    • RTX 2016 — Hot Damn

      James NWETS

I've been home almost two weeks and this is my first real opportunity to sit down and write a real recap of my time at RTX 2016. This is the first time since 2012 that I have been able to attend the event, and god damn was it good. But instead of doing a play-by-play, I have a few areas I wanted to touch on to condense my experiences.

      Being Back in Austin

The first time I ever visited Austin was for RTX 2012. Back then, I had very little appreciation for the city, mostly in part to my only being there for 4 days. The heat and the atmosphere rubbed me the wrong way and everything felt too busy. This particular trip was my third time to the city, and something about this visit changed my perspective. Maybe it was being down there for over a week that gave me time to settle in and enjoy it more, or maybe it's because I've aged a bit, but I loved every minute of being down there. The way the city felt this time around was invigorating and inspiring. Now I anxiously await my next trip there for numerous reasons. Also the food. Sweet Jesus the food. I didn't get to really try out a lot of the cuisine in my previous visits, so this time around I made sure to. Nothing was disappointing.

      The Convention

RTX has changed a lot since my last visit. Everything felt bigger and busier and it was both exciting and jarring. To think that so much has come from Rooster Teeth is phenomenal, because you really feel like you're among kin when you're there. I got to attend a number of different panels hosted by a myriad of people, both official and from the community, and I think that is a strong testament to what this community has become. When you can attend panels hosted by people like you, it helps to shatter the metaphorical wall that exists between you and the people presenting content to you. Not only that, but there were a number of panels that showed Rooster Teeth still cares about its community and wants its input. I hope the community took something positive away from that.

      The Jeff Williams Concert

As soon as I heard Jeff was doing a show during this RTX, I knew I was going to have a good time. The concert at 2012 is one of my favorite memories from that event, so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see another concert. Getting to spend that concert with some of the people I was with for the 2012 one made it all the better. Jeff never disappoints in his performances, and I loved every moment of it.

      The Rooster Speak Party

Oh boy. So. Technically, this was my first time attending the Rooster Speak Meet Up event despite having been present in 2012. It's hard for me to put to words how proud I am of all of the people involved with that community. To have walked into a room with several dozen people, most that I knew or at least knew the name of, was a truly remarkable experience. Getting to meet so many people who I've gotten to know over the months on the server, seeing old familiar faces again, and meeting new people was absolutely outstanding. Hands down, that party was the highlight of my RT-related weekend.

      YOU

If at any point in this weekend I was introduced to you. If I met you for the first time. If it was our first time meeting in person. If it was just the briefest encounter. If it was my first time seeing you in four years. No matter the scenario or situation, you were what made RTX 2016 matter to me. In all of my life, I have never felt more at home than I did during this trip. Spending so much time with my friends, making new friends, just enjoying myself in good company was unforgettable. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't attend RTX for the convention; I attend for the people. Without you, I wouldn't have made the trip. I love you all so much and can't wait to do it again next year. Thank you all for being such amazingly wonderful people.

    • Let's Discuss the Community

      James NWETS

I've been a rather silent member of this community for about two and a half years. The number of journals I've posted and commented on has declined, and the number of groups I was active with has diminished. I say this to establish precedence; in the eight and a half years of my being here, the previous quarter has been substantially less active.

It's no secret that for a while, the Rooster Teeth community at large has been perceivably changing in ways that some of the more tenured folks would say is for the worse. Rapid expansion in regards to company outlook, projects, and overall presence has moved the company in a state of natural, albeit quickened, progression. The fact of the matter is, Rooster Teeth is not the same organization it was 5 years ago, or 10 years ago, or 13 years ago. The mistake we, as a community, have made is assuming it would stay the same. We found a home in a tight-knit community and believed it would stay that way so long as we did. That is no longer how things are, and it is not at the fault of Rooster Teeth; it is our own.

Rooster Teeth, as a company, has strived to keep promises made to us, and from my perspective, they have succeeded. For over thirteen years, they have delivered content to us that has been both good and bad. It has entertained, drawn criticism, made us happy, made us cry, and maintained a consistency that cannot be often matched by major content production corporations. They have continued to provide a website that, while faltering at times, is still here with the necessary means of keeping in contact and forming new connections with fellow users. This site has outlived some of the largest names in early 21st century Internet user-to-user networking history, and that is a very strong testament to its fortitude.

I will not lie to you and say it's been nothing but great success for 13 years, and this is from an outsider's perspective. Rooster Teeth has had to adjust from a company of less than two dozen people making videos in a second-floor studio to an internationally-recognized corporation responsible for almost two hundred employees in three established locations creating content on par with feature films and documentaries. This is not an easy transition. This is a move that requires major overhauling on literally every aspect of the organization's foundation. A constant throughout this, no matter how we perceive it, is the recognition of the community. Any other wildly successful group would recognize the blunt fact that they do not need their original community once they have amassed a following in the millions. The people they once catered to are now few and far between, and they have larger audiences to satisfy.

This is not something Rooster Teeth has done. They have not abandoned their community, despite the functionality of the website or the lowered level of responses from the administration to that community. They are still here, and we are still here, and so long as we both agree to be here, that is not something that will be destroyed. But let me put this as bluntly as possible: Rooster Teeth is not indebted to us. They do not need to dote on our every wish and demand. The community contributed to their foundation, and in turn, they have given us a place to call home. That is a mutually-beneficial relationship. That is what we have. The mere notion that we are owed a fully-functioning website devoted to making specific groups or forums work like they used to is a false-footed thought that shouldn't be entertained, because we are all adults capable of keeping in contact with the people we have connected with without having to rely on a single form of communication to maintain that connection.

The receding functionality of the website's core community aspects is not what might be causing the community to decay; it is us. It is our own unwillingness to nurture the community from the inside. It is our inability to adapt to a new environment alongside the company we have so dearly loved. We are the tree and Rooster Teeth is the one who planted the seed. That does not mean we should expect them to be the only one to water us after we've sprouted. A testament to this community is its ability to endure. If we are able to keep ourselves intact and host community events and meet with each other and love one another, we are able to transcend this imaginary requirement of a digital group or a digital forum, because those are not what make us a community. Those are tools we have used in the past to foster bonds and relationships, to create the families we belong to today, are not the only tools available to us. We are able to keep moving forward together.

If you believe in this community and in the people in it and in the people who helped create it, then you should know better than to attack Rooster Teeth and say they're the architects of our decline. Rooster Teeth gave you a place to find yourself among like-minded individuals. They shouldn't have to hold your hand and keep you from letting that place wither and die. There are community groups active and lively today and I am proud to be a member of one of them, because it is within these groups that the true definition of community shines. It is when the people band together and stay together that longevity is achieved. If we are truly the lifeblood of the community, it's time we acted like it and stuck together under a company who dared to ask us over a decade ago, "Do you ever wonder why we're here?"

It's time we recognized that a community is not defined by where they congregate or how they communicate; it's defined by who we are. We are Rooster Teeth.

    • It Took 13 Years...

      James NWETS

...and I only just realized that my brother and Rooster Teeth are the same age. I could've told you this company's age without a second thought at any point since I started watching Red vs. Blue, but I would consistently need to take a moment to think about how old my brother is.

Happy birthday, Rooster Teeth. Thanks for giving me a place to be a complete nutter among fellow nutters.

    • 4 Years of Hull

      James NWETS

Last Friday marked 4 years since I debuted the first story in what would eventually be called "Hull - Volume I." It was on this website that I cultivated a fanbase, and to this day, most of the people who continue to read my works are close friends of mine that I met here. If not for those people, "Hull" never would've become a series spanning two novels and a handful of standalone short stories, kickstarting my writing career and putting me where I am today.

Last Friday also marked the release of "Warsaw," a new story that will serve as the start of a new era in my writing universe. It brings the reader up to speed on what's happened in the Hulliverse since the events in Volumes I and II and also sets the precedent for what's to come. 2016 is going to be a wild year, and I hope you'll all join me again on this ride.

If you'd like, you can read "Warsaw" right now on Wattpad. I'm not pleased that they require people to make an account nowadays, and as such I'm looking for a new content publishing site for my future projects. I hope this won't deter you from taking a step back into the world I've been curating for almost half a decade now and experiencing what I pray will be a fun, adventurous, and entertaining contribution to the world of contemporary literature.

I finally got a full overview of my financial aid for this upcoming academic year. For the first time since my starting college, I will not have to pay anything out of pocket. You know what that means?

That latest episode of RvB was some damn fine stuff and the music was outstanding. I haven't been this excited for RvB in a long while.

I know the feeling. I've got a good dozen different ideas all fighting for prioritization. At this point I just go, "Which one of you is the most compelling story right now, and how applicable are you to what I've done thus far?" That tends to help me make a list of what to write and when.

      • kdoomed

Cool. I finished the first draft of the second book, without writing the first. I should graduate next year in linguistics. I have a lot of ideas for books, but they're all different genres. And no time to focus on them. One day.

I'm working on a large collection of mystery short stories right now. Wrapped up Volume I last November and I'm starting Volume II in a couple of weeks! School-wise, I took a year off to get my life in order, so when I go back, I'll have about two and a half years to go before getting a degree in sociology, concentration in crime and justice.

The Mass Effect universe is such a good place for The Doctor. He's off to stop a xenocidal race of alien robot organisms with the help of various companions, and he's nearly died once but came back looking different.

Is there anywhere I can get a PDF of all of the Hull stories? I am going on a trip and I would love to have an easy way to read them on the plane.

I can email them to you, if you'd like. Just private message me your email address and I'll send the fourteen released ones your way.

hey james, i saw the slender video and i loved it. But if you want a recording software I would recommend bandicam
the trial is the full bandicam but you can only record 10 minutes at a time and you have the bandicam logo at the top
so it is really good for a free recording software and it only costs $40 to buy.
Even ask @diaz_vito about it, he uses it too smiley0.gif

Unfortunately, no =[ My budget only allows for maybe one con a year, but I had a fantastic time, and I'm hoping to feed my inner nerd a bit more next year! I think it's about time I left the States for a little while anyways haha.
