Luke just opened up a script contest for Balls 2 That. The winning script gets drawn.

Go vote for mine by pos-modding it, please? Thank you.

Folks of the Forum will come out as scheduled tonight, at 12:00 AM PST.

    • Avatar Requests, Revamped

      TheRecreator

Well, my avatar request journal far exceeded my expectations for it. What was originally intended for some members of the LFTO thread to meander to has caught the attention of many people outside of our group. While I would love to be able to them all, the time I have available is finite.

It is in this spirit that I would like to propose several solutions:

      1) The other LFTO admins and I have been discussing the idea of holding group contests once a week. The winner would get a custom avatar done by me post-haste.
      2) People submit a standardized application for an avatar, and I create avatars from that pool as is required for my comic. The idea would be that when I need to illustrate a particular user or I need a certain look for the next comic, I could access the request applications to do so. When the comic goes live, I will send the "Recreated" users a .png file for their image.
      3) I outsource the work to a number of "ghost illustrators". Using Inkscape (a freeware vector illustration program), they can throw together the basic avatar while I provide the final tweaks. Any interested parties can request a vector template for their desired pic.

So, what do you guys think? Once I've gotten some more feedback on these proposed solutions, I'll be creating a second avatar request journal to better outline what I have in mind.

Oy… this was one ambitious comic. It's amazing how long that motorcycle took to design, let alone the base itself. I was planning on including some sheep and guards littered around the place, but I ran out of time.

I also wasted some time adding alt text to these comics. Over time, I'll be updating the entire archive with them, so check back at the Folks of the Forum archive site occasionally.

I think most creative writers can agree with me that it is a pain when audiences think a character doesn't actually know something you could easily explain away as something told to them off-screen or off-panel. This comic is dedicated to all those writers.

(And before you all complain about panel #2 and #3, Miss Price and Buckeye are looking over their shoulders. I'll make the art more clear next time. smiley6.gif )

I believe no introduction is necessary for Luke. Seeing as I've been busy all weekend with Comic-Con (and realized I would be in advance), I asked Luke if he could fill in for me - I knew he reads my comics, after all. I never even expected a reply - imagine my surprise when I got a message from him in the inbox, asking for pics to base his drawings off of!

Without gushing on for too much, it's an honor to have Folks of the Forum drawn "properly". Much thanks to Luke; he didn't have to do this - he gets paid for his comics.

Short day today for us. We left the convention early because it was far too crowded to even move through the aisles.

I asked a few follow-up questions for Burnie today, got my answers. The stuff I asked is technical stuff only hardcore LFTO members would care about, stuff about the position of Reconstruction in the RvB universe (it's ill-defined, by the way - about six months after the Great War ended).

We also attended the Webcomics Bootcamp panel with the authors of the book "How to Make a Webcomic". After that, I asked Scott Kurtz some questions about whether or not my art style (rather, Rich Burlew's art style) is acceptable for merchandising. He told me that it's way too early to think about merch, and that I should focus instead on making and improving my comic. I guess he implied that my current style is fine, though he also said that my brother's start-up artwork is a certain improvement over (mere) stick figures. smiley6.gif

Other than that, there's not much to report. Burnie might have a special audio gift for LFTO, and I bought a high-quality V mask. We left early so we could eat a very excellent dinner with our mom, and so that I could get all my ducks in a row with tonight's comic update. Stay tuned…

P.S.: I also suggested to Gabe and Tycho that they prepare Cardboard Tube Samurai costumes for retail… with the costume itself shipped in a the cardboard tube. After considering the savings on shipping, Tycho told me "there is much wisdom in your words". I can't tell if he was being honest or just patronizing me, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

As for photos, I'll do a batch upload after the convention.

Second day at the Con, also one of the most productive. I managed to get an interview with Burnie about Rooster Teeth, Red vs. Blue, and telling the story. Should be good to listen to - once Burnie sends me the sound file, that is.

Not much else happened today that I can remember in enough detail to report. I bought some Stargate coasters, a Yu-Gi-Oh! Gold Series 2009 pack (got the exact card I wanted, too), and the other two Dr. McNinja trade paperbacks. My brother whined the whole way and was prepared to call the day a waste… until he found a Naruto costume he wanted.

I also attended two panels: one on developing comic art, and one on entertainment centered around video games. Burnie was there, but this guy with a lisp took center stage in that one. I took notes… I'll post them later.

Now to go pester Burnie for those sound files. :-P

Addendum: I also remember force marching my brother through the vendor aisles to find him some Stargate patches for his outfit. He complained that we were never going to find them there… we found them towards the very furthest aisles away from the action.

(56k warning on all clickable thumbnails)

Well, my legs feel like they're about to fall off, but I suppose it was worth it. I spent most of the day gathering my high-priority loot before it all sold out: the Penny Arcade Cardboard Tube Samurai figure (a regular one and a rare "blank" one for my brother), the Halo Grifball figure, and signatures from as many of the Rooster Teeth staff as I could get. So far at this year's con, I've met Gus, Geoff, Yomary, and Joel (they also had a couple guys in the background this afternoon, but I couldn't recognize them). Alas, they did not have the Rooster Teeth polo there, only the Grifball one. Shabobble says they're CC-exclusive, so I might pick one up anyways.

Today was also an interesting day for fan gifts. I delivered my Order of the Stick renditions of Gabe and Tycho to… well, Gabe and Tycho. The gift was well received, I believe. I also gave the same style of gift to the Rooster Teeth staff members I met, and was equally humored. Gus also got a ridiculous awesome hat today. A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything. smiley8.gif

      th_Gus_hat.jpg

I also got the chance to witness some very interesting cosplay today. There was Dr. McNinja, some girl dressed as Edgeworth from Phoenix Wright (complete with a sign that said "Objection!"), and YouTube. Yes, I saw YouTube cosplay at Comic-Con. I don't mean YouTube internet personalities (lonelygirl15, Star Wars Kid, etc.), I mean the site itself. Seeing is believing.

      th_Website_cosplay.jpg

I was also present at the world premiere of Halo Legends. It looked awesome, but my brother was unimpressed - apparently, he thinks East meets West doesn't work well. The panel eventually degenerated into the Japanese panelists gushing on about how they discovered Halo and such, so we left early. I'm still looking forward to the whole thing, though I still hope that RvB Animated makes it out the gate first.

Things on the agenda for tomorrow: arrange an interview with Burnie (since he's the go-to guy for story and all), ask the Penny Arcade guys what to do about my brother's blank CTS figure falling apart at the joints, and buy the rest of the Dr. McNinja trade paperbacks. Expect another update for tomorrow!

Your bid for more poll votes got you a lot of fan mail, huh?

It was an easy (if time consuming) thing to do. Got me about 20 mod points and some very funny responses :)

One guy got totally trolled. He thought I actually used some kind of merge system to spam. He said 'epic fail', I said "It didn't work? Well Well Well..", he said "No, you totally fooked up", I said "Er... you DO know that it's a joke, right, and that Roosterteeth would never allow users to access another person's database info, that <<option:: whatever>> is a bunch of complete arse" etc.

      Alrighty, lemme tackle this list.
      1) Not particularly. The only difference is status. The "veteran" teams, who have been around for a least one season are in the Legacy league. The "newbie" teams are in the rookie league. So I guess you could say more experience, "better" teams are in the Legacy league, but it isn't definite, since elite players from multiple teams can make a new one and end up in the rookie league.
      2) Including the captain, you can have a total of 8 players.
      3) No. 3-4 players must participate in every match, no more, and no less. So, you are SUPPOSED to play 4, but if you can't, you can play 1 man down. so this leaves 4 starters, and 4 backups, if some don't show up for the games.
      4) No. One team. So if we did get enough players for a LFTO team, I'd pass on my leadership of Asian Platypus and create a New team.
      5) As far as I know, yes, there have been prizes (Like the Recon armor permutation), but it is not definite.
      6) the grifball.com site was scheduled to be integrated into Rooster Teeth on February 12th, but I think it is running just a bit late. We will see it soon, though.

Well, if you ever have time to actually talk on xbox live, I went ahead and sent your GT a friend request, and I can tell you all about the league.
