Luc Besson has dropped the first teaser trailer for his 2017 sci-fi epic, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevigne as time traveling special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the universe for the government of the human territories.
Their commander, played by Clive Owen, sets the duo with a mission to Alpha, an intergalactic city populated by diverse species who share their technology and resources. However, the metropolis is also home to sinister forces that could jeopardize mankind. And will, or it would be a really short movie.
Luc Besson, who wrote the screenplay and directs, is known for previous sci-fi projects such as The Fifth Element and Lucy.
This newest epic is based on a series of French comics, Valérian et Laureline (also sometimes simply referred to as Valérian) that ran from 1967 to 2010. The comics, which have since been collected into a graphic novel series, were created by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières.
The comics have been praised for their humor, complexity, and and political exploration, as well as the vivid depictions of alien species and worlds.
The original comic series has also been credited as an influence on well known Science Fiction and Fantasy properties such as Star Wars. For example, Leia's slave costume is reminiscient of one worn by Laureline in The Land Without Stars, and the Han Solo in carbonite scene has been compared to a scene in Empire of a Thousand Planets in which Valérian is encased in a liquid plastic. Even designs for Chewbacca, star destroyers, and Cloud City can potentially be traced back to the series.
The movie is due in theaters July 21, 2017.
