      I just wanna run

I've inherited a bad back (let's call it lumbago) form both of my parents.

In an ironic twist, the thing that keeps it from flaring up is being active. Sitting too long screws me. I have to get up, stretch, walk, run to keep my lower back from staging a mutiny. I'm okay with that. I love sports. I love exercise. When things do go wrong though, activity only makes it worse. I'm relegated to gentle stretching and slow walking.

However, sometimes it just goes rogue for no particular reason. This time I can trace the cause to flipping my mattress. Yeah.

It's been almost a month since shit got shot to hell this time - by far the longest period of lower back pain I've ever had - and it's killing me.

I walk a ton, which is nice. I walked six miles and listened to two podcasts yesterday. But I had a dream last night about running and it was glorious. I've missed so much run club this summer cause I can't run. I've missed races with friends. I've just missed running.

Now that the marathon is over, I would like to do more triathlons. Not running makes me feel like I'm in this shitty exercise purgatory and unfortunately, until the back pain heals, running will only make it worse.

The Importance of Being On Time

Y'all, I'm about to get my rant on.

I am in charge of field trips for our museum. I've gotten our confirmation system down to a science. In multiple places I make it clear that you should plan to arrive 10 minutes early. For instance, if the program begins at 10:00 am, please arrive at 9:50 so we may check everyone in and start on time. I also ask that if your group is going to be late, you please call. Since that rarely ever happens I ask for a cell number as well as the number of the school so we can call when 15 minutes has gone by and you haven't arrived yet.

Our staff is small. We have to postpone regular tours while school groups are here. We, at best, get salty remarks from visitors about that. At worst we get hostility. When a group is late and wants us to simply push everything back, I get to tell the visitors that the tour we promised will be an hour after its original postponed time. It also means that the staff and volunteers don't get to eat any lunch or eat suuuuuper late.

I'm at the point where I am just not gonna push back group activities anymore. This morning the group was almost an hour late and had to leave at noon. They couldn't for the life of them understand why I couldn't fit two hours worth of activities into an hour and fifteen minutes. We had to drop an activity. I had to explain more than once that at the earliest we would be done at 12:30 even with three activities.

It's hard to wrangle kids. I understand. But that's something a teacher should know by now. When you've got kids any place that it takes 45 minutes to get to really takes an hour. It is not my fault that you are late. It's not my fault you didn't call.

The group also told us that at most they would have 60 kids. They promised to call to confirm numbers. They brought 72 kids and 10 adults. I would say maybe two of those adults were actively involved in keeping the kids on task.

I'm a museum educator, not a baby sitter. My current strategy is when your kids can't stop talking over me, I will stand their and smile blithely until they stop or you get out of lala land and make them stop. I stopped doing anything but this because more often than not, asking a class to be quiet resulted in a complaint from a teacher. I have to put on a Disney princess sing-songy voice if I want to tell a child to please not touch something for the tenth time because a mildly serious tone results in a complaint from a teacher.

Teachers who are active in keeping their kids on task are a god send. Public school, private school, home school (actually camps are the fucking worst to be truthful). What matters is the teacher and the other adults.

Kids are wiggly. We try to have tons of hands on activities so that they can be wiggly and still have fun and learn something. Each activity only lasts 30 minutes so we don't run out on attention spans. But if your kid can't be quiet long enough to listen to instructions we aren't even going to get to the activity. We like to help kids come to conclusions themselves. We encourage kids to think critically about history. If your kids can't raise their hand to talk or let another classmate talk without interrupting, how are they going to learn?

But if you won't discipline kids who are purposefully rude, you don't get to be mad at me when I do. I've done these activities a hundred times over. I don't need to churn butter. We can sit here for 30 minutes for all I care.

Look I get it, teachers work HARD. For poor compensation. I am largely sympathetic because I make less than the average teacher in my state. I work for the state too. I get it. But a field trip is not a teacher vacation. A field trip is not a chaperone vacation. It's not fair to check the fuck out and then heap the blame on me.

Have a conversation with your kids about proper behavior. Make sure the parents and guardians who volunteer to be charperones understand that they need to be helping with behavior. When the adults decide it's okay to stand in a group and talk over me during the tour, what message do you think that sends to kids? If the adults don't have to listen, why should they?

A good portion of the field trips I get are mostly pretty good. But there has been an upswing in instances where the group is late and I'm a babysitter. It sucks. When the kids are good, I get to see first hand how the work I do can long term impact a child's learning for good. When things are bad, I wonder if I'm failing in my educational mission.

      My Plan for RTX

Is to somehow wear R2-D2 stuff every single day, which will be hard because I don't actually own any R2-D2 stuff. But that's a minor obstacle, right? Also make @Steven wear a pineapple shirt.

While We Are on the Subject

Criticism of the site isn't "bitching." I almost didn't make that last journal because I was worried about it's content being dismissed as such because I wasn't being positive. I wouldn't be posting my criticisms if I didn't think that the site was worth the effort. I would have looked at the new site and gone "meh" and just returned to using other social media instead, like I've been doing for about three years now.

I would very much like the Rooster Teeth Site to be where I want to go to hang out with the Rooster Teeth Community. So when I write a journal that seems pretty reasonably asking for functionality back that would help me do that, I am hoping that it will be taken as constructive criticism and not unceremoniously swept into the whining category.

I'm Just Gonna Assume They Are Gonna Fix This

All I want is to not be notified every time someone I follow does something. Oh look @Dopp sneezed, good thing the RT site gave me a notification. @Newbs is taking a poop. Glad I didn't miss that.

I like the new site more than I dislike it. There. I said it. The design is clean. I knew there were going to be some bugs. I've only counted two people so far who have rage quit the site. But I'm gonna quote Professor Umbrage here and say that sometimes "progress for the sake of progress isn't progress at all." She said that right? Hermione was listening.

What I'm trying to say is there is some stuff where if it ain't broke, don't fix it. For instance, I don't watch all of my friends on here. I watch some people who aren't my friends. I liked the friends journals option because I could seriously just wade through and catch up with everyone's lives. That function seems to be gone for no reason.

I also feel like the dashboard isn't in the right place. [On a side note, I had to go hunting for it when I first got on the new site because it wasn't in a logical place.] Why isn't that a tab I can reach from my profile? The dashboard is people that I follow, I'm more interested in that than I am in comments and comments gets a tab. I mean does anyone actually leave comments anymore? If I wanna talk to someone about something, I message them.

Getting back to that first part, having an easily accessible dashboard makes getting a little notification every time someone you follow takes a poo really redundant. I'd rather just be able to scroll through my dash, as opposed to clicking on the notifications screen and then click again on each individual notification to get to a separate page. Fucking Tedious. "A user you follow posted a photo." Directly underneath "Dopp posted a photo." Thanks for telling me twice! JUST SHOW ME THE DAMN PHOTO AND STOP CLOGGING UP MY NOTIFICATIONS WITH REDUNDANCIES!

Real talk though, I almost missed that Grady had replied to my comment because it was buried in other things. Have I been getting notifications for the groups and forums I creep around in? Who the fuck knows. Apparently not because one group had to be restarted on Facebook "until the site gets fixed."

For me, these are not "bugs." These are design issues. Straight up issues with the way the new site was designed. I think they can be fixed though. I believe they can be fixed. I believe they will be fixed. I believe in a thing called love. Just listen to the rhythm of my heart.

Like I said, I mostly like the site. It's sad to say that the old site was so bad that I stopped using it as the primary method to communicate with my RT friends long, long ago. My hope and my wish for the new site is that the crew realized this and is putting forth all their effort to make it more community friendly.

      Fill Me In

This has been the theme of my life lately. I went off on the magical RV time travel road trip for two weeks, came up for air, and was promptly away again for my sister's wedding followed quickly by the Duke Doc Center "grown ass class for grown ass adults who wanna make docs."

APPARENTLY in that time all hell broke loose on here. I can't leave you people alone for a second.

People be moving around. RTX is gonna be in Australia. People be mad about that. Can someone please explain why you mad about that? What you made at, people?

I was able to book the time off for RTX today. To be very honest, for the past few months RTX was looking less and less like a possibility because of a work conflict. I had been quiet about it because saying it out loud would mean it was real that I wouldn't be going, and I didn't want to lose hope. Gotta say, it was worth it. I officially have the time booked off and now I am just counting down until August.

The Best Thing I did ALL Year

Was run a marathon with one of my very best friends @Newbs. When training was hard, he kept telling me that he believed in me. The best part of running the marathon itself was running it side by side (and a mile back at times) with him.

It's not just the marathon. Usually, Brandon is the person I know I can go to when stuff is hard. He listens and often is super great at vicariously disliking the sources of suck in my life.

He is also the person who thinks all my crazy, silly ideas are great. Brandon is up for shenanigans at all levels. The guy who is always down to kick my ass in Halo and raid in Destiny.

Brandon, you've been there for awesome fun amazing times but most importantly, you've been there for all the bad stuff too.

I'm glad I get to have you in my life and call you my friend. Happy Birthday smiley13.gif

Not sure how interested you are in watching a TV miniseries about the sons of liberty but apparently the History Channel has got one starting on Sunday. The first thing I noticed was how young some of the actors they've cast are. And much more good looking than I think the real people were by the way. www.history.com/shows/sons-of-liberty/cast
