it for anyone reading this, but what are you doing reading through Amy's personal comments anyway! Shoo!) , I wanted to echo the sentiment Mike and Jerry left you with, which is that you are a force to be reckoned with and have undoubtedly gained a large following from your efforts on there. Count me as one of them. Cardigan Weather is great, you're great, and I can't wait to see you continue to develop as an artist.

Hope you're having a great day despite it probably being a bit bittersweet as well.
