      Raptor_Alpha

In my tradition of yearly postings (do not want to overwhelm the massive following I have)...this is to let you know that I am alive.

If you follow me on FaceBook then you already know about my "big event" for the home.

Over a year in production....we now have an in ground swimming pool. There is a waterfall, there is a custom spa, there are tanning shelves.....there are torches and a firepit.

Water could not be added to it until August 18, 2014. We could not heat it until September 18,2014. Maybe not a big deal if you live in sunny California but we live in Snowy Connecticut.....so it gets cooler around that time before fall.

Do we love it? Of course we do. Was it stressful? It was the MOST STRESSFUL PROJECT I have ever been involved with. More so than new home construction or basement refinishing. Are you invited to swim in 2015? Sure....hit me with a message, we'll work something out.

Also this year....we celebrated 20 years of being married. At times it feels like time has flown by and at times....yeah, 20 years seems about right. Luckily Paula doesn't read this so I could basically say anything that I want. However, some of you may tattle on me via FB so....I'll leave it at that. :-)

I have an Xbox One and PS4 now and my playing time is basically split between the consoles.

The latest COD game....I'm on the fence which platform to purchase for.

      So...anything else? Hmmm....Not really.

I know I won't be here to regularly check up on things but I will respond to all comments and such. Life is busy and time is precious.....I know this is true for everyone. So, don't take it the wrong way....I'm still interested in you.

      See you later.

    • The "once a year" posting....

      Raptor_Alpha

I'm impressed that I still remember my password to this site. smiley0.gif

I really don't recognize this site anymore. It's like going back to a house you grew up in....and things are different enough were you don't feel like you belong but at the same time...trigger memories of the "good times". I guess the good times are stronger for me.

We're getting a whole house generator for the house. We've been putting it off for years and finally took the plunge this year. Should be scheduled in mid-June. A little 20,000KW should do the trick.

Then, POOL TIME.....another thing we've put off for years. (Speaking of which....10 years in the "new" home come July....man that time flew by). We don't plan on using the pool this year....but it should be built by year end.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Xbox One? My Xbox360 is stil going fine.....I probably won't switch anything until a truly "must have" game comes out and support for the 360 starts to slip. Same goes for the Sony PS4. Still have the Wii and have no desire to upgrade to WiiU.

Oh, saw Star Trek: Into Darkness last night....second time for me....but in IMAX 3D this time and I must say.....the IMAX part did help make the movie more enjoyable. I guess I won't write off 3D automatically anymore.

OK......well let me go look at what you folks have been doing. I'm sure I'll leave a few comments for you.

      Have a good week.

Greetings and salutations. I'll save the usual "Geez guys I haven't posted anything in a while."....... 'cause you know that already.

So what DON'T you know? Well, finishing up some home improvement stuff. Don't get me wrong.....I'm not the one doing the improvement work. We want it done correctly so we pay someone. smiley0.gif Due to the water damage we had in the winter (via ice damming) we had to replace the flooring in two of the guest bedrooms.

We decided to replace the carpeting and put in wood flooring (as 80% of the house was already that way.) Well, we thought it would be odd to have two out of the three guest rooms have wood....so we opted to get the third down as well. And...as the flow of money happens.....one you start.....might as well keep going. So, might was well do our MBR and closets. That's were it is now.....three guest rooms finished and MBR is about 90% done.

We've been living out of a guest bedroom....boy, does it make you appreciate the larger MBR.

So besides home improvements what else is new?....well, if you followed me on FaceBook you would know everything. LOL

I finally agreed to replace my aging Apple PowerMac PowerPC Dual G5 tower with a new machine. An Apple iMac 27" CORE i7 with a SSD bootdrive and a 1TB secondary drive. This is the FASTEST machine I've ever used. I credit that to the SSD as well as the CORE i7. I had a teeny weeny 20" monitor and now this 27" looks enormous.

Well, with the extra storage and faster processing I've been able to import some photos/videos that have been waiting for quite a bit. So, here are two trailers I whipped up.

    • TRON: Legacy out on Bluray today

      Raptor_Alpha

Well as you may know I am a fan of the "original Tron"....not that the movie was GREAT but rather for what it was in its time.....the first time CGI met up on "the big screen". Yes, I was a kid when it came out. My memories are perhaps distorted but having seeing it prior to watching Legacy that came out in December 2010....it still was entertaining.

Anyway, I enjoyed the special effects and soundtrack for TRON:Legacy and knew that I had to get that in my home. I picked up this cool looking edition. Any Bluray case that has batteries is high on the GEEK factor. The Identity disc glows blue when you press the button.
      020411_tron_legacy_limited_edition_blu_r

I don't have a Bluray 3D TV (I know....I bet you're surprised lol) but I do have two Bluray players that can play back 3D....so this edition will playback just fine for me. When I get to the point when we need a new TV....I'll look into the 3D thing.

This set includes the Bluray editions of Legacy in both 3D and 2D, the original in Bluray, a normal DVD and a digital copy. I haven't played them yet....so not sure how the "extras" are.

I'll let you know about that....as well as my impressions of the iPad 2 I picked up March 12.

    • London Calling....

      Raptor_Alpha

Wow...I've been gone here a while. Kind of odd to post something not knowing if anyone will be reading this. Heck....it hasn't stopped me before. If you really miss me....you can find me on Facebook. I think you can find anyone on FaceBook...I even think there is an APP for that. :-)

So rather than catch you up to what I"ve been up to for months....let me start with this month.

Paula had a business trip to the UK a few weeks ago and I fly out to meet her over the weekend. Met up with a bunch of her family and had a "jolly good time"

So I flew from New York JFK and landed in London, Heathrow late AM on the 18th of March. (I'm including dates as there will be a quiz later on)

While I have traveled to many foreign countries before....I have never done solo before (well I flew into Canada 15 years ago on a business conference...but Canada isn't "that" foreign lol). Also, I have never hailed a taxi or took a subway in a major city before by myself. I know....I can hear the "you poor dear" cries of sympathy.

Granted it wasn't like I had to read Greek to use the automated ticket machines but I was proud that I figured out how to buy the CORRECT ticket to use for my journey through London. Of course I had my iPad 2 (yeah....got that one from the New York store on the 12th of April....that's another journal posting for another day) which I loaded with a few London "tube" mapping programs which turned out quite handy. As one would expect while visiting London...it was raining. So, that made getting a cab a bit of a challenge but here again....I triumphed.

So I met up with Paula's cousin on the Friday. We grabbed a pint at a local pub "The Cock and Bull" or whatever it was called. Swung on back to his place and Paula arrived later in the afternoon. We had a good night out for dinner and then left the following morning for Chelmsford to meet up with another one of Paula's cousins.

On the train ride over (free wi-fi on the train by the way) we passed the construction of the London Olympic Stadium. We might try to get tickets to the opening ceremonies....but the lottery started the day I landed, chances are all they are sold out.

Anyway, we had a good weekend of meeting various family members who drove in to see us. I left with a "living souvenir" ...a cold! Yep, go figure I got sick just before we flew back. Paula was fine (and never caught what I managed to pick up).

So now some photos to relieve your eyes from reading.

A sign at the Admiral's club at London Heathrow airport. Thank goodness it was posted....I would have never known.

    • The spoon

      Raptor_Alpha

A lesson on how consultants can make a difference in an organization.

Last week, we took some friends to a new restaurant, 'Steve's Place,' and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket.

It seemed a little strange. When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket.

Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I inquired, 'Why the spoon?'

'Well, 'he explained, 'the restaurant's owner hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour.

If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.'

As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare. 'I'll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now...' I was impressed.

I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter's fly.

Looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, 'Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?'

'Oh, certainly!' Then he lowered his voice. 'Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the restroom.

By tying this string to the tip of our you-know-what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%.
      '

I asked quietly, 'After you get it out, how do you put it back?'

'Well,' he whispered, 'I don't know about the others, but I use the spoon.'

As far as your unused vacation days.....besides the one you'll need to take off buying my Christmas presents...take Fri,Sat &Sun to visit me. CT is close to NYC and who doesn't want to see New York all lit up for the holidays?

While I would definitely love, love, to do that, my funds are exceptionally low all of a sudden thanks to my car, student loans, and other sporadic spending. I'm under $400 until Wednesday when I'll be back over $1,000. If I can get that other job next year where I'll be making $45 K, a pretty good amount in Nebraska especially considering my situation (only having myself to worry about), I can do fun things.

I'm easy to shop for. I'll PM my shipping Adress to you.

As far as a razor goes....Phillips Body Groom, cause I know you need it.

Heck yeah...It's starting to get cold. I'm trying to grow as much hair as possible to stay warm.

Oh, and thanks...I forgot to add that part.

    • sphinxter

Hmm...That's a fair point...A point definitely in favor of "new job" because my buddy is able to work from home when he absolutely needs to. Sometimes, it's even required of him. Of course, the new job would also require a huge increase in difficulty. The current I could literally do in my sleep and could have done it since I was like fifteen. The increase in difficult would be just about infinite from what I know he does while the increase in pay would only be double.

I know at their heart, none of them would fault me for taking a job that offers twice as much money because like I said, very few people would even contemplate it in the first place. I would feel bad even bringing it up though because my boss even asked me in my interview how long I thought I would be here. She seemed to think I was a flight risk. Not in the, "I'm just going to stop showing up" type of way, but exactly in the type of way I would be leaving. She and I both knew that I was overqualified for the job. The only thing I lacked was any actual job experience apart from working at a baseball stadium. I assured her I'm someone who gets comfortable easily and was just looking for a job to help pay for things at the moment. So, I would feel bad since it could be seen as me "lying."

Either way, I have some time to figure it out. Even my "worst case scenario" isn't horrible. If I would get the internship and then get fired after the six months, I would still make $20+ K in those six months. So, I would still make in six months what I would make in a year now. So, I would theoretically have a six month cushion to work with.

Holy crap...I'm actually well aware of him. The Indians were said to be in on him for a while. That's actually pretty cool. I of course have to hope he fails for the first six seasons of his career or so since he'll be playing for Boston. After that, I hope he does well...Unless he goes to the Yankees...

      In reply to Raptor_Alpha, #7:

There is a watch battery replacement booth at the closest mall to me....$2 to change the batter plus the cost of the battery. We save up our watches.....and drop them off in one shot. Some of them have crazy tools required for opening them....I would welcome tiny screws but none of ours are that way. A few Fossil watches of mine have three batteries (of course....different sizes each) that need to be changed.

It didn't really happen quickly. It has been that way for a long time. I've always been one to "fall" for chicks quickly and have believed in things like "the one." I just happened to also enjoy running through chicks like I felt it was my own personal duty to sleep with as many women before I die. I did read something rather intriguing though that seems to be true. Guys are generally more romantic than females. Most guys believe in things like "love at first sight," "the one," and generally fall for chicks quickly. Chicks on the other hand are more reserved and generally think most guys who approach them are up to no good. Of course, there are examples of genders that display the opposite traits, but from what I've witnessed, what I said holds true. Also, as Fever Pitch would point out, I have a very romantic soul. I'm able to believe in invest myself in something completely that I have no control. In the movie, that was the Boston Red Sox. Obviously for me, it's the Cleveland Indians.

Yeah, it's pretty much gone. It did get bad for a while. If I wasn't 200, 210 pounds, I would have been shocked. I'm down to 185 now and that's actually low. Once I regain more of my muscle, that will be pushed back closer to 195. I just stopped eating as much. I ate until I was "satisfied" as opposed until I was "full." I'm still doing that. I "pig out" every once in a while, but I keep it under control for the most part.

That was a long-ass comment. AWESOME THOUGH. Yeah psychology is a huge fascination of mine. It's either that or law as well. I almost considered a double major. But then I thought that would be a bit much.

I will always stick with music. It's something I quite enjoy. Whether signed or not. I've already been offered a few deals. The latest one just a couple days ago where the owner of the website (weshopsongs.com). He gave me some stocks and said create an original song using however many of the stocks I wanted and send it in. I didn't bother cause that offer is given to like everyone and the chances of being chosen are pinned against that many other peoples. Then another offer was from a label who signed a user I met on Garagebang.com (now closed) who said they wanted to add lyrics to my techno remix of Jingle Bells then release it giving me royalties. That never went down.

Now I am just chilling. Enjoy the casual flow of it as a hobby. If someone comes along with a serious deal, then obviously I will say yes. But it needs to be a real offer. These other emails and online messages aren't shit to me.

I will always use it as a hobby. smiley1.gif

You are not the first person who has said that about my writing. Every teacher or professor I have ever written for has said the same thing. I've always received high marks for my writing. Even the first real writing test I was giving in sixth grade showed that. I forgot the assignment, but everyone in Nebraska public schools had to take it. I was one of the few sixth grades statewide to receive the highest mark possible. I thought it was awesome at the time because we had to actually tell some sort of life story which was then sent to the capital to be read by people who have never met me to ensure "fairness" in grading. There was one professor though that always wrote that my papers seemed to "talkative." Even then though, he gave me good grades.

That's what saddens me. Pretty soon, I will have to get a "real" job. That will definitely cut into my video game playing time. I don't know if I will be able to continue playing thirty plus games a year. I probably will be able to if I decide to drop reading and give up on ever finding a wife.

I did enjoy whatever Burnout game I rented in the past.

I actually do eventually use the brakes. The key is to be sneaky about it. Don't throw me a course that absolutely requires using breaks until I've invested some time into the game.

Also, this isn't to say that I always have my finger on the gas pedal button. The way I usually do it is slow down ever so slightly by releasing the gas pedal if I feel like I have to make a turn that can't be made at full speed or by crashing into the side of the rail/building/whatever and using that to help my turn.

    • sphinxter

I disagree. That would make it work even better in my opinion. Especially if he sounds like a Rasputin.

I suck at racing games. So, I hate them. I did enjoy the Need for Speed series since those aren't direct simulations. I did enjoy GT3 too when I had it on the PS2. I definitely poured hours upon hours into that one. In general though, they aren't my thing. Mostly because I don't like using the breaks. So, the more arcadey it is or the more I can make it so breaking isn't needed as much, the more I enjoy it.

Haha, that's a good one. It isn't quite like that though. It comes to a satisfactory conclusion and solving of the mystery. It was clever. I was happy with it. Then, in the process of us getting to "celebrate" it, he apparently decided to just stick us with a big "eff you" the past 320 pages you read were ultimately irrelevant since I'm going to pretty much erase everything that happened by leaving everyone more or less in the same place life wise as where they started.

That would be the greatest ending to a game ever and would of course then make it the greatest game ever. Make it happen now.

Meh, I usually only make fun of those that really, really deserve it. Those that butcher the English language and then try to still sound smart while doing it. If he had made logical point, I wouldn't have been bothered by the bad grammar and punctuation. I'm not one who can really rip on someone for bad grammar or punctuation alone since I mess up a few times every now and then. It happens. Clearly though, that guy had zero intentions of being logical and didn't care about grammar in the first place.

I wouldn't use any of those special controllers either because I wouldn't want them getting worn out. Which is actually the main reason why I want a new controller. The new one doesn't have bumps on it. I don't think they can get worn out...at least noticeably like having the bumps gone.

They are better than other controllers battle damage wise. I remember every Playstation controller doesn't hold up well to battle damage. Thankfully, controllers are wireless now. I remember almost breaking my PS2 due to the controller being wired...I probably shouldn't ever play Kinect. I think that's one controller I wouldn't want to damage.

I'm going to be knighted some day just so I can officially be called that.

Hmmm...I should warn you the first Assassin's Creed is boring and bland...gameplay wise. I loved it when I first played it, but I was blinded by the story. Once AC2 came out and I played through that, it made me realize just how bad the gameplay aspect was in AC1. I mean, it has it's fun parts, but it gets far too repetitive. If you can find a legit way of getting the story of one, I'd do that and jump straight to two. Although, playing through one would make playing through two and then Brotherhood more enjoyable since you will see the dramatic improvements they made. Then again, the main draw to the series is the story itself. The gameplay improvement was just icing on the cake.

I'm always down for some Brotherhood multiplayer. It's a nice change of pace from Halo since it requires more strategery and outsmarting your opponents.

    • sphinxter

I agree that it should be sold without the charge kit. I know I don't need one. I only have three controllers right now though since I gave one to my brother long ago. One is a charged one that apparently doesn't work unless plugged in now. One is a black one that I sort of broke. It still works, but the pieces are separated a bit at the bottom which makes holding it a little uncomfortable. The right joystick also has the covering coming off of it on the bottom of it. I have no clue how that happened. The other I thought was perfect, but then I needed to use the left bumper and remembered it was broken. So, I took the battery case out of that one and switched it with the plug and play one. So, everything is fine for now, but the bumps on the joystick are completely gone. Plus, I like the silver and don't need the color of the buttons at all since I never look at them. I'll still see yellow and press "y" instinctively anyway.

It's the same price as the normal wireless controller play and charge kit.

Yea, I'll have Dance Central as well as my mom and sister were the ones that pushed to get the kinect. We've been meaning to use the wii more as it has just collected a bunch of dust.

Responding to your thoughts on windows Phone, I feel ya, to be honest I don't plan on ever owning a Windows Phone for my personal phone. The only reason I went with this track was that the guy that talked to my class about Imagine Cup mentioned the possibility of getting one for dev which I'm waiting to hear back on about. In time it might be worthwhile but given the size of Apple and Androids markets, it will take a bit to have the Windows marketplace competitive to those.

Cool, I'm looking forward to trying it out, I'm sure I won't really use it's navigation features that much, but it'll be neat to play with for a bit.

Fair enough, but you're missing out on my second favorite video game story ever behind the Mass Effect story. That could change depending on the outcomes of ME3 and AC3 though. It does give a bit of background on AC2 before the start of the game though. I'd still look up the story and get acquainted with it though.

Well, first, I completely suck at the multi-player. So, I have no room to argue. Second, if we get at least eight people, skill level won't matter because we will have our own room. We can make sure everyone gets a fair share of the action to level up. Cheap? Yes, of course it is. However, it has the same problem as the CoD games. It doesn't have a matchmaking system that actually puts people of similar skill level together like Halo does. It's hard to get better when you keep getting placed with people that are way ahead of you level wise.

Haha, wow...Well done. I'll forgive you for being away for so long now.

      Every real man prefers scotch.

The problem is that Fox holds the rights to most of the auto racing. So, ESPN won't get much of it. However, all the 360 has to do now is create a way to feed me, bathe me, and help me go to the bathroom and I'll never have to leave my couch.

I won't even think about getting a Kinect until I A) know that it works like it's supposed to and B) has a game I actually want to play.

Yeah, I didn't mind it too much once I thought about it. It originally was supposed to take five to ten minutes. Instead, it took about two minutes once it finally started. I think they did that just to get the basic stuff and then made another update needed for those who wanted to use other features. That was probably smart. That way, those that just want to jump into games can do that without having to wait for additional loads for things they didn't want. A download all option would have been nice too though.

I didn't know that was possible. I don't mess around enough with my avatar to really care though. Maybe I will if a Kinect game ever becomes a "must play."

I think Ive just reached a stage in my life where I no longer feel the urge or desire to play video games. But Ive NEVER enjoyed the Halo Multiplayer Experience anyway, so it really doesnt bother me.

Also, my xbox still overheats within a couple minutes of turning it on so there wouldnt be much chance of playing a game

Mr. Raptor_Alpha, this is Michiko, the sometimes-guest around this site, ha ha! I just saw this "Star Wars" site that my friend sent to me, and I HAD to let you know (being the bonafide "Star Wars" Nerd Elite that I know, ha ha ha)! Here's the breakdown from the site:

Hello! You and 472 other people have the chance to recreate Star Wars: A New Hope. Below is the entire movie split up into 15 second clips. Click on one of the scenes to claim it, film it, and upload it. You can have up to three scenes! When we're all done, we'll stitch it all together and watch the magic happen.

So if you're still doing video production stuff, YOU NEED TO GET IN ON THIS!!

I hope everything's well for you, despite never being in contact. Take care, and good luck with all that you are doing, mm! AND let me know if you do a scene for that, I'd love to see it!! =D

      Best,
      Michiko ^_^ Y

I didn't see you on last night (although, I didn't see you FR until I almost logged off haha). I didn't start playing til a little later. No worries though. I've been playing every day since the release, and I don't plan on giving that up anytime soon smiley1.gif

Sounds like a plan! We'll also build a Death Star that doesn't have a "BLOW ME UP HERE!" spot on it.

Have fun with the beta tonight. I know I'll be playing some tonight, but I -really- need to start working on my computer *sigh* If you see me on, maybe we can play a game or 2 (Even though I absolutely suck at Halo, so prepare to lose haha. Littleharf is my tag, incase you don't know it).

If you let your WoW account go dormant you do not lose your character progress. In fact there is a feature for getting a friend back into the game and renewing their account that lets you get a month free. I think it takes so little space for them to keep your toon's information that it doesn't make sense for them to delete it so you will come back for expansions. The majority of MMO's work this way.

Mint does not work with my bank. It is a fantastic product, so I'm glad you brought it up. My bank has some very robust features when it comes to budgeting, and I use Quicken to get a snap shot of our entire net worth.
