For the past two years, GrifballHub has had a booth at RTX with free Grifball merchandise and Grifball gaming stations. Last year we had a massive 400 square foot booth with enough space for two full, 4v4 Grifball games going at all times!

We are once again running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for our booth. If you want a Grifball booth at RTX, check it out.

We could really use your help!

(This Kickstarter campaign is also endorsed by Jack!)

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your help!

Hey guys! I'm Kal, the co-owner of GrifballHub, the official Grifball fansite.

You might remember our booth on the showfloor last year, right next to the RT store. We gave away tons of Grifball swag, had Grifball gaming stations set up, and even had a life-size cutout of Grif!

We only got to RTX last year because of the generous donations of the Rooster Teeth and Halo communities. This year we are once again running a Kickstarter to raise funds for our booth.

Our initial goal of $4500 will allow us to have the same size booth as last year. If we blow past that mark, though, we will be able to have an even bigger booth with more Grifball stations and more swag!

If you're a fan of Grifball, Halo, or just wacky-and-awesome things dreamed up by the Rooster Teeth crew, please donate what you can to our Kickstarter.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for helping make RTX 2014 a smashing success!

This is the thread for sharing your ideas about the official AGLA Reach Map and Gametype. This is not the place to discuss what maps and gametypes are going to be featured in Grifball matchmaking.

We'd like to get as much feedback as possible--not only before the season begins, but also during the season, so that we can further tweak the map and gametype so that we have the best competitive Grifball experience possible

Okay, folks. First off, if you're wondering about SML09 Playoffs, the details are in this news post. The tiebreaker procedures are here.

The regular season is wrapping up, so it's time to start discussing what changes you would like to see to the rules for FL09.

Sign-ups for FL09 will open in just under a month. If you might be playing in Amateur next season, or if you are concerned with the well-being of the Amateur League, I would like to hear your feedback.

I don't anticipate many changes to the rules for FL09.

One rule I would like to propose is that forfeits are not allowed to be reported until after week 5 of the season. Some rookie teams are caught unaware that the season has started and might need to reschedule their games for the first week or two of the season. I think that unless you have the permission of an Admin, you should not be allowed to report a game as a forfeit until the makeup week.

Anything else on your mind? Neutral Host? New maps? Suggestions for forfeit factories? Tiebreakers? Rules for who gets placed in Amateur, who gets placed in Pro?

      Give me your feedback.

      Hello everyone.

Thanks again for voting for me as your head of the rules committee for the Amateur League. All in all, I think things ran pretty smoothly in the Spring League and only a few minor tweaks are going to be needed for the upcoming Summer League.

I will have a draft version of the SML09 rules for your review in a few days. Before I post that, however, I would like to get your preliminary feedback regarding what changes you guys would like to see.

Right now, the biggest changes I have on the to-do list are:

-Updating the tiebreaker procedure to include head-to-head goals per game and remove batting average.
-Inserting a rule about "walk-in" scores after the host has changed in a game.
      -Including the purpelchicken rule.

The new tiebreaker procedures would look something like this:

In the event of a tie when determining positions, playoff seeding, or wildcard berths between two teams within a division, the following tiebreaker procedures will be used in order:

      Head-to-head regular season record
      Head-to-head goals per game
Average team goals scored per game in common games
A one game playoff scheduled by the League
A coin toss (If a one game playoff cannot be scheduled)

In the event of a tie when determining playoff seeding between two teams from different divisions, the following tiebreaker procedures will be used in order:

Average team goals scored per game
A one game playoff scheduled by the League
A coin toss (If a one game playoff cannot be scheduled)

In the event of a tie when determining wild card berths between two teams from different divisions, the following tiebreaker procedures will be used in order:

Average team goals scored per game.
A one game playoff scheduled by the League
A coin toss (If a one game playoff cannot be scheduled)

The new walk-in rule will be something like this:

If the game connects to a new host, and gives an explicit message saying so, at any time before a team has scored five goals, the game is to be immediately halted. The teams are to then run a new network test. Once a smooth connection is established and agreed upon, the game is to be restarted. Any goals scored before a new host was established still count. Once a new game has begun, the teams are to walk in goals to make the score equal to what it was before the game established a new host. Once the score has been adjusted, the following round begins as normal. If a new host is established after the game-winning goal is scored, the game will only be replayed if it is formally disputed and the dispute is approved.

      Other things to consider:
-Neutral Host: Should it be mandatory for the last round(s) of the playoffs?
-Tiebreakers: Should any other tiebreaker procedures be included?
      -Any other points of interest?

Finally, in you are interested in being on the Rules Committee, send me a message on RT.

      Here's to another successful season!

    • GBSL09 Legacy/Rookie Rules Thread

in Forums > GBSL09 Legacy/Rookie Rules Thread | Follow this topic

This is the Official Discussion Thread for the GBSL09 Rookie/Legacy Rules.

As the new chair of the Rookie/Legacy rules committee, I have drawn up a draft version of the SL09 Rookie/Legacy rules and shared it with the heads of the league. Here are a few of the proposed changes and additions:

-Guests may play in the league and they are counted as one of the eight allowable players.

-The Network Test is now a requirement. It must be run before every official SL09 game and each captain must give verbal approval of the connection before the official game can commence. The Network Test game type may also be changed to three rounds so the sustainability of the connection during new rounds can be tested.

-Teams are given 15 minutes to show up for the scheduled game. This is an increase from the previous 10 minutes.

-Games must be played using the official GBSL09 game type and on the official GBSL09 court or a league-approved home court variant. Any game played using a different set of rules or on an unapproved court is void and must be replayed. Not replaying the game may result in a forfeit for the home team.

-Players and captains are no longer required to put film on their file shares unless there is a dispute. However, both captains are required to save the film of every game of the season to their Xbox 360.

-For the head-to-head tiebreaker, only the win/loss outcome will count.

-For the average goals scored per game tiebreaker, when deciding between two teams in the same division, only common games that both teams played will count. For example, if the #6 team in the division lost to one team 9-0 twice, and forfeited to the other team twice, games against the #6 team will not be included when determining the average team goals scored per game.

-If a new host is established before the game-winning goal is scored, the game is void and must be replayed. If a new host is established after the game-winning goal is scored, the game will only be replayed if it is disputed and the dispute is approved.

-"Don't be a douche" is codified with a list of unacceptable behavior (Stat padding, taunting the other team, not playing the game through all nine rounds, sending inappropriate or offensive messages to other players, and any unsportsmanlike activities that go against the rules or the spirit of the game). Also, administrators reserve the right to hand down any punishment they see fit as a result of inappropriate behavior. After the punishment is decided, the affected player is to be notified as soon as possible.

      And the biggie:

The rules for separating teams into the three leagues are as follows:
-Teams for the Elite League are recruited by the Elite League Admin, the Committees, and the Commissioner.

-All players who played at least two games, during the regular season and/or in the playoffs, in the Summer 08 or Winter 09 Legacy Leagues are "Legacy Players".

-All players who played at least two games, during the regular season and/or in the playoffs, on a team that won its division in the Winter 09 Rookie League are "Legacy Players".

-All players who played at least two games, during the regular season and/or in the playoffs, on a team that made it to the third round (Elite Eight) of the Winter 09 Rookie League playoffs are "Legacy Players".

-No team that has two or more Legacy players can sign up for the Spring 09 Rookie League.

-No team that has one or fewer Legacy players can sign up for the Spring 09 Legacy League.

This is the public comment thread for the new rules. These rules are not set in stone. We'd like to hear your opinions on the proposals and would also like to hear about any other matters you feel should be addressed in the rules. I've read discussions on a trade deadline/roster lock date, for example.

This is your chance to have your opinions heard.

its kinda sad to say this but myself even has to admit...

You have to be a great fucking team to win off host. SYLaL will forever be the best off host team to me. What we did off host was unheard of.

can someone point out to me a long time legacy team still in playoffs who has won off host so far these playoffs?

Like gof vs canadia.. we have host...wins
gof vs BO... we have host...wins
gof vs SI... they have host...loss
Si vs GBN... SI has host...win
GSH vs TWSS... TWSS has host... loss/dispute

Its sick for me personaly to think that i was sitting their going hmmmm how can we pull host, and if we dont would any line up really be able to play against host/ zegs connection...

Im trying to put together an off host team for next season. A productive one with new concepts of grifball and strategies to where we dont need host to win. If this doesnt work, well its a sad path to see grifball go down...

How much does having the hosting connection for a Grifball match affect the game? Both the one nine-round game and the sport as a whole?

I've long believed that the effects of "host" were exaggerated in online games like Halo 2 and Halo 3. It's a refuge for players who don't like to admit that that were tactically beaten by a better team, I believed. In some ways I still believe that. In a normal Halo 2 slayer match, for example, players had the option of not getting in a cross-map Battle Rifle battle against the host player with a longer BR shot. With a dozen different weapons on the map with varied geography, there are plenty of ways to negate the perceived host advantage.

And it's also a staple in online gaming that if you lose it's not your fault: The connection was laggy, the other team was cheating, etc. We've heard all the excuses and I've long felt that that's exactly what they were: Excuses.

However, Grifball is a simpler game. A boxed-in court with no cover and only two to three weapons to choose from. One player (or, for us splitscreeners, two players) with host has a noticeable advantage in one-on-one situations.

How much of an advantage is it, though? Could a game like Grunts of Fury's 9-0 loss to SI have gone the other way if a player from Grunts had had host?

Now we have players recruited to teams because of their internet connection. A decent tank with a killer connection can be more valuable to a team than an excellent tank with a lesser connection. Teams look to recruit players who can "pull host".

Maybe it's impossible to separate a tank's skill from their connection, as online Grifball is all we know.

I am in favor of best-of-three or best-of-five series for playoff matches to increase the chances that each team will get host, to create a level playing field. For the regular season, each team already plays every other team in their division twice, so each team may get host once.

Now, do you think that players exaggerate how much of an impact host has on a match? Do you think it's a problem for the league that players are sought for their internet connection, with their skill being a secondary concern? Is it just a minor part of the game that should be accepted and ignored?

Is there a way to minimize how host affects Grifball? Should we even care?

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Hey I saw you posting in the amateur thread saying how you are fine with both divisions having different game types and that if anyone had a reason why that shouldn't be the case to let you know. I figure posting here would be a much safer environment. Now I see the reasoning to give different game types, to please both divisions and try to make everyone happy, but if a team wins amateur playing dash I am just concerned they would rather stay playing dash in amateur another season than move up to pro for a different game type.

The reason this concerns me is for starters the whole point of the two divisions is to separate the experienced players from the new to the game ones so that both have a good environment to excel in. Having experienced, skilled teams in amateur playing against starter teams may intimidate some players who are of the weak of heart while also limiting the player pool for the pro league. We are trying to make the pro league more enticing with prizes of greater substance but all in all its my concern that having two completely different game types may be counter productive. Perhaps maybe a split for amateur between Dash and Vanilla? Game 1 against a team is Dash Game two Vanilla and then higher seed in playoffs picks or at least some way for vanilla to be played?

I'd like to take the time now to tell you that I am not going to be playing for WaMC next season. I could say it was only because we had a terrible record this season, or that I felt like i was the only good member on the team, but that isn't all of it. A major reason I am leaving is because of you. The way you treated the menz situation was simply terrible. You were calling for a man's head for a simple article he had written. This was a person that did everything he could to benefit the league, and because he did something that you thought was unacceptable for an admin, you asked for his resignation. Because of you and people like you, this community has lost it's best leader. I hope you are happy with this turn of events, but I hope you realize that you have caused a major setback for the Grifball community, simply because you and a few other people cannot take a joke. Menz was legitimately sorry for what he did, but that wasn't good enough for you. I'd like to think that I can get along with anybody, and I've been getting along with you ever since I started playing Grifball. I was even ok after you called out menz for simply voicing his opinion on a situation that was not started by him. No one will do as good of job as menz in any of his previous roles. I am going to vote for him next season to return to his job, as I am sure many other people will do. I am glad that people are leaving Grifball after this season. If they cannot take a joke, or if they get that easily offended, they don't belong here. In the irc menz made a joke about my girlfriend having a bulge in her pants, and even saved it as a quote. You know what I did? I laughed about it. Maybe you should try not taking things so seriously, especially the politics of an online videogame. Don't get me wrong, I care about Grifball more than you probably know, but I know when things are right, and when they are wrong. In helping get menz removed from his position, you have done something very wrong. If you want me to play the last game against GBK, I would love to. You guys are great teammates, but somethings cannot be overlooked, and your attitude in this situation is one of those things. I wish you and the rest of team the best of luck without me. I hope you will keep me on your RT and Xbox Live friends list, as other than this, I have no hard feelings against you.

As a note regarding both our "organizations:"

The "SI has too much power!" thing was always a joke, IMO, just like the "The Hub has too much power!" claim is now. Is it the Hub's fault (or SI's fault) that they have so many people who are so dedicated to Grifball and the community?

Yes, it is. Every season we have internal issues regarding how much power we hold on our team, and every season we consider having either me or Menze quit the team. While we might not think it matters because we came from different places into power, through different contacts, and because we disagree very frequently, it's not a good thing, and the logic holding it together is weak at best.

The HUB holds together as a "powerful" entity because the positions it holds are largely unrelated to control of the league as a whole. Bobby is as close as you get currently to a position of real league power, and he's not making the day to day decisions that an admin does. However, when something like this is brought up and the usually relatively powerless group of people become extremely powerful, and determine the fate of the largest current Grifball league, it's the group's responsibility to avoid their collective power and return it either to the person who is giving it (Caleb) or the people that elected them into their respective positions (the community), because they were never chosen for a task such as the one presented.

It's the responsibility of those in power to ensure that they are not overstepping their rightful bounds, even if it means breaking up a group or separating roles to the point that there is conglomerated effect of their opinions, and denying their power when put into a situation in which there is such an effect, or even the appearance of such an effect. Both our groups have to remember that.

I actually end up being a tank magnet because the best tanks on the opposing team always seem to focus on me. Plus I enjoy picking on Highlnd and Dragon. If you need a player let me know.

Sadly, my host pulling days are gone forever. On the upside though, my new college connection leeches off host pretty darn well smiley1.gif

Kal, please stop posting in the "Don't Do This" thread about my lack of "mental stability." I'm sure the confrontation between SuperGollum and I disturbed you, and my method of responding was less then acceptable to say the least. However, there are several, if not many, background stories and untold occurrences involved in the incident that most people, including yourself, on RT don't even know about.

I have openly admitted that I was wrong about the messages, and expressed regret for sending them, and while I do not hope to continue to play in the grifball league, I would still like to play with people in the league in custom and matchmaking games.

Also, even though it may have offended you, the situation really doesn't have anything to do with you, and the mods have made it too public as it is.

Hey Kal, OIW now has our starting line up and I would like to get some scrimmages under our belts as soon as possible. Do you think you guys would be free any time in the next week?

Hey Green Army/Head of League Rules guy.

This is SSgtHulka - from LFTO: Deconstruction. I enjoyed my first season in Grifball and look forward to the next one. I've been in discussion about a few things in the forum - and one discussion that has been going on has been about NH. My recent response was encouraged by another to forward it to you.

I've been doing some research in NH to see where it is mentioned in the Amateur League Rules and the guidelines for it. I find the lack of mention of it a bit disturbing. If NH is going to be used - it should be mentioned in the rules at Grifball.com with a link to the appropriate thread.

After thinking about NH for a couple of days now - I don't care which way it goes. There is the Network Test - and if either captain doesn't like the connection - then the game is played with a standard map and the Network Test run again.
Us rookies just didn't know enough about this - and it took me a bit to dig up some info on this. A mention and a link would be great and will reduce some confusion.

Thanks - and hope to meet you in the playoffs next season!

Not at all. Those kind of discussions are good for the league. It's cool.

While I agree with you on having purity in the Rookie League, Can you please don't include my team (USA) in the list of teams who intentionally signed up for Rookie league?

Cause, look what happened: People are saying we suck and calling us cowards for not signing up for legacy

Sector C-1, I agree with. They just changed their gamertags just so they would be Rookie

According to my captain, MooCow told us we would be Rookie. Trust me, I really wanted us to be legacy but we got put into Rookie.

      Good luck this season.

Although I personally disagree with your opinions, thank you for taking the time to make an actual argument in a well-thought out manner. Too many rookies come in and complain in a way that is impossible to read and comprehend what they are saying. What team are you on by the way, if you'd like you can add Leggo My Zeggo to your Friends List, and I can get you in some games with some of the better legacy people.
