      Registration

So I registered for fall semester classes today and this is what I got:
      - Corporations (boring but required)
      - Income Tax (boring but useful)
      - EU Law (I'm really interested in this one)
      - Nuclear Weapons in International Law

Not too bad, and I don't have any class on Fridays, which is nice. In other news, the job is going okay. Not super exciting, but not super boring either.

      Also, Happy Birthday Bey:

      I HAS JOB!

First off, the woman at Homeland Security completely hosed me. She cancelled our scheduled interview at the last minute and said that she'd call me back to reschedule. But she didn't call me back. So I finally managed to get in touch with her via email through a very roundabout way (she did not leave me either her direct phone number or her email address) and I got a form response saying that they had already filled the position. Nice.

BUT I got a call this morning from a place that I applied to a few days ago. Apparently they had already filled their positions, but someone dropped out at the last minute, so they offered me an interview. I went in this afternoon and they offered me the job. It doesn't pay, but it should give me a lot of really great experience.

So you know that job that I interviewed for that I really wanted? Yeah, I totally didn't get it. Awesome.

    • Teflon23

      Hey

I'm still alive. I'm also done with my first year of law school, which is pretty awesome. Should find out my grades and if I got on any journals over the next couple weeks.

Now I just need a summer job. The one that I really want hasn't gotten back to me with a decision yet (I already went in for an interview) but I'm really qualified, so I really hope I get it. I should also have an interview with US Customs sometime soon - it was supposed to be last week, but it got rescheduled. Doesn't really matter what I do, I just need to get some work experience that I can put on my resume. Basically, it just has to look like I didn't spend all summer sitting on my ass. Even though I might want to.

      What I SHOULD do:
      - Clean the apartment
      - Send out more summer job applications
      - Do reading for class on Monday
      - Read Con Law study guide, since the class is insanely confusing
      - Fix my taxes

      What I'm GOING to do:
      - Play random flash games
      - Drink coffee
      - Watch college basketball

He can stop you from renewing the lease next year though. But he can't just stop your lease just because something changed and he doesn't like it, since he didn't provide for it in the lease. He can't try to enforce a condition that isn't even in the contract.

It goes further than that here, he can't even put that condition in a contract, it's the legal equivalent of putting in a No Black People clause in the lease, family status is a protected group under the Charter, and doing it now because because Mandy's pregnant is considered sexual discrimination, there's even a notation about pregnancy on the form the SHRC sent us.

Larry and the other guys really REALLY wanted to keep them and not throw them to the crowd during the contest. Truth be told, I wanted to hold on to one myself and I'm thinking of buying a couple more just to have around. They're really fucking fun to just play with.

So you're saying that your principles are for sale and you're willing to take bribes.

I'm saying I'm willing to settle out of court if he's willing to cover my expenses and kick in something for our trouble in exchange for our not suing his wrinkly ass off.

Also, you can see the dice a little here. Luke actually wasn't exaggerating.

The way they framed it was, "Well, you certainly wouldn't want to be moving in January with a new baby, now would you?", and because the baby's not born yet, applying the No Kids rule before the fact trips the sexual discrimination tripwire, rather than the family status one.

Legally, they haven't got a leg to stand on, there's no way they can kick us out, and if they decide to jack up the rent on our next lease, I've got three years worth of leases from the old apartment that demonstrate how they never increase their rates by more than $40/month per year. In three leases with my old unit, I went from $560/month to $640, there's no way they could crank up our rent next fall without it looking like they're trying to force us out of the unit through financial pressure.

Now, if they're really set on this whole No Kids thing, and are willing to fork out a little cash to keep things from going to the SHRC, we'd be willing to move if they were to provide for our moving expenses, plus a month or two worth of rent for the new place, on top of our damage deposit. The stress and headache of finding a new comparable apartment in this city's housing market, and moving a pregnant woman twice in a matter of a few months, has got to be worth a month's pay, imo.

According to the dude from the SHRC, I personally couldn't file a complaint, because I'm not a parent yet, but Mandy could because the whole "When are you planning on moving out of our Adults Only building?" thing came up in response to us mentioning in passing that she's pregnant. If they made an issue of it after the baby was born, then I'd have grounds personally to file a complaint because of the family status protections in our Charter.

As for the hiring a lawyer thing, the SHRC takes the case and pursues it, then prosecutes on our behalf, so it costs us nothing when we file a complaint in good faith.
