      Hello all!

I hope everyone is enjoying the first season of Achievement Haunter. The cast and crew have worked very hard to create a good looking, fun and entertaining show that we hope delivers. But I wanted to address something I keep seeing in the comments:

Is Haunter scripted? Yes and no (but mostly, no).

Television--or any quality entertainment format really--demands some sort of story or loose structure that many would describe as “satisfying” for the audience. In the horror genre, that usually means quality scares and/or destroying the monster. But, since we don’t know week-to-week if we will find a ghost, we plan a few situations and scares so we can be sure there’s a show. That said, sometimes these moments fail and do not end up in the episode. There are several story beats throughout any given episode; however, everything in between that is completely up to the cast and the random events of any given situation.

To better explain, let’s go back to my days on Immersion S3 and S4, a show that often placed Gavin and Michael in a labyrinth of video game related tasks and scenarios they would hilariously stumble through. Resident Evil, or even Surgeon Simulator for that matter, are really good examples. They are different formats but each have “scripted” elements; but what the lab rats do with those elements is completely up to them. It's what I like to call "Rats Through a Maze" method of storytelling.

For instance, in Resident Evil we set up several obstacles: a course with blind corners and tri hazards, a few zombies whose path and reactions were based on rules, and a clear goal at the end of the course—in this case a key. And each time we would change the Lab Rats camera POV because that was the test. But that’s it. I did not tell Gavin and Michael to try high-fiving three different ways; or how to reload their guns; or where the keys were. It’s all up to them how to deal with the situation.

Surgeon Simulator may be an even better example because their obstacle is right in front of them: save the patient before they bleed out. I set the parameters, add some props and spray lots of blood. What about the plate with fork and knife in the metal drawer? Only Michael knew about that. Gavin had no idea. All I told Michael was: “Look inside the drawer. And the material in the stomach is edible. Good luck.” That’s it. The rest was up to Michael and Gavin. And it’s one of the best moments of the episode!

Haunter is very similar. Did we bring a red ball to coax out Stacy? Yes. Did I tell Michael to pop it? No. Did I tell Lindsay to try and find ghost cats? Yes. Did I tell her to make a summoning circle? All her. Do we use specific tools in the episode based on the story? Yes. Do we script the results? Absolutely not. Do I propose Michael lock Jeremy in a closet? Absolutely. Do we tell Jeremy first? Hell no.

And for the record: I don’t know what the fuck happened to Jeremy at the Long Leaf Sawmill.

So certain beats of the ghost hunt are planned out ahead of time, sure. But all the space in between—and often times the beats themselves—are up to the team. It’s all based around what they experience and the story of the location. All the director does is make sure the audience has the information they need and encourage follow up if something is discovered.

Furthermore, we rarely manipulate the location during a ghost hunt. And the majority of the Story Times are shot on location the next day.

Ultimately, the show is a hybrid. The Story Time is partially scripted because the team needs to know the dates, details and story of the crazy shit that happens at these haunted locations. They need the beats to tell a story. But the rest—the improvisation that we then recreate—is entirely up to them. In the moment. But I’ll write more on the process of Story Time later on in the season.

      Hope that is illuminating!

      Enjoy the show,

      Daniel

      Hey all!

I'm trying to stay on top of these updates as we get closer to our Oct. 31st season premiere! This time--not only do I want to tease an episode below--but let everyone know that Achievement Haunter will be visiting RTX London! Get ready for some never before seen clips and scenes from the upcoming season!

Our Haunter panel will be Sunday, Sept. 16th at RTX London. We will tell some stories, share some initial findings and how this show is just an excuse to trap Jeremy in small, hot rooms. Please come with questions about ghosts, tactics or even the casts' personal experiences. But we've got our locations! Don't worry about that.

On that note, check out this BTS photo from a recent ghost hunt in Louisiana at a creepy gothic style jail. Spooky? Maybe.

      Hey all!

Last night we filmed our first Story Time segment for the season. We break up our episodes into three sections: the Clubhouse--in which we tell the story of our haunted location in a roundtable; the Story Time--in which we put moving pictures to those stories; then the Ghost Hunt, filmed on location across the country (and perhaps the world).

Attached is a photo of one of my favorite shots from the evening. Night shooting is extremely difficult. You need a capable crew, probably working in difficult terrain. We have to get a crane and put a light 30 feet in the air so it's high enough to mimic moonlight. It's hard but ultimately looks pretty good on camera.

      1413501-1534880506638-Jeremy_Tracks_BTS.

I'll keep sharing more as we continue our journey telling stories of the dead...or undead depending on your point of view.

From one skeptic to another, why are you a skeptic? (Re: "Eternally skeptic," signature)

Because I base most--not all ofc--of my views and decisions on evidence. Look up the definition of skeptic. It doesn't mean you don't believe anything. It means you question everything.

      Hello all!

It’s finally here! The Achievement Hunter Crew has been talking about hunting monsters and ghosts for a while now so we’re all excited to share the pilot of Achievement Haunter with you. (Watch it here now!) If you don’t know about the show, @geoff challenges the AH crew to explore a haunted location and draw out the lingering paranormal spirits using fear as their tactic.

There are many questions we try to answer in the show: Do ghosts exist? Who is the bravest member of Achievement Hunter? Who can make Gavin shit his pants first? All important questions! And we want to tackle more in a full season, but the only way that will happen is if you watch it! Love it! And leave comments! We want to hear feedback, favorite moments and what excites you about the show.

      I’ll go first.

I’m excited because we try very hard to recreate the events of Yorktown Memorial in a unique and funny way. Combining horror and comedy is difficult, but I like playing in that sandbox. We hope you enjoy the cinematography as well as the jokes AH dreams up around the campfire. In addition, we want to push the boundaries beyond shows like Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures and MTV’s FEAR. Instead of following the rules, our ghost hunters are going to act like idiots, scare each other and actively try to antagonize the spirits--the opposite of what the professionals would do!

We hope you all enjoy the episode and let us make more!

      Eternally skeptic,

      Daniel

      Hello all!

I'm sure the AH Crew have already spoiled some stuff, or maybe they haven't! But I get the sense people are excited to discover if Geoff and the gang found any ghosts on our recent adventure. I can't say anything for sure, but I did snap two photos I'll share: one of a spooky tree that looked nice all lit up, and another of the crew sitting around the campfire telling stories. This element--of story--is just one aspect that will set Achievement Hunters apart from other paranormal reality shows.

      Hello all!

Guess what? That’s right. Burnie is as handsome in person as he is on camera. Wait, that wasn’t your question? Oh, right…

Immersion is back and bigger than ever! I’m excited to share the trailer for season 4 featuring host @burnie and returning lab rats @Michael and @gavino. We’ve really pushed the envelope this season and have tried some new and exciting stuff. You’ve already seen the Warthog blow up (or maybe you haven’t?) but that barely scratches the surface of the crazy things we’ve made Michael and Gavin do this season.

Not only that, but this season we have special bonus episodes of Immersion exclusively for FIRST members. That’s right, every single episode is really TWO episodes. And, on top of that, we show you how we pull it off with some amazing behind-the-scenes packages. So, if you want to see new lab rats, and maybe some old ones (hint hint), I encourage you to sign up for a free 30-day trial.

      Watch the trailer here!

Thank you to all the fans who help make this show possible. Without your support we wouldn’t be able to do it. (And that’s extremely true with our first episode.)

Season 4 premieres November 9 with Hitman in Real Life, the episode we filmed at RTX 2016.

Hi! I'm replying to your reply on the 'Breakthrough' comment and my issue was mostly that the discussion and the actual lab work didn't really line up. I work with cancer cells so i am a bit biased.

      Answered: Aug 17, 2016

That's fair. The only thing that was really fact based was the idea of "tagging" cancer cells so white blood cells might attack them. That's accurate right? That idea? Otherwise, yeah, the time frame, the actual actions...well, I couldn't get it 100% accurate on such a short time frame. Did you like the twist though?

Hi, I just wanted to say I loved the RT Doc. I really was impressed with the tone, the cuts, and the story you shaped. I hope you and the rest of the team continues to complete projects that help provide deeper insight in the development of RT shows. I know there is a lot that goes into it, and I think the stories you would tell would be very valuable.

      newer version
I am interested in providing Monty and the rest of Team RWBY, with ideas and was wondering if you could recommend me. I am putting one of my earlier ideas below. Tell me if it is any good.
      This is the updated version
A guy named Lan Jingshen, he uses a pair of long nun chucks with guns at the ends, the nun chucks can connect into a staff, and when connected the guns gain more fire power and can fire in the directions the tips are pointing at. Also it can become a bow if he bends the chains at the right angles. However, his true forte is hand to hand combat. He has high mastery of Aura (Meditates daily to train his Aura), his semblance is manipulation of pure energy, and when using his full strength, blue lines cover his entire body and he gains enhanced abilities. He has messy black hair with azure highlights, wears a pair of glasses that change into a mask when he begins combat, has a blue and black trench coat along with a pair of black pants with two blue steaks running down the sides, and when fighting takes off the coat in this case he wears a blue and black tank top, Also wears black gloves. Height wise he would be a bit taller than Yang. Body is covered with scars of various shapes and sizes due to his frequent fights with High level Grimm. Large tattoo on his back (I’ll send you a rough sketch of it if you like the character). His combat style is formless, and draws from a myriad of martial arts styles. He also has a pet Golden Retriever, the golden retriever enjoys stealing other people’s laundry, and always tries to kiss up to people.
I would also like to put in his personality in case it is (and some back story too). A calm cool guy, who's always the peacemaker, and is very devoted to whatever he sets his mind to, he would also be very learned, polite, and versatile ( able to use most weapons if necessary) Doesn't speak very loudly, and is sometimes ignored. Very good at making friends and is rather social, in a detached way ( but although there are many who he calls friend, before he met team RWBY there were none he truly believed to be his friend, except his master). Believes that the best way for a person to become stronger and learn is for them to experience things themselves, so he often keeps knowledge to himself, even if it would be beneficial for the other person to know. He is wise far beyond his years, one of the main reasons he came to Beacon was to find that “special someone†his grandpa always told him about. I think it would be humorous if he developed a crush on Yang, and as a result becomes very awkward and a bit clumsy whenever she is near. He also trains in a lot of his spare time in fact his daily regime is kill 10 powerful Grimm a day. Back story is that he woke up by the sea when he was 4 with no memory, he is found by the nearby villagers and is taken care of, during this time he almost lived in local library, and educated himself there. He later meets a man who would become his teacher; a white tiger Faunus named Brom Silverfang, who was a founding member of White Fang, but left after some of the organizations more brutal operations. Lan makes his nun chuk/staff/ gun from parts found in a dump in a city he travels to. He also learns a variety of skills on his travels (cooking, clothes making, engineering, zoology, etc.) but has almost zero pop culture knowledge. During his travels, he joined White Fang for a few months and also was employed by the Schnee company for a few years (currently owns some of its high value stocks), in both cases he learned many of the secrets in both organizations. He also has experience in the underground crime world (learning the ways of the street). I think it would also be fun if at one point he encountered Yang and Ruby before they were adopted, because this could help them connect later in. Later in his travels with his master (when he is around 15) he discovers an ancient piece of technology called INDEX, and after gaining more mastery of his AURA he uses INDEX as a base to create a weapon called the ERUDITE ARMORY, which can transform into any weapon he knows how to make (able to fill the sky with a menagerie of different armaments). It is very heavy and difficult to use so he doesn't use it often, because of the massive amount of aura it consumes while in use. His master is later killed by a giant Grimm know as Shade the Eighth Terror (Shade cannot be harmed by purely physical attacks, and that is all Brom had , even though they were super powerful physical attacks that were able to cleave mountains), but by that time Lan was skilled enough to kill it with his Aura infused ERUDITE ARMORY. When the Shade died, part of its essence infected Lan, and slowly eats away at his soul, because of this his AURA was greatly weakened and now can only use the ERUDITE ARMORY for 30 seconds a day. However, Brom’s soul entered into Lan as well and helps him keep SHADE at bay (the downside is Lan now has the crazy, perverted old man yammering at him 24/7). Was noticed by BEACON and gained a combat scholarship just like RUBY after saving a group of elite hunters from high class monsters (this was before he battled with the SHADE, which took place 3 months before he was going to transfer to BEACON). Currently he is much weakened due to the SHADE’s essence infecting him (sometimes causing to lose control of himself and turning into a half-Grimm state), his current combat ability (without using the armory) is slightly higher than Pyrrha’s. Right now is trying to control the Grimm inside.
He is 17 or 18 years old.

Daniel I was wondering if I could be a small source of ideas for the RWBY show, I don't have the time for internships (although I would really like to) but I feel that I can give some good ideas. I would especially like to communicate with Monty Oum (even though I know he's in SUPER BURST WORK MODE most of the time), I'm posting one of my earliest ideas below, if you think it's any good please recommend me.

I have an idea for a character for RWBY if your interested, a guy named Lan ( chinese for blue) uses a pair of long nun chucks with guns at the ends, the nun chucks can connect into a staff, and when connectted the guns gain more fire power, and can fire in the directions the tips are pointing at. has spiky black hair, a blue and black coat and pants, and when fighting takes off the coat. also wears black gloves. I think it would also be fun for him to have a crush on Yang.

expanding on my Lan idea, I know this probably won't be read, my other one also, but I would also like to put in his personality in case it is ( and some back story too). A calm cool guy, who's always the peacemaker, and is very devoted to whatever he sets his mid to, kind of like yasha from asura's wrath,
He would also be very learned, polite, and versatile ( able to use most weapons if necessary) Doesn't speak very loudly, and is sometimes ignored. very good at making friends and is rather social, in a detached way, but whenever Yang is near, he becomes very awkward and a bit clumsy. Back story is that he woke up by the sea when he was 5 with no memory, made his way to a local library, and educated himself there, later meeting a man who would become his teacher. Was noticed by BEACON and gained a combat scholarship just like RUBY.
I would put more of my ideas, but you probably won't read it all initially, I've been reposting a lot since most cast and crew don't read their comments much
