As you guys know, my family is mixed religion; my mother is Jewish, my father is Protestant and I and my two sisters all married Catholics. It gets a little confusing in December, but it makes for LOTS of presents!

Please enjoy (?) my HAFT Half-Jewish Christmas Video and Happy Hanukkah!

So last night I went over to a girlfriend's house and we watched Lawrence of Arabia, a movie I'd never seen before. This girlfriend is older than me, in her 70s I think, and what was so funny is all during the movie she would point out things to me such as: "Look at all the extras and horses! You should realize those aren't CGI. Those are real people!" This made me extremely happy as apparently she thinks I am young enough not to remember the old days before computers. Also, I realized that my problem of not being able to distinguish the age of anyone between 16 and 30 must get progressively worse as you get older. That is, she must think everyone 35-60 looks the same, which possibly means she thinks I am 35. I call that a win!

In other news, my credit card information got stolen again and this was picked up by the good people at Target Visa. I think I might try Google Wallet. Has anyone used it?

So today on the treadmill I had an idea for a funny song about Sarah Palmer, but I don't know much about her. Was she in any of the Halo novels (graphic or otherwise) or was she written specifically for the Halo 4 game? Do we know what colony world she came from? What is her job title? Does she like long walks on the beach? What are her favorite turn-ons? Need more data!

In other news, I work out twice a week with a personal trainer because my dizziness makes me so sedentary and I'm convinced that all the stuff about good nutrition is a distant second to what is really important, namely exercise, as in getting off your butt a few minutes a day. Today my trainer asked me to hop with both feet onto a little step and I really had to think about it before I did it; I haven't "hopped" onto anything in like five or six years. It's so weird I had to think about it though and just tried hopping in place first before hopping up the four inches or whatever it was. So weird. I think it would be like if you didn't ride a bike for ten years and then had to ride; you'd have to think about it a little before you started pedaling away, right? No, just me? Oh well. Anyway, I successfully beat the hopping challenge. Please send me a medal.

I've been reading the Invincible Iron Man Omnibuses 1 & 2 tonight which cover about the first 30 issues of the title; I'm giving them five stars. If you have a chance to read them or read the comics online at Marvel.com, do it. A bit of trivia: The artist is Salvador Larocca and his work has a distinctive style because the images aren't inked. Marvel takes his pencil drawings and scans them as is, just darkening the image with art software. So his lines are softer and more wiggly. You don't see that with many comic artists. I love his work. He did an Xtreme Xmen series around ten years ago which was also beautiful. Anyway, here's a sample page. Gorgeous!

I just worked through the Spartan Ops with my son and I LOVE Sarah Palmer, although it's mostly because she is voiced by Jennifer Hale a.k.a. Ms. Marvel a.k.a. SWTOR female trooper a.k.a. Bastila a.k.a. Female Commander Shepard. But why is she SO cranky? I have this theory that part of the way they augmented the Spartan-IV females is to just give them PMS 24/7. Because, seriously, that would be scary. (No boys are allowed to make this same observation, btw, because life is unfair.) I also love that when I look at my hand in multiplayer I have a girl hand and not a big meaty Master Chief hand. It's so much more fun when I can be a girl. A BIG CRANKY GIRL. smiley12.gif

    • Global Warming

      Elnea

So here's what I think about global warming. Read the whole thing before you go bananas, because my opinions invariably seem to piss off both the left and right side.

Although the world may be warming, I'm not convinced carbon dioxide is the cause. It could be, but all the evidence I have seen has been observational, and we all know correlation is not the same as causation. Right? Of course right. Certainly carbon dioxide levels are higher than they've ever been, but so are a lot of other things. That being said, I was raised by artsy hippies and have been recycling since I was little. In my opinion, pollution is bad; if nothing else it just makes a mess. So if the concept of global warming makes people pollute less, it's fine with me.

Okay, have at me. Go ahead, I can take it.

    • Veterans Day

      Elnea

By now you all know I am a complete armed forces groupie. I have family and friends who are presently in or veterans of every branch of the US military (including Merchant Marines and National Guard!). Today, as every day, I thank you for your service. You're my heroes!

As to more mundane matters: Hey www.halowaypointstore.com , why no girl's clothes? Over at the Bioware Mass Effect store I can have T shirts, tank tops, hoodies and coats in a girly size. Cough up the girlie Halo 4 swag or lose out to etsy!

Today I've mostly lounged around like a bum with the cats because it's 67 degrees (F) outside and how can I resist? Global warming is working out really well for Canada and the Midwest, I'm sorry to say. (Well, slightly sorry.) I also bought myself sweet Bioware swag, and ordered the upcoming Master Chief figure and the (disappointingly opaque) Cortana toy. At this point it is a matter of honor that I have at least one copy of every Master Chief and Cortana ever made. The only one I don't have is a Series 1 Cortana, because I remember passing it over when it was out for $15 and it makes me crazy to consider paying hundreds of dollars for it. My favorite one is the big Chief hand holding the little chip with Cortana coming out. So pretty!

    • I wanted pears, but not like this!

      Elnea

Today my landlord came over to put on a new storm door and there was so much racket (terrifying the cats) that I went out and did errands, first stopping at Toyota to get my Venza's oil changed. The service guy on duty said, "Hey, where's the Camry?" How do people remember other people much less their cars?! I can barely remember my students and I take photos of them and make them wear nametags! When I was still a practicing retina surgeon I never could remember any of my patients if I ran into them out in the world. I would remember their retinas, though. That makes me weird, right? Anyway, then I went to Whole Foods to buy yummy pears but when I got home they were grapefruit (s?). It's things like that that worry me I might actually be asleep. I'm still hoping for Robert Downey Jr. to show up. That would make this dream far more sexy.

Helpful Hint #1 for Job Seekers: Don't wear this hat Fox.jpg

Today I was down on the Rush University campus and there was a very serious-looking young woman dressed very nicely walking down the street. She was also wearing a wacky hat that looked like a fox head. It was really cute, but it didn't make her look particularly trustworthy or employable. I guess it would be good if you were interviewing for a job at an anime house, or a Japanese cat café?

One of my students texted me today saying she's been looking for a job for 3 months and should she drop her master's degree from her resume. I told her she should drop it if she wants a job working at McDonald's, but if she wants a job she will be able to stand, she should leave it. I know so many people, including my go-getter corporate sister, who are having no luck finding jobs despite many interviews.

I have a lot of Halo paraphernalia I can't part with, like a giant version of the Halo 3 game box I won at a Gamestop midnight event, or the Legendary Edition packaging from Halo 3 and Halo Reach

I have the Mater Chief Picture from inside the packaging from the Halo 3 Legendary edition on the wall, and the box from that, The box from my Reach legendary edition (And Reach Xbox) and I have one of those huge boxes from our Reach Midnight release, which I won also.

I also Have the door sign with be there or be square from Bioshock 2's midnight. I love having my fiance work at gamestop so they like me there.

The Hulk was my personal trainer, he taught me I just have to drag things to the ground and make them stop moving. I've been known on mythical rare occasions to go airborne but it feels out of my element. I tend to keep things on my feet or drag things to the ground where my grappling is at its strongest.

Mother Earth, feed me your strength!

Elnea, all these years I have been following you on this site, all these years of journals, comics, sims videos, and random conversations about eye surgery... and I only have one question- how do you pronounce your username? its always been a question in my mind.

I don't really know. My real name is Linnea (linn-NAY-ah), and when I was signing up for the scifi.com forums I tried Linnea and it was taken, so I tried LaNea, also taken, and then I just tried the Spanish masculine "El" and Elnea was a free handle. I always thought of it as el-NAY-ah, like my RL name, but so many people at conventions call me "el-NEE-ah" that I've gotten used to answering to either one. So take your pick!

I made that chiropractic appointment well over a month ago, before the onset of these headaches. The appointment is really not for headaches, it is for a reevaluation of my spine, which has not been thoroughly checked in about 12-13 years. I was diagnosed with scoliosis in middle school (with a 4 degree right twist to the spine at the time). In the last year or so, I've come to suspect that it has worsened somewhat.

The appointment also comes with massage therapy, which I can tell I need badly right now.

The idea is the image of the rooster is a common icon with many different latino cultures from the Caribbean to Argentina, from Brazil to Peru and most other connected points.

Plus, roosters do tend to have that macho strut.

Although many, many people, Latino or not, were asking the very same question you did.

I am still not necessarily convinced of that explanation. I understand it, but it seems a little weak. And while it is a neat picture, many people, myself included, were less than thrilled to see it chosen as the winner of the poster contest.

Actually the hobby shop where I bought the figure and play D&D at has a painting station. So as long as you buy the figures there they will provide the basic stuff to paint it with. So I;'ve been going early to D&D the last 2 weeks and spending an hour or so squinting at Klayed with tiny brushes and lots of paint.

I don't know what I do to my wallet, but things get soaked in there for some strange reason. At least I'm good with remembering that sort of stuff so long as I'm using it on a regular basis. I'm pretty sure I'll have to try to write it in the wallet and see if it somehow doesn't mysteriously dissolve in this secret water that it seems to drown in when Spring Break comes up.

You're assuming way too much with my wearing underpants. I did think that for my one and only tattoo I should get a giant script of 0's and 1's, but certain series of them would correspond to things I use. I'm better at recalling events if I have a physical item to tie them to. So I could be, "oh hey, dorm door, that's the cypher tattooed on my wrist bone thingie *check bits* oh right right right, I remember that one!"

Actually you're not assuming way too much with my wearing underpants, but that could possibly enter the scenario of being awkward with me in shirt no pants pulling open my underwear. I could write it on the outside of the underwear, but that's just a poor viewing angle and a better chance for the airport backscatter machines to read them. Damn it, now I definitely wouldn't because I'm too paranoid over security breaches so now I'll have someone from TSA raiding my room. But at least if I did have a girl see me in the hall in shirt no pants, and we ended up falling in Hollywood love with loves of fat babies we can tell the story of how we met or why I write things on the inside of my underwear.

Not very well, but I practiced for a bit out of curiosity and ended up getting a lock picking kit (and reading up the legalese on possession of etc etc). It still takes me a long time since I only practiced it for about a month, maybe 30-60mins in a calm setting and can only do standard six pin tumblers atm with a pick and a tension tool. I was sort of nervous with having someone walk by (one thing to tell my friends I pick locks and they know the kind of person I am not to go breaking into peoples rooms and another for people in my dorm seeing me pick a lock and I'm practically a stranger to them), so I only went with one quick pass (which made it harder since I was rushing). I ended up having to go with an improvised slim instead and defeating the lock that way. In hindsight, the doors/locks in our dorm are very poorly installed. With a slim and 1/2 min tops each door I'm pretty sure you could have a field day looting the entire hall. They need to at the very least plate the doors to prevent it. Which is weird since there is one door between the two engi halls that actually is plated to stop that type of attack vector, which makes me think that at some point someone came to that realization. I should make a stop by Home Depot to pick up a metal plate and do some diy to my door as well. But then I'm screwed if I forget my password again. Maybe some motion detectors and a robot that cares only for my life and my property and seeks the blood of all who would endanger either. But that would make bringing a girl over awkward as well.
