      Oh look, ART

Here, everyone. Have my senior thesis project, the source of much pain and suffering over the last 12 weeks or so. This and two detail images are currently on display at the FSU Museum of Fine Art in large format prints that turned out beautifully - this one is a 30"x40" print. I am happy. This means I get to graduate and stuff. Now I just need to survive opening reception for the grad show this Friday...

Sculpted, textured, and rendered in ZBrush 4R5. Composite and image editing done in Photoshop CS6. Clicky to see it all big and stuff.

      So...

I thought I'd pop in and say hi.

What have I been up to, you ask? (Or not. That's cool too.)

      Well...

My thesis work. I graduate this semester. Oddly, I've become a 3D digital artist, which I never really saw coming. Who knew.

I've taken on an internship at an arts and technology research institute and gotten involved in 3D printing. I've helped build one of the six largest 3D printers in the world. I design print builds and other fun stuff like that, when I'm not doing other glamorous things like cleaning my boss's office or curbstomping plywood.

I've played a hell of a lot of Mass Effect.

I've not slept a lot. (Refer to the thesis work comment above.)

I've married Sasha. Easily the best move of my life.

So, denziens of RT, what have you been up to?

    • Ubergirl

Okay, so. I've finally gotten back on this art thing, since life has allowed me a breather. Today, we have a speedpainting of possibly my favorite video game villain, Saren Arterius from Mass Effect. This is one of Sash's roleplaying characters, so...yeah, we're dorks.

Anyway, has. About 3-ish hours worth of work.

      SarenDesat.jpg

Also, have a picture of what I wore today. I look like I'm about to kill someone, but at least I'd do it in style.

Hope everyone's enjoying their week! smiley12.gif

      Sigh.

Might have to wait a day or two for the next bit of artwork, folks. Life intervened hard. Nothing terrible, just obscenely busy. Managed to do a bit today but it's not worth showing yet. I'll get there.

Day one: But I'm a Geth sympathizer...

Yeah, you heard my rants about the Quarians. So how the fuck did I end up with a Quarian character?

Anyway, yes. Yara'Zeena, no surname or ship affiliation, as she abandoned her pilgrimage and slipped underground. Can usually be found on Omega picking locks and pockets, and trying to evade various merc gangs. That is, when she's not drinking herself into oblivion. I have a lot of characters that do that.

This is way, WAY rough. About 30 minutes total worth of work, mostly with me bitching at the references. It's also a little late, but I had a long and busy day today. Kind of surprised I got anything done.

      Anyway, has and enjoy.

      YaraZeena.jpg

    • Ubergirl

      Okay, LET'S DO THIS

I have been seriously art-avoidant for the past few months. Considering the chaos that is my life, this might be understandable, but it's really beginning to eat at me. Things I would very much like to do are being left undone. So, I need a kick in the pants - something to get me back in the practice of doing art regularly so I can kind of feel normal again. Well, as normal as I can get.

As such, I am embarking on a Character-a-Day spree, starting tomorrow.

I roleplay, because I am a dork. A DORK, I tell you. I have a gazillion characters (okay, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration) and a few spare personas, most of which I have never done art of. As such, I shall portray each and every one of them as they exist in my wee little brain. Some are from existing universes, others are from universes of my own creation, and a handful are alter-egos. But hey, I figure people might like to see them. Or not. So I'm going to spend the next...um...however long getting them all out, at least as rough sketches or speed paintings. I can't promise they'll all be spectacular, but we'll see how this goes. I might even add some of Sasha's characters into the mix, if he wants me to. (And he does, I know he does.)

At present count, there are sixteen drawings to do. If I add Sasha's list of characters to the list, I'll be drawing one every day for the next ten years. smiley7.gif

ETA: We're counting Sash at 28 characters, at me at 21, as I had forgotten a few. Whoa.

Well, so far I've been... sort of.. reverse drawing. I make really thick lines in paint, then go back and edge out what I don't want to be there to get the final line. It works pretty well for me, oddly. I think you saw one of the pictures I did that way... roosterteeth.com/members/images/image.php?id=3128494

The charcoal thing sounds perfect, though. I'll do that.

      • MissZahrah

        smiley12.gif

Yeah, I vaguely - very vaguely - recall charcoal pencils from high school art. I never did too well, only took one semester of it, was too busy doing drafting. heh. But I've always wanted to be an artist. I've always wanted to get more on paper than just words.

I think I told you already that you really inspired me with your comment about not working on a white background, and a friend of mine's stories got me all needing to be artsy so I started drawing the characters in paint and found I was actually liking the results, so now I want to expand and see if I really can be any good at this.

Thanks for the tips and I'll be sure to come running to you, no doubt. smiley1.gif

      • Ubergirl

        I love that drawing. smiley12.gif

Do what works for you, and experiment a lot. A lot of artists get stuck in safe zones because, well, doing new things is scary and failures happen. Try to avoid seeing all the flaws and learn to love your work, even if it's a failed experiment (says the queen of abusive self-criticism, who is currently hating on her Meta painting).

Have fun with your art. smiley0.gif

Also, charcoal will allow you to do all sorts of reverse drawing. Get vine charcoal and a kneadable eraser, completely cover a sheet of paper in charcoal, and erase away to your heart's content. Those kneadable erasers also conveniently double as stress balls. Knead knead knead KNEAD KNEAD KNEAD

Let me know if I can help you out at all. smiley12.gif

I've seen that before, and it absolutely tickles me. That's an amazing project for both the children and the artist involved.

    • DocRossim

Sorry for going off on one the other day, I've been stressed lately, but that's no excuse and I apologise.

I do draw from photos when I can, especially when drawing something I'm not used to, but they're not always ideal and I also want to improve my general knowledge of anatomy and the movement of the body to help me draw -- both from photos and from memory/imagination, especially for more complex scenes. Essentially I want to round off my skill-set rather than relying only on photos.

The book you suggested looks like it might be helpful for just that -- learning more about anatomical structure, I see it has sections on bones and muscle form, that may be useful, so thank you for suggesting that, I shall look for it.

Always looking for fun groups to play with (that aren't entirely out of my league). That's my problem, actually; a huge majority of my FL are people that 1) are WAAY better than I am, which means that when I play with them, I'm playing against people who are WAAAY better than I am, and I get destroyed, and 2) often take things a little too seriously.

As someone that has been a Sci Fi glutton for about 30 years, I LOVE any hypothetical or intellectual conversation about said subject. I am pretty sure I can connect just about any "new" Sci Fi concept to something that has been done. HOWEVER, that being said, I tend to agree with you that it was an obvious reference. I guess being a "Sci Fi Geek" I automatically categorized RvB as Sci Fi. I never really even considered the whole pop culture side of it. Well played ma'am, well played. Thank you for showing me a new approach to my line of thought.

speaking of pacing- I am half-ready for a big reveal like the 'CHURCH IS THE ALPHA" one they pulled back when. I just feel that the suspense is kind of building in that direction.

    • niriall THE META

I guess you're right. Monty does different stuff and his physics DOES need work. I was just pointing out it was not the worst and had really good moments.

Yeah the animation is kind of killing the sitting and talking parts. I am beginning to suspect that while this way takes less time the last season's mix would actually be better in the long run story-wise. Everyone has been waiting for another Monty-vision fight and ignoring the Blood Gulch stuff when thinking of how important stuff is. The machinima is there for a reason, we just arent entirely there yet. I truly do hope it picks up...

    • niriall THE META

A few things not all of them. I do see where he borrows.
Thing is he is getting better and does better than either one of us are doing. I do like his physics on occasion where it is funnier that way and THAT is the point more than being realistic. I don't know...

Did you like the BG portion today, by the way?

    • niriall THE META

Its still a different approach though.

I was wondering about the Matrix scene.
Tell me what you think it is because I think I may be thinking of something else.

Also about Monty- he has made 3 never-before-seen-anywhere kicks in his Dead Fantasy series, and I think he said he was working on one with Tex. People who would know have checked- and he worked for a video game company working with character designs based on how people fight.
You can see it come through During the Ice Fight scene where they all have subtly (or in Wash's case strongly) different fighting styles. I can only say that it will be amazing when we see the fight scene in episode 10 with not two or three but FOUR distinct styles going on.

Wow, you've got some real talent. Very impressive portfolio you're building. Great use of color and I especially liked your versions of Sangheili and Agent Maine. I always like seeing how others see one of the RvB characters without their helmets. I always pictured Maine pretty scarred up, maybe with a few battle wounds that hadn't quite healed. Or perhaps with some technology he'd grafted onto himself (herself?) poking through the skin maybe. Like he'd be the RvB equivilent to someone who'd had a few too many piercings.

Anyway, rambling over. You're extremely talented and I enjoyed your portfolio. Can't wait to see what's next for you. smiley0.gif
