I got it into my head that I might want to apply for a job at Rooster Teeth over the summer. I scrolled down to the bottom of the page so that I might access the site FAQ and find the answers to questions that people frequently post on staff members' profiles.

Turns out that the new profile's watch feed automatically loads another dozen or so posts whenever you hit the bottom of the page. Hm.

Edit: Oh wait, the FAQ is still accessible from the nav bar at the top of the page. Derp. smiley4.gif

My Multimedia Systems professor is talking about how Apple saved the industry by introducing digital distribution of audio with DRM - apparently, the AAC format is both a superior audio encryption format and more DRM-friendly.

I wonder when he's gonna mention that all iTunes Store music is DRM-free now. smiley6.gif

So yeah. Remember how I said I gained employment at a game design company? Well, the game we made is out now, so I can finally talk about it. smiley0.gif

      71hv1AVl-TL._AA1445_.jpg

The game's Twister Mania, a Kinect game available for purchase at retail. I was a design intern primarily responsible for the "Slalom" and "Break it Down" sections of the game. If you find yourself dodging traffic and struggling to hit that one last hexagon in the corner, you probably have me to thank (or, more likely, blame).

There's also a number of other modes: a bunch of shape-matching stuff, a Tetris/Jenga-esque gravity puzzle where you have to remove blocks one by one from the bottom of a tower, and a mode much like that gameshow "Human Tetris" (go Google that to find some videos) where you have to shove yourself through a wall (I did a few of those shapes too). If you enter multiplayer, there's also a sort of silhouette HORSE game. I haven't tried that one out myself, but it seems to be pretty good for parties - especially ones with lots of booze.

In my opinion, this title is one of the more effective ones for object tracking. Instead of opting for precision gestures, Twister Mania instead focuses on your silhouette for gameplay. This reduces a large part of that "I didn't mean to do that, you stupid game!" element that you might see in other Kinect titles (speaking from experience).

Retail price is $50, but you should be able to find it for cheaper if you're interested. I don't see a single cent from the sales of this game, but if people like it, then it boosts my credentials, so... smiley8.gif

    • Video Game Soundtracks

      TheRecreator

Some of you may know that I have a rather esoteric taste in music. If one were to look through my music collection, one would be hard-pressed to find anything with lyrics, let alone a pop piece of any sort. I think a large part of it is that I'm just unable to parse both the lyrics and enjoy the melody/harmony/rhythm of the music at the same time, and given my lifestyle, it's rare that those lyrics mean anything to me anyway.

So instead, to soothe my craving for audio delights, I turn to soundtracks. Video game soundtracks make up the vast majority of my album collection, but I also have a good deal of music from movies and TV series. I even own a classical album or two, though a few of those are technically soundtracks as well.

A lot of people may think that I've greatly limited my horizons with such a decision to focus so narrowly on a single genre. I disagree, not so much because I don't think I'm limited, but rather because it seems improper to define "Soundtrack" as a genre unto itself. Okami's soundtrack features classic Japanese instrumentation. VVVVVV is exclusively scored by chiptunes. BrĂ¼tal Legend got its own original rock score to accompany the selection of notable rock pieces that formed its backbone. I don't own all these soundtracks (I tend to favor music with an orchestral bent), but I appreciate each and every one of them.

There's also something to be said about music that's designed to enhance other media. A composer's job is a job done right when the listener pays the music no notice. The music isn't meant to dominate the experience; it's meant to enhance it. To set the tone. Soundtracks and orchestral pieces aren't about communicating a message, they're about conveying emotions.

With that in mind, I present to you two albums I discovered over the past few days:

The first is the Bastion soundtrack. If I had to describe it, I'd say it's a blend of western and techno music, kinda like Firefly meets Starcraft. Without having played the game itself beyond the demo (so far), I get the sense of an odyssey of desperation, intrigue, and a hope to build a better tomorrow. By the time you read this link, all the audio CDs available will probably be sold out, but I somehow doubt that a first-time listener would want to make such a purchase anyway. It's just worth highlighting that the game came out in the summer and that they started with 1000 copies available for sale.

The second is the "The Greatest Video Game Music" album recently performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. These are the guys who performed the Star Wars soundtrack, and here they've done an orchestral rearrangement of some of the most iconic themes in gaming history. If I were to try to show an outsider to nerd culture that gaming music can be beautiful, then this would most likely be the album I use. They've taken some of my own personal favorites and scored them too - songs that I would recommend even outside of their inclusion in such an album.

And now I've said my piece. I don't think anything in particular brought this on - I'm relatively comfortable with my musical taste - but these are thoughts I've wanted to articulate for quite a while.

Some of you guys may remember me talking about my MacBook Pro and how it was getting on in age. This is related to that power adapter I mentioned in my previous journal. Its power systems have been on the brink of failure for months, and while it's just as powerful as the day I bought it, my computer can't quite keep up with the level of multitasking I like to demand of it.

Well, today my computer finally buckled under the pressure. The monitor won't turn on when I boot up with the computer. I've tried all the things Apple's support site recommends, but none worked.

I'll be taking it in tomorrow to get it repaired, but I've already ordered one of 'dem fancy Intel i7 quad-core MacBook Pros.

My loyal MacBook Pro (I never named you, did I?), you've served me well. I'll see to it that you are properly fixed up so that you may remain in service whenever some ancient application demands something from a bygone age. smiley1.gif

P.S.: Browser incompatibility sucks. Why do all my school-related websites only work on Internet Explorer and all my leisure-related sites completely flounder on it?

I've heard that there are a few types of pikachu you can get through different events including surfing pikachu (depicted as riding a surfboard) and flying pikachu (depicted as riding on a hang-glider) but pikachus in the main games can't actually learn those moves, but for some reason they can learn strength. This seems strange to me, what with them basically being electric yellow chinchillas.

Actually, if it hadn't been for the hotel cost I would have only been $100 short, but with the hotel cost that left me $250 short instead.
I tried selling my DvDs to raise money but pawn shops are barely paying for them these days. I was offered $25 for 100 DvDs. That was just ridiculous.

I got your message about Friday Night Forge (for a while on Skype I could receive messages but not send them, which was extremely frustrating).

Obviously I can't be there, but I would really appreciate it if you played my map (Sky Manor).
You're probably better off not using the custom gametype that I suggested (Mash Up) because it's designed for large, open maps, so it'll be completely imbalanced in a small, enclosed map.

People are welcome to send me any feedback over here.

      Thanks!

Oh, and I don't know if you've blocked journal alerts, but I left a long, detailed feedback comment in your 'Molly Ninja' journal.

All of that would be incredibly helpful... If I knew that LiveJournal accepted CSS. I'm doing a somewhat stupid thing and using LiveJournal as my website hosting so to speak, so I'm limited to what their input field will accept as far as coding. I will see if it likes CSS, but from what I recall from trial and error, it doesn't.

Um. So. What are some good, free website hosting services? smiley0.gif

Hey Rec, sorry for not being able to be there at the playtest.

If you don't want to test my map that's fine, but If you do thank you very much! I'm mainly looking for comments/constructive criticism about the layout, the weapon placements, the spawns etc. and to see if there are any things that I need to fix or stop. Thanks!

Oh, and I initially said to use the 'mash up' gametype (which I use for all of my maps) if you do use it you may want to warn people that the jet pack class is utterly useless in that map.

EDIT: people are welcome to leave comments on my RT page or anywhere else (that's reasonable), so long as they tell me!
