My baby sister has a home that Martha Stewart would envy. Every room is perfectly decorated to be cozy and welcoming. I visited this last weekend and her basement guestroom and bath were nicer than my entire house. My only complaint was that the only window to the room looked out into a window well that was filled only with dead leaves. I told her I would work on coming up with some nice way to decorate it and today sent her the following letter:

      Dear E:

I was thinking maybe you could put a nativity scene into the guest room Window of Despair, but I’ve discovered that all outdoor nativity sets on the planet seem to be specifically designed to be as ugly as humanly possible. My theory is that it is some sort of test of faith. Surely only a “True Blue” devotee of Jesus et al. will put out a Nativity Set on their lawn despite the shame and humiliation of displaying something so ugly that Mother Teresa herself would want to convert to Islam upon viewing the abomination of yellowed plastic and/or rusted steel currently available.

Considering the rich tradition of Christian art over the last thousand years, I’m frankly disappointed in the human race for not being able to come up with something better. I’m going to have to think about the problem; surely there is a solution.

In the meantime, consider some of these charming and whimsical dioramas that might bring that touch of elegance to your guest room window:

      1. A restful scene from a popular science fiction franchise:

      555403_366761520089576_190723880_n1_zpsw

      2. Nothing says Christmas like a diorama of the Battle of Stalingrad. Who doesn’t love watching Nazi’s getting frostbite?

      5_zpss9fd8wm3.jpg

      3. Why not celebrate delicious winter delicacies with a Donner Party scene?

      4161296758_aa78704fd0_b_zpsix6vveuu.jpg

      4. Perhaps you’d like a politically-charged display warning of the dangers of climate change with scenes of our brave ancestors as they suffered through our most recent ice age:

      Little_world_Aichi_prefecture_-_Main_exh

      5. Or why not show off your favorite fantasy-based TV show with this classy Game of Thrones: Direwolf winter scene?

      DSM5101_1_zpsh1n1fbzs.jpg

      6. …or just sell out to Big Candy with a Peep display:

      87d8f8a1946aa84b7c628f2321c5a310_zpsbzli

      Other winter-themed dioramas to consider:

“I can’t feel my feet!” Washington crosses the Potomac"

“Who needs potatoes? The Dutch Hunger 1944”

“I smell something burning! The 1851 Fire at the Library of Congress"

“Offsides are delicious! The 1972 Andes Soccer Team Plane Crash"

I hope this has given you inspiration for decorating. Merry Christmas!

      Love, Linnea

    • Halloween!

      Elnea

If you're like me (and who isn't?), you're stuck at home this year waiting around from 3pm-8pm for trick-or-treaters to show up and demand tribute. This means you have to be within eight feet of your front door at all times to avoid having your house egged. It also means you can't do anything which will require more than 90 second stretches of time. This can set you up for five very long boring hours unless you're prepared. So I've compiled this list of things to do tonight which I will share with you because I'm nice that way.

      1. Look at Facebook on your phone and enjoy the photos of all your friends dressed up at parties. F*%rs.

      2. Put away your phone.

      3. Organize your wallet. Organize your dollar bills by date of issue!

      4. Dance insanely while shouting, "I dance to your glory, O Satan!". If you do this with the door open, you will have more treats for yourself at the end of the night.

      5. Flip through your Norwegian language phrasebook. "To glass øl, takk!"

      6. Look for your keys. They're usually by the front door.

      7. Eat candy.

      8. Play with your cat with that red laser pointer thing.

      9. Look for that red laser pointer thing. It's probably with your keys.

      10. Draw a face on your hand. Use your new hand puppet to have a Norwegian conversation with your cat.

      11. Compare and contrast your left and right thumbs.

      12. Name all the amino acids.

      13. Burma!

    • Monty

      Elnea

I am so sad to hear of Monty's passing. I learned about him, as many of us did, after his amazing "Haloid" video and an interview one of the gaming websites did with him. He was obviously a very self-motivated, talented young man. When Roosterteeth hired him I was so thrilled for both him and Roosterteeth; I knew it would be a wonderful match. I'm going to sound like the old 50-year-old lady I am, but one thing that strikes me about the modern day is the way people can hear about and pay tribute when they hear of a death of someone that has affected them in some way. It is so sad, but truly wonderful, that so many people loved Monty so much and they have a forum like Roosterteeth to share their feelings and grieve together. And it is also very odd, but special, that Monty will live on in his motion capture work... I'm sure we all recognize some of his signature moves in his animations.

Goodbye, Monty, you were an amazing young man. And I send my deepest sympathies for his family and close friends.

I REALLY want Dr Halsey's jacket from the Spartan Ops missions. And I would just wear it around. As a jacket. To work. 'Cause I'm like that.

Dude, there are slots for pens on the arm. Or... wires, or syringes, or whatever she's got there. Why aren't all jackets made like that?

I might have to take a tailoring class next spring so I can make one. I find a vast majority of my adult education courses are motivated by Halo projects. (That's not normal, is it?)

Until then I have to satisfy myself with my Bioware N7 hoodie and my Blizzard StarCraft Kerrigan Ghost Jacket. And yeah, I wear them to class. What are you thinking, 343?! Think of the free advertising as I influence the young minds of tomorrow! Now make me a Halsey Jacket, bitches!

    • Help with my Final Project

      Elnea

Here's the blurb I wrote for one of the photos for my photography final project which is on female fictional character toys in American pop culture (okay it's just pictures of all my dollies, shut up). I'm really anxious about getting all the facts correct. Do I have the following right?

      * * *
WOMEN OF HALO, developed by Bungie Studios
CORTANA – Joyride Halo Series 1 (purple), 2003, McFarlane Halo 3 (blue), 2010
PINK SPARTAN (honorary female) – Joyride Special Edition, 2005
HALO REACH Series 6 KAT – McFarlane Toys 2012
HALO 4 SARAH PALMER – Square Enix 2013, character developed by 343 Industries

The videogame Halo by Bungie launched the Microsoft Xbox gaming system in November 2001. The story features a supersoldier called “Master Chief” who is ordered around by Cortana, a miniature and mostly naked blue-violet Artificial Intelligence hologram. Halo was an instant hit and over the following decade Master Chief and Cortana became icons of the videogame industry. The game's sequel, Halo 2 (2004), introduced online multiplayer mode. Players could choose their avatar armor colors, but female players were stuck playing in male armor. The online machinima web series “Red Vs Blue” introduced a male character wearing pink armor and in 2005 Joyride Studios released a limited edition of 2000 pink Spartan action figures which sold out before they were even released. Female Halo players became increasingly vocal, and groups like “Clan PMS” and “The Frag Dolls” showed that women could play Halo as well as the men. Halo 3 (2007) introduced a female voice variant for multiplayers (but the armor was still male). Finally in Halo: Reach (2010) women could play the campaign in female armor, remarkable for being just as bulky and unflattering as the armor on their male counterparts (rather than skimpy and sexy as in other games aimed at men). In Halo 4 (2012), players could play downloadable missions called “Spartan Ops” as female soldiers under the command of no-nonsense supersoldier Sarah Palmer. Other impressive major female characters in the Halo series include Halo 2’s Commander Keyes, “the ballsiest officer in the fleet”, who dies heroically later in the series, as well as Dr. Halsey, a genius genetic engineer and mastermind of the supersoldier program.

Hey Elnea. If I may, I'd like your opinion on something.

There was a recently-revealed rule of 343's that any sexism in game chat would result in a permanent ban from the game. It's causing quite the stir of debates on whether or not it's overkill.

I'd like your input, as you were the first female Halo fan to come to mind. Have you dealt with sexism over Xbox Live? Do you wear a headset that often? Do you think this feature could be easily abused? Thanks for your time!

Okay I just rediscovered the comments section on my profile. I am filled with shame that I only just figured that out. Yeah I got plenty of horrible sexist comments when I used to play Halo multiplayer, but then I learned the trick of not ever playing multiplayer games and the problem was solved. smiley8.gif

To say "no" in Latin is sort of a bitch. I think it's like saying "no" in Japanese, you have to do something periphrastic to make it work. I mean, I have a feeling replacing "no" with "iie" might make you sound like a jerk eventually.

Anyway, uh, you could try bonus conatus tui est, frater, sed non -- it's pretty fucked up grammatically, but that's where I'd start haha.

Lauren, what orchestral instrument most sounds like a cat meowing?

Well if played CORRECTLY then none of them do. :D

But if you think about making animal noises (a la trumpets making whinny horse noises) then a clarinet can make some AWESOME meow wailing noises. Brushes on a snare can get you some purrs. And a sax can come close.
