      Summertime Fun

You know, as silly as it sounds, I never thought I would have to give up my weekend for work. Classes and work already rule my weekdays and work is creeping into the weekend, by this time next year we're going to be opening everyday (I'm not being negative, it's a matter of time since the business in which I work was bought out). And we only get 3 holidays a year.

I'm just a little bummed though, I miss having time. It's like the older we get the less hours in a day there at, until we're too old to do the things we want to do.

I'm going to be off on my birthday though, so I've got that going for me. Which is nice.

I can't wait until the end of June

I've been so stressed lately I'm hoping not to go crazy (or at the very least be a productive kind of crazy)

It'll be my time to relax for a moment.

      No More Wisdom Teeth!

Not gonna lie. It feels good. Mostly because I don't get those wisdom teeth pains anymore.

The procedure itself was not painful at all, I couldn't feel a thing, but I'm going to guess it looked very painful. The dentist said, "Agh. . . Sorry about this." each time he stick the comically large needle that looked like something out of the Victorian era, with it's large needle, big container, and two large finger-holes at the top. THANKFULLY all I felt was something like that feeling when you bite the inside of your cheek, except on my gums.

When the anesthetic started taking effect I absolutely could not feel my jaw. I wasn't even sure if I was biting my tongue or not.

In case anyone is wondering, or afraid of going under with their wisdom teeth removal, I was conscious for the whole thing (but it WAS painless).

After the procedure all I wanted was tea. but my driver took me home instead :( The recovery was pretty sucky.

Day 1: Day after the removal my jaw was very swollen. Had to focus to form words that make the mouth close and open (those using B, F, P, ect) , could barley open my jaw, and could only eat beans. Can't eat chips because the crunching and chewing hurt. But the bleeding had already stopped, mostly. Rinse with saltwater 3 times a day. Thank goodness for painkillers.

Day 2: Still swollen but not as much, still can only eat beans and other soft foods. Better at forming complex words but still hurts to open jaw. Rinse with saltwater 3 times a day. Thank goodness for painkillers.

Day 3: Just laid in bed all day, felt pretty horrible. Yay for oatmeal! Can open my jaw a little more but it still hurts to chew. Rinse with saltwater 3 times a day. Thank goodness for painkillers.

Day 5: Swelling is finally gone. Can eat more foods and some meat (barbacoa!), can open my jaw all the way but there's discomfort, still can't chew. Thank goodness for painkillers.

Day 7: I can talk normally and my jaw isn't swollen anymore, I can eat most foods but not something that gives lots of resistance, check up says the stiches have dissolved but the tooth holes will take 2-5 months to completely close, but I can rinse with mouthwash instead of salt water. Weaning myself off painkillers (but thank goodness because they help so much).

Day 14: Mostly back to normal, can eat chips with some resistance, and don't need any painkillers. I still find myself feeling where the teeth used to be.

Notes: Had all 4 wisdom teeth removed at once. Still need to rinse everyday to prevent stuck foods from staying in the holes while they close (sort of afraid to eat spicy because I'm scared it will get stuck in there). Chips were the last thing I was able to eat but I hardly eat those anyways.

Overall experience: 6/10 would not do for fun but it was worth it.

      I Need a Toothfairy

These wisdom teeth are coming in with a vengeance. I checked in the mirror and I CAN SEE THEMâ—â— All four are ripping their way out.

      I gotta reschedule an appointment.

I'll update with a post-removal post when I can. If you still have your wisdom teeth, I recommend getting them taken out when the doc recommends instead of waiting or you'll be praying to the toothfairy too.

      How Old Are You Mentally?

Recently I was thinking about a friend and thought, "Wow, this person is already 22. I can't even believe it." Then I realized Wait, I'M 22!!

Completely forgot how old I was, thinking I had just turned 20 when I'm approaching 22 ½.

How old are you before you realize you aren't?

      PSA: Be Kind, Rewind

Remember everyone, just because you CAN do something illegal or dishonorable doesn't mean you should.

I know you've been thinking about it, (yes, I do mean you,) and it's ok and normal to have these thoughts. What's important is that you continue to resist and work against them because they only have a hold on you and take up mental space for as long as you think about giving in.

But I know you're better than that.

And for everyone else, rewind your VHS tapes; I know you forgot to rewind them.

I Had a Dentist that Told Jokes

While I was in and out of consciousness he made jokes about how many boyfriends his assistant Yolanda had, who giggled and blushed at every other joke.

The dentist was an older man, gray mustache, and almost no hair on his head. He joked about how he couldn't let me take any of the nitrous oxide home and if I was rooting for the San Antonio Spurs to win the championship as he was, although that was mostly because he liked to watch the Silver Dancers at the halftime show.

The last time I went to the dentist though the woman at the front desk said that he retired and I was sent to a new dentist. He wasn't nearly as old. He was maybe in his 30's and I think he was Danish.

I'm pretty sure that guy's a sadist. He was not gentle as he poked and scraped at my gums, I jerked and tensed every time he took his instruments to me. I wouldn't be surprised if he was smiling under his mask.

The worst part of all this? I have all my wisdom teeth and they're all coming in.

      All at once.

      :(

Oh. . . It's in the wonderful world of tech support. It's going well I think, I don't plan on being there for more than a year though, a foot in the door to a career I actually want.

that's pretty cool, I have yet to go to a meet up with RT people. I have actually been out the the RT loop for a while :/ I'm looking to change that of course, I am seriously planning on going to RTX this coming year. Except for real.

Wahoo! What's the job? Superhero receptionist? NASA button-pusher?

We have several peeps! Small story... I just met more peeps at a rooster sheep meet-up with Gus and Jordan. It was awesome!

That's good Wosky! I know how you feel. I think this year I did a good job socializing with peeps. It was sweet! Do they have Peeps in NZ?

A story huh? I have a small story. . . I was working a paint store before. Up and decided I did not want to do that for the rest of my anything. Quit that job with no remorse and found a better job. Which was crazy to do, I got lucky finding that one quickly. And this one is actually in the field I want to career in. I'm confident it'll work out.

I've been good! I'm still busy being an estudiante, but the end is in sight! Otherwise life is going well, I've met some really great people this year, and am spending much more time doing the whole 'socialising' thing which is nice smiley1.gif

      • _Recon_

Yeah it wasn't very fun, thankfully no one was hurt. The worst of it was me having to replace my fender. My hobby? Well it used to be playing Magic the Gathering buuuuut I haven't had time for that either. I have been wanting to get back into it though.

Do you mean go to this years RTX? or 2015 RTX?

Oh no, sorry about your accident, hope you're okay. What happened?

Classes and work have been taking up a lot of time. I was in an accident, that's about the newest thing. I haven't had time to play any games but I was able to beat Tomb Raider, which I really enjoyed. Have you played it? I remember you saying you were a fan.

Next semester I'm planning on being a little more active about my degree e.g. trying to become an intern somewhere (or anywhere I guess). I'm going to try and pick up my game and really shoot for a teacher recommendation. You know, just try and get my resume fluffed up.

Ah idk, I guess it just feels like my classes have been taking a back seat so "we" can get other things done first. Times are stressful, you know? It's just discouraging. I'm going to do my best to stick through it though. The semester is almost half over.

Idk. Now that I think about it I'm not sure I have the imagination to do one! D: I'll try anyway. I think I'm just going to start with a sentence and then go from there. Just see where the words take me.

      • SilverMoose

Oh, that's frustrating. Were you able to work it out?

Yep. I interviewed and got the job; now they're teaching me to do the jb. If I pass, I stay, if not, I leave. Then I can start working for real. LOL. In theory I have labour day off, but I volunteered to come in for learning also brownie points and money

Office Space is pretty good. And cool! What kind of short story will you write?

I grilled with my family on Sat; nothing really Fri or Sun. Then work on Mon. Yay! :( lol. How about you?

      • _Recon_

Ah. . . There was a thing that happened and I accidentally signed up for a class at another campus so I had to drop it and through some Councilor magic I was able to sign up for another course.

Interview for a job to take a class top take a test to start working. Does that mean you have labor day off?

In other news, I finally saw Office Space in it's entirety yesterday. I feel like I need to watch it again to watch everything fall together. The first time I watch a movie it's a story and I watch it unfurl, the next time I watch a movie it's more like a puzzle and I watch the pieces fall into place. Other than that I think I'm gonna try my hand a short-story and a half. That is to say, one short-story to see if I would read my own work then the half to realize I have no idea what I'm doing. Excuse me, I'm rambling.

What are your plans for this three day weekend?

      • SilverMoose

        Yay! :D

Work's been okay. I've actually been in a class, learning how to work (have to take a test), so meh :/

What about you? How's class been :D?

      • _Recon_

Yep yep. In other news I'm being a little more social! I've been getting out of the house to meet 1 WHOLE friend (whom I don't normally hang out with that is). Times change.

        How was the work?

Networking is a good idea. It might be hard, depending on how you commute (I remember bussing was a pain in the ass), but you're right, it's a good thing to start doing. A friend of mine found her job through a former teacher.

I'm gonna try and be a little more "networky" this time around, after listening and reading on forums it looks like a lot of people really regret not networking with people enough. So that's what I'm gonna try and do, I commute so after classes I just leave lol

I had jury duty for the first time today. It was interesting.

      • SilverMoose

Hmm. What type of tale shall I tell you?

Oh, here's one! Ariana Huffington of the Huffington post was the one who spoke at our graduation. I was sitting next to a girl named Annie; she said that her boyfriend's father used to date Ariana, which I thought was cool. So after the speech and everything, the ceremony ends and the process walks down the aisle, and Annie and I have aisle seats. So Annie sticks out her hand and Ariana shakes it, and says "congratulations"

So I think "I want a handshake too!" And stick out my hand. Ariana shakes it, but doesn't say anything and keeps walking. I turn to Annie and say "I can't believe I was just snubbed by Ariana Huffington!" and she said

"Well, I do know her by proxy, so maybe that's why she said hi to me.," lol.

Started a summer job working for the city. It's working with kids but, between you and me (and the internet), I don't think it's going to work out. I didn't think I'd ever become a teacher and after this I know I don't want to become a teacher. I can't believe you remember that! hahaha that was like from an August journal. It has been a while since a Storytime w/ _Recon_. . . I'll see if I can think of something. There are stories but some I'd rather keep off the internet, most of them actually hahaha but if we ever meet in person we'll have a drink and I'll tell one.

No summer classes, I'm all graduated :O So right now I'm looking to build a little bit of a nest egg. Living at home with the parents, so once I get real, steady, consistent work I can start paying for my own phone, car insurance, stuff like that.

Nothing going on with me other than graduating and job hunting/interviewing. What about you? Any summer classes? Any cool we-stopped-the-house-from-almost-accidentally-being-set-on-fire stories? Any mildly interesting stories? Any boring stories, but I know they'll be AWESOME because you told them, and story time with Recon is always fun :D

Dude that is awesome! I totally suck at my job! Dude, kids are rough to work with. Never again.

Summer jobs offer great experience. I hope everything works out in your favor. What have you been up to over these past few weeks? Are you taking summer classes?

Aww, that's a good birthday sounding. Get anything fun? :D

I'm doing well. I kinda landed a job; temp job, so only guaranteed work for about two months before I have to start from the beginning. BUT I also have an interview lined up for Friday for a paralegal job. So worst case scenario, I only get to work for two months, best case scenario I get, like, a real job :O

Silvermoose! It gas been too long! It's good to hear from you again. Thanks so much! It was very uneventful and relaxing. It was good. I think by saying that it means I'm getting old. I did get some gifts though so that was really cool.

Yes, it jumped around quite a bit. Sorry. It was 7am and I hadn't gone to bed yet. Also, I rewrote it three times, but not completely, so there's a lot of stuff in there that led into other stuff that isn't there anymore.

Also, I feel like (for maybe the same reasons) I didn't explain myself well enough. So here we go!

I am a hardcore gamer, and I also enjoy pick-up-and-play. To me, the distinction between hardcore and casual has nothing to do with casual games. I see a casual player as someone who doesn't play "hardcore" games, and a hardcore player as someone who does, not necessarily exclusively. While I didn't say this, I also feel like I should point out that I don't think the distinction has any relevance except in terms of the discussion. The person I think of when I use the term "hardcore gamer" is the person I would have just called "gamer" ten years ago, before web and mobile games became ubiquitous, and those people are a distinct market.

I'm not suggesting that consoles becoming media machines is a problem in and of itself. I've never complained about all the stuff my XBOX can do. It's only a problem in that as the line blurs between computers and consoles (which are functionally just computers with a special proprietary operating system), the consoles lose the edge.

The advantage that PCs now have, which deals with maybe half the rest of your comment, is that people need a computer. As you said, you (and many, many others) bought a computer for some legitimate non-gaming purpose and now happen to play games on it. You also play on a console, but at some point people are going to notice they're buying a PC for work or school that has the same or more power as the console, and it doesn't have to be the latest and greatest. The last time I put any money into my computer was a year and a half ago, maybe two years now. And yet I can play Skyrim and it looks and plays better than on the 360. I also play with the 360 controller, so the play experience is virtually identical. Unfortunately, I don't have a PS3 to compare, but based on what I've heard, my experience is roughly analagous, and the PC still has the advantage in between-area load times. I haven't run into a game that I had to turn settings down on yet.

As for innovation and stuff, I agree partially. Of course setting limits necessitates innovation, but there are plenty of developers who are eager to innovate for the sake of innovation, which is why I mention BioWare and like companies. They don't do anything unexpected in terms of pushing the hardware. They do some REALLY unexpected stuff with gameplay, though. Ditto Bulletstorm, which is average at best, but does some really cool gameplay stuff.

There's another kind of innovation, though, that is directly related to hardware. I'm talking about Halo, and what it did for console FPS. They got a new system and said "What can we do with this?". The same thing happened with Halo 2 and internet multiplayer. I'm talking about Quake, pushing the envelope with 3D technology in DOS with a software renderer, and then being (arguably) responsible for 3D video cards becoming commonplace in PCs. Those are just the instances that come to mind because I was standing there watching and enjoying as it all unfolded. I'm talking about any time a developer looked at hardware and said "This is better than ever before, so let's do something we could never do before."

My whole point is that we're getting to a place now where what CAN be done on a console is pretty well explored. You can get right up against the walls, or maybe approach it differently, but there's no real room for growth on consoles. I think that's part of the motivation behind some of the crazy retro-style stuff that's happening right now. Incredible experiences like Bastion and Braid and Limbo and the Scott Pilgrim vs the World game. This is the kind of innovation you're talking about, but that's possible on any system. The kind of innovation I was talking about is rapidly becoming possible solely on the PC.

As for the money issue, I'm not complaining about it. The point there was: with all those costs, why can't the developers set the price of their arcade games? Sorry, that bit was unclear in that it was built on a subclause in a sentence at the end of the previous paragraph, which wasn't particularly obvious. Restated, assuming that innovation is at least as easy on a PC as a console, and assuming that costs are lower when developing for the PC, and assuming that you can increase your *gross* revenue per unit on the PC, and assuming that everyone already has a PC, why wouldn't you go that route?

Finally, re: Highlander, I thought I was pretty clear when I said there would always be both. The question is focus. For the first time in years, console players are getting stuck with inferior ports of PC games instead of the other way around.

The point of the whole journal was that the guy who was complaining that he uses his Kinect all the time is NOT the guy Jonathan Blow is developing for, but he IS the guy Microsoft is developing for. That's where I see the schism happening. I see more and more (sorry) "hardcore gamers" getting frustrated with the things that aren't important to them, like rear touch screens and motion control, and the UI designs that cater to them. And they're moving to a platform that doesn't piss them off.

One final note, I'm not saying I like it, or even that I agree with it. I wasn't trying to make the case for PCs, and I apologize if that's how it came off. I just read an article and a comment, and then had a bunch of thoughts that I felt like sharing.

I hope I answered your question satisfactorily

      • Knives_Kill

I prefer new, but I'm just nuts when it comes to having a perfect disc and making sure I'm not missing the booklet or anything. I buy games so infrequently now, too, that I'm usually only buying games when it's something I realllllly want, so.... Generally I'll only get used if it's the only way to buy that game anymore.

      • _Recon_

I know what you mean. I've recently gotten out of the habit of trading-in games and try to buy only new. I'll go to Amazon, usually they'll have what I'm looking for a good price, but I still o to GameStop when there are some dollars burning a hole in my wallet. Are you a new game or used game kind of guy.

      • Knives_Kill

Yeah...most of that stuff is just kind of basic supply, demand, profit business type stuff. Game stop just has a huge advantage because, well, they're the only place that does trade-ins and used sales well, so where else are you going to go? Online is always a risk when buying used and no other chain has their selection or the streamlined process that they have.

      • _Recon_

you did! I knew most of those things but it didn't really get into perspective until you put it in that way. And yes, I don't know why they charge so much for old last-console games either

Oh dear, perhaps we should tell the NZ tourist industry that marketing Tramping as a 'Great Kiwi Sport' is not the best image for New Zealand?

You know, I really wish I had taken something like that! Unfortunately one of the first things they teach you is the environmental care code i.e. 'take only photos, leave only footprints'- I would have felt way too guilty if I had!

Recon! I am so happy to hear from you! I was worried that I had offended you with the word "Bastard." It is my go-to word for everything smiley6.gif

Also, so, random apology: A while ago, on one of your comments, I said "Cool Story, Bro." I meant it in the literal; that's a cool story, bro. But then I recently learned that that's usually said in a sarcastic manner, and I felt bad. I'm sorry dude, that is NOT how I meant it smiley0.gif

And we ended up meeting today. It was meh. I have this job next semester, but I may or may not keep it (I'm looking into an internship with a stipend, if I get it, I'm leaving, if not, I'm still looking for a long term job). Bastard. Classes end next Thursday, followed by a 4 day study period, and 4 day exam period. Yay! smiley3.gif

So, speak of the devil with Bacon: Tomorrow is the last lunch program of the semester, and it's my recipe. I chose cheesy potato soup. Although it doesn't say it in the recipe, I also decided to include optional bacon. So I print out the ingredients, buy them, return the keys.

      I forgot the bacon smiley7.gif

I reserved another van, but even if I didn't get it, I was ready to wake up early, walk to the store my damn self and buy the bacon (on the school's dime, of course). But I got the reservation, so tomorrow morning I'll be buying bacon for lunch smiley0.gif

Also, just had a blt. So, Recon, with your magical food powers, convince me to eat something healthy. Like ricecakes. Blech smiley8.gif

Yay! I LOVE weddings. I was a flower girl thrice when I was younger. Now people around me just aren't getting married anymore, lol.

I did not find a more permanent job yet. Haven't been looking as of recently, but most of the jobs being posted are temp jobs for January. Really hoping for something, though. I think I told you, I've started coming in later so I don't have to deal with Sofia; next semester, I have the same schedule, and I'm hoping she has at least a similar schedule, because I absolutely refuse to work with her. And if that means I have to leave, then I think that's wrong and unjust, but so be it.

Yeah, I actually have. Nothing cool involving golfcarts, and most of the jobs are short term, for January, but I am looking into different, permanent, "permanent" work.

And I didn't even consider the wedding thing as "next level"; I am such a socially awkward person. I would be like "Hi! I just met you, but I think you're really cool! Do you want to come to my Cousin's wedding with me?" lol. So, you're doing it the smart way. Congrats to your cousin! smiley0.gif
