Every 4 years, it's like Christmas for me as the World Cup happens. 32 'A' Class teams playing top-notch Football, until there is only 1. The team that I've followed since the mid 90's has been Die Mannschaft, or Deutschland.

Currently they're kicking off their opening match against Portugal, or Ronaldo & 10 others...

      Should be a good match!!

    • Quick update

Been a while since I've updated this, so here's a quick update.

Found a job with Texas Tech as an accountant and have been enjoying it over the past 20 months. I'm going to be going back to grad school in about a year so I can sit for my CPA certification, and higher pay with whatever company I work with in the future.

Been playing a variety of games in the past 2 years. Everything from all 3 of the Final Fantasy XIII series, to SWTOR, to a lot of LoL, WoW, Civ V, and a bunch of different board games.

Built a second gaming pc and I'm pretty proud of my creation. Implemented a bunch of different changes than my first design (like cable management, SSD, etc...) and while those are nothing huge. I still consider it improvement.

My wife got a job teaching Choir at a Middle School and she is pretty good at it.

Been reading & keeping up with several different series: Kingkiller Chronicles, Wheel of Time (in Book 12), Honor Harrington, Safehold, and misc. Timothy Zahn books.

That's my life in a nutshell until now. Oh, and we got a puppy named Scrubs. He's been fantastic and hilarious puppy and I'll have to upload a picture or two later on.

It's official, I have a degree, and am looking for a job! Luckily for me, I'm still able to work as a Student Assistant to the Dean until I find a real job. So excited not to have to work about homework until I go back. Hoping I find that real job soon, so I can reward myself with getting GW2 and Diablo 3.

Got to pick my legacy name in SWTOR, and I'm glad I reached my goal of getting to start getting legacy levels, before Patch 1.2 comes out in a few weeks. :) All that playing during spring break paid off!!

I've been playing Skyrim on PC, for a little bit this past weekend, and I just killed my first dragon. Love the game!!

Been playing this for a while and I'm on the next to last boss battle, and I'm finding it a little harder to beat the two Titans and many waves of henchmen. Almost beat it earlier today, but got hit right before I was about to swing at the surviving Titan. Grr... I have to postpone the game until after Tuesday (2 papers, research, an accounting project and an exam to take on Tuesday).

Well maybe after one more try...

Steam is going to make me broke...

      That is all.

    • Haboob

Yesterday in West Texas we had a Haboob!! It's like a Giant sandstorm but worse. Way worse. The sky turns orange and visibility drops down to almost nothing (if you're lucky you get 1/4 a mile, but most places had less than that. Winds here were gusting in the mid 70s and we had power blackouts throughout the city.

I was working in my office at home when it went dark, and I thought to myself, "Surely it's not that late." I looked outside and was like "Holy Crap!!" It lasted about 10-15 minutes, but it was a hell of a storm. There were no fatalities in this storm but our airport had to divert all traffic away from the area in an emergency, and at least one plane on the ground was flipped over. The weather service said that we're going to be in for several more this year as our drought continues. This has been one of the worst years rain-wise. I mean we don't get much, only about 18 inches per year, but we're at about 3 inches so far. Ugh...

Someone made a joke on the radio that this "Dust Bowl" was the only Bowl (American College Football) that Lubbock would see, and that's probably a fairly accurate statement.

These usually are only about 1000 feet high, but this one was 8000 feet!!!

Today should be a lot calmer, but also a lot colder. It really feels like fall today!!

    • Civ V

How I love this game!! I finally had the funds to fix and replace the damaged DC cord in my laptop, and I've gotten myself back into playing Civ V again!!

I forgot how frustrating it is at times, and all the little nuances at the very beginning of a game, but after about 50 turns into it, I'm cruising right along with the British Empire, now the question of which victory I want to go after remains... Then to play as the Germans, Koreans, then the Americans. Though the Incans look pretty sweet as well.

Steam has had on sale a good bit of their THQ collection which was too good to pass up. And there's a lot of games there that I've wanted to play for a while like the various Red Factions, Darksiders, and Metro 2033, and my laptop can handle most of them. Only problem, my time is eaten up by school and homework, work, playing Civ V in my free time, and then spending time with my wife whenever she has free time, which is very little this semester. One day I'll be getting around to all these games. :)

    • A few quotes from a giant no longer here

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”

"That's been one of my mantras -- focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains."

"[Y]ou can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something -- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life."

"I read a study that measured the efficiency of locomotion for various species on the planet. The condor used the least energy to move a kilometer. Humans came in with a rather unimpressive showing about a third of the way down the list....That didn't look so good, but then someone at Scientific American had the insight to test the efficiency of lomotion for a man on a bicycle and a man on a bicycle blew the condor away.

That's what a computer is to me: the computer is the most remarkable tool that we've ever come up with. It's the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds."

“I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what’s next.”

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

“Why join the navy if you can be a pirate?”

“Recruiting is hard. It’s just finding the needles in the haystack. You can’t know enough in a one-hour interview.

So, in the end, it’s ultimately based on your gut. How do I feel about this person? What are they like when they’re challenged? I ask everybody that: ‘Why are you here?’ The answers themselves are not what you’re looking for. It’s the meta-data.”

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

“It comes from saying no to 1,000 things to make sure we don’t get on the wrong track or try to do too much.”

“Innovation has nothing to do with how many R&D dollars you have. When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R&D. It’s not about money. It’s about the people you have, how you’re led, and how much you get it.”

“Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles.”

      RIP Steve Jobs

Well, right about now, I was originally planning to be announcing that tickets for RvB:TX were on sale. Unfortunately, that's not going to be the case. You might have heard that the RT staff has their own event planed for late May. We, the organizers of RvB:TX, don't feel it will be possible to compete with a larger and better organized event, so we're officially canceling our event.

But all is not lost! We're keeping the group page for two reasons:

      1) RvB:TX will now be a hub for all RT fans in and around Texas. We'll keep people up to date on RT related events in and around Texas, from small meet ups to the RoosterTexas event the staff is planning. If you have not already done so, please watch the group to stay up to date on the news.

      2) We're planning a smaller get together in Austin this winter. It won't be as big as our original plans, but it'll still be a chance for fans to get together and have fun.

For more details, please see the journal here.

Friendly Neighborhood RvB:TX Admin here! Just a few updates on the group today:
      1) We officially have 200 members! Sweet! You Guys Rock!

      2) We'd really appreciate it if everyone watches the group and checks the forum every few weeks or so. We post polls and messages on the group and we need YOUR input to make sure that this RvB:TX will be the best yet. If you already watch the group, thanks a ton! If not, go here and click the watch button. There are also polls concerning likelihood of attendance and optimum ticket price in the group forum.

      3) The event is being tentatively scheduled for next March. Hope to see you there!

      4) We could really use the help of a Web Designer. if you or someone you know could help us get even a bare bones site running, it would be greatly appreciated. However, please note that this will be an act of volunteerism on your part. We'd love to pay you, but we just don't have the money. But isn't being able to say that you designed a site in order to celebrate the greatest Machinima series ever reward enough? If you are still interested, please contact myself, or one of the other group admins.

      5) Keep active in the group. The planning staff is constantly looking for cool ideas for events, and they are the best spot to get yours out there.

That's all folks! Keep your eyes glued to the screen for further updates.
