    • The End of Free Play

      Mariel

So, if you didn’t already know, Free Play is over. While I could sit here and cry and laugh about all of my favorite memories, I really just wanted to write out a quick thank you.

To Patrick, who let me move into a hands-on producing role even though I’m just a baby and for supporting me and challenging me the whole way.

To Peyton, Shane, Joe, Michael, Mike, Nick, Nicklaus, Stab, Brian, Darren, Justin, Gavin, and anyone else who ever worked on Free Play, thank you so much for all of your hard work. We got to pull off so many ridiculous things because of you guys, and you’re the best crew.

To all of our special guests who came on the show, thank you for being a part of it. It was always a pleasure to share that time with you.

To Barbara, thanks for being so down to let me tie you up for a bit. You rock. Never change. Have a great summer.

To Ryan, who constantly made us laugh (and also cry) with his humor and ridiculous dad antics. To Tyler, my soulmate, my Jenga partner, and my best friend. Thank you for always being a broad, strong, handsome shoulder for me to let out my frustrations on.

To Meg, who will forever be the Regina George in my life (in the best way). I really can’t thank you enough for letting me work on Free Play. Every day with you presented a challenge and I’m honored that you trusted me enough to make it happen. You mean the world to me, and you are one of my greatest friends.

Finally, to you, our wonderful community, for supporting and loving a show that was pretty much all about having fun. You are my favorite part of working at this company. RTX was a dream, and meeting so many of you that loved our crazy show was so amazing. Thank you for being the best people in the world.

    • Love and Pride - A Follow Up

      Mariel

First of all, I just wanted to thank everyone for the immense outpouring of love and support you’ve given me over the past few hours. I spent all day checking my phone, reading your comments, and contemplating whether I should write something else to address other questions/concerns that have been brought up.

      So here goes.

To give you a bit of background on myself, I grew up on a farm in the West Texas area. My father is an avid and skilled hunter, and gun enthusiast. My dad taught me to shoot a gun at 10, the same age he started showing me how to drive. He’s taken my brothers hunting for years. The point is, I’ve grown up with guns my whole life. His collection ranges from vintage rifles to the newest pistols. Every time I go home to visit, I always ask if he can take me out to the gun range he has set up behind the farm. When I moved into my first apartment alone, my father bought me a gun. It was his Christmas present to me, and he also offered to pay for my CHL license. I was scared of his present. Not because it was a weapon, but because the realization hit that I was a young woman living alone, and the thought of someone coming into my place to hurt me was terrifying.

The gun control debate is one that I honestly do not feel comfortable speaking about. Mostly because I’m ignorant to the rules and regulations that are currently in place, and I’d like to truly do my research before I take a stance on such a controversial topic. But what I do know and understand is the confusion and sadness that happens when mass tragedies occur at the hands of a madman behind a gun. I don’t understand how someone who was investigated twice by the FBI is allowed to own weapons. Again, I can’t honestly say where I stand on this issue, but it’s something to think about, and I encourage anyone who reads this to do his or her own research.

My heart is heavy, and I will continue to mourn and speak up for those who longer have the voices to do so. I cannot remain silent and passive about this situation; it would go against who I am as a person. Things have to change. We all have to be an active part in changing the world for the better. How do we do that?

We communicate. We learn from each other, and we refuse to let fear and intolerance guide us. We stand up to the politicians who write ridiculously discriminating bills to keep our community out of using their preferred bathroom but offer their “thoughts and prayers” when tragedy strikes. We stand up to the bigots who blame people who are different for their problems. We cannot allow condolences only when it's convenient to a political agenda. We say, “We will not allow this. You do not speak for us.” We work every day to rid the world of Islamophobia, of homophobia, of racism. Of ignorance and hate of any kind.

I apologize for coming into a space of laughter, of comedy and enjoyment to speak about this. I completely understand that some of you find refuge here, that your days are made better here and that our content is where you come to escape. I am so incredibly proud to work for a company that provides entertainment. I don’t mean to bring controversy in a space like this, but please understand that my safe spaces have been compromised. I am a person. I have feelings. I exist, and I’ll no longer be able to enjoy a night out freely. I’ll always have the closest exit within eyesight.

I am incredibly grateful to work at Rooster Teeth. It is an inclusive place that makes me feel safe, welcome, and encourages me to be a part of an amazing community. We are encouraged to use the site, to communicate with all of you, and I plan on continuing to do so. Because I am a part of the Rooster Teeth community. I am a part of the Latino community. I am a part of the Queer community, and if speaking out helps even one person, then I’ll be able to sleep better at night. I love you all so much, and please know that I am with you and I stand by you through any struggles you may face.

I hope you can say the same for me and join me in a mission to spread love, acceptance, and peace. To say that we are here, we are united, we will not be silenced, and we will overcome.

Please continue the conversations and discussions. Whether you agree or disagree, it's important to be active and engaged, that's how change happens. Don't let this just be another tragedy that we brush over and move on from. Stay mad. Stay passionate. Stay hopeful.

      Mariel

Last night, I had the privilege of attending my first same sex wedding. Before the ceremony started, I could already feel tears starting to well up in my eyes. I’ll admit now that, that’s pretty normal for me. I’m a crier, I like to cry, and I pretty much cry at any thing. Need a stranger to cry at your wedding/social event/birthday? I’m your girl.

While the tears were there because of how big of a sap I am, they were also there because of the immense pride and happiness I felt for my two friends. The Supreme Court in the US ruled in favor of same sex marriage just under a year ago, a day that I celebrated, and you guessed it, cried during. So it was a dream come true to be in Texas, celebrating the LEGAL marriage of two handsome grooms. While at the wedding, I jokingly looked over at my girlfriend and said “I can dance with you here, and no one’s going to care!” Though I said it in jest, I meant it.

Fast forward a few hours and multiple alcoholic beverages, we find ourselves in a nightclub, known for its dancing, eclectic crowd, and themed nights. Barbarella is my favorite club in Austin. It’s been a safe haven for me for years; I used to attend the TuezGayz night in college like it was my religion. Why? Because it was comfortable. Because I was able to surround myself with friends, with people like me, who just wanted to drink and dance in a space that felt safe. Of course, I had a great time, had way too much to drink, and by the end of the night, was headed out hand-in-hand with my hiccupping girlfriend to get home.

This morning, I woke up groggy, red-eyed, hung over as hell to the news that 50 people were murdered in a club like the one I had been at just a few hours before. 50 brothers and sisters of the community, slaughtered in a space meant for them. Meant for fun. Meant to enjoy. And I haven’t stopped crying since. My heart is broken, I’m enraged, and I can’t make sense of the tragedy.

My girlfriend and I are affectionate towards each other. We love each other, and we try and show it in our actions and the way we treat one another. Often in public, she’ll reach out for my hand, I’ll squeeze hers, and then let go. Typically, she’ll look at me, ask if I just don’t want to hold her hand, and I’ll respond with a smile, another squeeze, and I’ll let go to keep walking.

What I haven’t told her is that I’m terrified to hold her hand in public. I’m afraid of someone giving us a bad look. I’m afraid of someone saying something to us. I’m afraid of someone trying to hurt us. I’m afraid of someone wanting to kill us. I’m afraid of someone seeing us and going off on a rampage to kill people like us.

I feel comfortable holding her hand in private, or in a dark movie theater, or at a nightclub. But never in public. I’m going to try my best to overcome that fear today. I want to be able to live my life as authentically and as proud as possible. I don’t want to live in fear just because of being myself. I refuse to let ignorance, intolerance, and hate dictate the way I live my life.

To wrap this all up, I hope one day we can change the narrative. I hope it comes soon, and I hope we don’t continue to let ourselves become numb to the tragedies that are occurring way too fucking often. I don’t believe there’s any reason for a human to personally own an automatic assault rifle when the only purpose of such a weapon is to rip into the flesh of 50 people without reloading twice. If that’s your hobby, find a fucking new one.

Love one another, learn from each other, and try your best to do away with any prejudices and intolerance you hold in your heart, because the world will be a better place if you do.

First of all, holy shit you guys. When I first thought about doing this, I figured I'd have a few contributions. I'm overwhelmed in the best way on how many songs have been added to this playlist! I love the huge mix of different genres/tastes and.... well who knows if I'll ever get through it. But I'll try! I know many of you have had concerns about the size, and so I'm all for finding a solution. I don't want to regulate too much, but maybe we do a clean swipe every month, and keep a 10-limit song per person? Not that I'll actually go through and delete anyone who posts more than that, but just something to keep in mind so we can keep it manageable!

If there is a swipe every month, that's plenty of time to skim through it, favorite what songs you like, then have a new month to find something new. All for suggestions though, so if you have any, leave me a comment! I read all of them.

SO, for this week, my playlist is dedicated to the all knowing, Father John Misty. I slept on FJM's music for WAY too long, and have been playing catch-up now that I've been enlightened by all that he has to offer. I've been obsessed with his album I Love You, Honeybear and have been listening to it non-stop every chance I get. Don't get me wrong, his first album Fear Fun is equally amazing, but there's just something about the grandiose sappiness of his second album that really speaks to me (Super cheesy, I know). Probably because behind this dark, black heart exterior, I'm a hopeless romantic just like Josh Tillman seems to be.

I could go more into detail about all the feelings this album makes me feel... but I don't feel like embarrassing myself and also don't want to bore you all with the longest post ever.

I do however, want to hear all the sappy love songs that get you guys all up in your feelings. So, drop them below!

Hooray to my first post! It's about time I start using the site for things other than work...

Anyway, I've been thinking about different ways of getting more involved with the community, and I figure music is a great way to connect with people... right?

So, I'd love to start sharing music with you guys! I've decided the best way to do this is to have two playlists. One, where I add music I'm currently listening to, and another collaborative playlist so you all can drop what you're currently listening to, and I can listen to it!

I've been thinking about this for a while now, and saw so many great acts during SXSW that it just fueled my music sharing fire that much more. My curated playlists will hopefully be updated... weekly? Biweekly? I'll get a feel for it and see how it goes, maybe more often if you guys want it!

As far as the music that I'll be putting on playlists goes, I'm into all different types of genres, so expect certain genres/themes to be featured from time to time. I grew up listening to pretty much everything under the sun because of my older brothers. I had a desperate need to fit in with them, and music was one of the ways we connected, and we still all share tunes every now and then.

This first playlist is very pop-centric, and has a few artists that I was fortunate to see during SXSW. I'll be posting track list here as well, for any non-spotify users.

**For collab playlist, feel free to post any kind of music you want! Don't feel like you need stick with the genre that mine is!**

      Miike Snow - Genghis Khan
      Chairlift - Show U Off

      Kill J - You're Good But I'm Better

Carly (The Queen) Slay Jepsen - Warm Blood (please note EMOTION was the best pop album of 2015)
      Wet - Body

Jack Garratt - Breathe Life (One of the best live performers I've ever seen)

      Purity Ring - bodyache

Milk & Bone - Pressure - Chateau Marmont Remix

Louis The Child, K. Flay - It's Strange

      Made in Heights - Pirouette
      Hey Mami - Sylvan Esso

      Demon - Shamir

      I Insist - Von Sell

If you leave a song on the collab playlist, please comment below and let me know! Also, feel free to let me know what you think of these jams.

TL;DR - Send me your music, people.
