his twitter was talking about the new ghostbusters Trailer(s), which most
people I know inside and outside of social media aren't too happy about.
Here is what he had to say on twitter:
To everyone who
has been sending me the "Ghostbusters most downvoted trailer ever"
links... It doesn't make me happy, I want GB to succeed.
one of my favorite films ever, and I don't want the franchise to be tainted
with a bad film. I'd love for it to be great.
My problem with
the new GB is that it is clearly a COMEDY first, SCI-FI second. The original
was SCI-FI with comedy mixed in. Not slapstick.
Don't get me wrong, this is a fair point.
Film is an ever-changing landscape and usually isn't the same
for very long. The film industry is really good at coming up with tons of
ideas, some of them being good, and some being the fucking worst. These
choices are made because all businesses need to make profit, and Hollywood’s
favourite ways of doing this is getting a series and redoing them. You
usually don't see it because it's so embedded in the industry now, but most
films are based off an already prominent IP; if that be a book, a comic or
really anything. Now, there are obviously ones that aren't, but it's
probably like 70% at present. There are many reasons why films are based
of other IP's.
#1: You usually already
have a fanbase
#2: Authors and comic
artists spend months developing characters meaning that they can spend more
time and effort on making the film look badass
#3: Everyone loves a bit
I'm gonna focus on point 3,
because it references to Ghostbusters better.
Everyone loves nostalgia.
People love to be
nostalgic about shit that happened 2 months ago, my personal definition of
nostalgia is if it's was 10 years ago and you want to see/do/buy/watch anything
from then so it can be like the good ol' days, then it's nostalgia. I
think that's fair. The film industry knows this, so they remake popular
films from long-ago-but-not-too-long-ago. Some turn out good/fine like
the new Star Wars and the Italian Job and some are utter turds, like the
Karate Kid and The Fantastic Four.
like to hope that the new ghostbusters is good, but at this point, so many
people already hate it before it’s even been released that’s it’s doomed to not
expect a lot. All we can do is hope…then
listen to what reddit says and agree with them.
