Mike Quinn, the head of the web development team just sent out the site notes for the week. Most of it you know but I wanted to share the Upcoming section of that document. The last two items I think covers the lion's share of people's desire for the new video player.

      NYCP4ak.jpg

This is by no means a complete list. Just wanted you all to see what's on the priority list.

Couple of quick updates. Got some great feedback on the vlog. I have been intentionally taking it less "talking head" and more thematic when it comes to conveying information. Seems like people want a mixture of some info and some exploration of life surrounding RT. Next vlog will move back the other direction. I'll try to include the hard info upfront for the new junkies. Eventually I could see the show splitting into two different shows but time will tell.

Also, the feedback on the new player is loud and clear. The number on requested feature has been a Quality control for the video playback resolution. A lot of people have asked for a way to disable auto play so they can peruse comments. You can do that by clicking the X on Up Next whenever that box appears. X is universal symbol for "get that shit out of here"

      burnie

There was just an update to the RT Engineering group in which the dev team announced a new video player for the website. I have asked Tech and Social to move this post to the front page but for now here are some of the details that have been posted.

      -----------------------------

Some new features you can expect:
      Binge watching:

At 10 seconds it will show you the next video coming up and if you don't do anything after that 10 seconds it will automatically redirect you to that next page and autoplay that episode!

      Hotkey integration:
      * arrow key <,> skip 10 seconds back and forward
      * arrow key \^,v for volume up and down
      * P/space bar to play/pause
      * F for fullscreen
      * Number keys from 0-9 skip to a percentage of the video. 0 is 0% and 9 is 90%
      * M key toggles mute/unmute
      * Double-clicking with the mouse toggles fullscreen off and on

      --------------------------------

Let us know what you think. As always these are updates, so it's possible that some features may take a while to get to 100% and it's always a chance that some feature got left out.

In this case, users have made us aware that they would like to manually select resolution rather than rely on the automated process. Mike has said that they are working on that.

So give it a try and let's hear what you think.

    • Live podcast

      burnie

I have noticed an odd trend for the Monday night live broadcast of the hashtag RT Podcast. While the podcast is going, I am reading questions from Twitter and comments on the site, there's literally thousands of posts across those two platforms. Then I go to Reddit after the show ends and I read a thread filled with people that weren't able to view the livestream. https://www.reddit.com/r/roosterteeth/comments/508...

How is it possible that Twitter is happily watching along without any tweets about a wonky stream while Reddit users are universally having so many problems? I get the statistical bias of people in RT site comments being able to watch it -- they are on the site, so are far less likely to have problems. If they had a problem reaching the site, they wouldn't be able to leave a comment saying so.

But why would two independent platforms have such drastically different experiences trying to watch the livestream?

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the great feedback on the FIRST vlogs. I took them over a couple of months ago to experiment with the format and it's been a ton of fun making them.

I am currently working on a new show right now that would use this format in a new way. This would be a more public show, it would not live exclusively on First. So, keep the feedback coming.

      burnie

Word of warning that I intend to openly talk about The World's Greatest Head Massage and the latest Day 5 episode. If you don't want anything "spoiled" for you (most of which you probably know already anyway) then I would suggest avoiding my journal or Twitter feed for the next few days. Also the podcast. Basically if you see me, just run away.

These two particular videos have been rolling around in my head for about five years now and I want to be able to talk about them. However, I understand the need to keep your viewing experience clean and some of you have not had time (or a FIRST membership) to see these shows.

On that note, right now is a perfect time to get a free trial. If you get one right now, you can get caught up on Day 5, watch both parts of the documentary AND be able to see the conclusion of Day 5 before your free trial ends.

      Just sayin'.

    • Million Dollars, But... The Game

      burnie

One of our favorite things about making the show Million Dollars, But... is the day that we get to sit around at the bar and debate the ridiculous scenarios we have concocted. The heart of the show is the "clarifying round" where people get to ask questions about their idea to really figure if they would do it. And now, we have a way for you to experience that as well. I am proud to announce our first ever card game: Million Dollars, But... The Game, which goes live on Kickstarter at 12:01 p.m. CT today.

Ever since Lazer Team, I have been trying to find a way for us to recreate the awesome experience of our crowdfunding campaign. It was such an incredible community experience that ran for 30 days, but lasted for over a year. It made our first-ever feature film possible, and created unique experiences like theatrical screenings and the "Infamous 535."

Our first step into the world of tabletop gaming seems like a perfect fit. Our goals are much lower this time around (cards cost less than movies), but it's a great way to introduce our game to the world. And we have some really cool social games planned for the stretch goals, which we will announce once the dust from our launch settles. We even got to make one of those ridiculously pretentious announcement videos.

Thanks for your support. I hope you love the game as much as we have loved designing it. #ButStuff

    • Lazer Team Crowdfunding Report Card

      burnie

If you listen to the podcast or were around during the Lazer Team campaign, you probably know that I am a huge fan of crowdfunding. I often show up with some bizarre gadget that I backed which will (I am sure) change my life immeasurably for the better. And the Lazer Team campaign was an awesome, summer-long community event that reminded everyone in the world just how massive and supportive the Rooster Teeth community is.

Sadly, the story for crowdfunding the last few months has been some very high-profile projects failing to deliver the products that were backed. The goal for our campaign was to deliver the first-ever Rooster Teeth movie, and we did that in ANOTHER record-setting evening of crowdsourced screenings all over the globe. You guys should get a record for breaking records.

As Lazer Team heads into the home stretch toward a retail DVD/Blu-ray release, we wanted to pause and evaluate the progress of the campaign, break down the funds, and lay down some dates for the final deliverables.

To that end, we have produced the following report card which tells you everything you need to know about the project we made together:

      PNo34jg.jpg

Any questions or comments? Hit us up in the discussion below!

The final physical deliverables are the signed scripts, which have been manufactured and are currently being signed by members of the writing staff. The digital scripts will go out when the physical ones do.

      Scripts being signed:

      ZsAUdIa.jpg

That leaves the last digital stretch goal: three more installments of my favorite show, Game Time. Next week, I will sit down with three new guests to record those episodes. I've already announced Meg Turney and our production designer, Marcus LaPorte. I am happy to say that my final guest will be Lazer Team co-star, Mr. Michael Jones. Prepare your ears.

Thanks again for all your support during Lazer Team. It would not be the same movie without you!

Hey Burnie, I was just watching your talk at Texas State (great job, by the way) and just wanted to clarify something about the Wow! signal since I figured you'd be sort of interested. The Wow! signal isn't actually decodable since it didn't record any form of modulation (AM or FM). It's also not that nobody recorded where the signal came from; it's just that in order to locate the signal's origin it had to be detected twice by two different satellites, and it was only detected by one. This could mean that one of the two malfunctioned or that the signal ended between the time it stopped being picked up by the first satellite and the time it would have started being picked up by the second. Still, we can determine that it came from one of two places from just the one satellite. Either the middle of nowhere, or somewhere in Sagittarius (I think). Not trying to be an asshole on the Internet who has to correct everyone, just thought you'd want to know in case you didn't already.

Burnie, since Ray is going away, how does your company handle the fact that he was a content producer, or even I daresay an actor with him leaving? I'm curious, once he leaves, is he permanently disassociated with Rooster Teeth? This is obviously barring if you hire him back. Or does he have some tenuous relationship with the company? I'm not suggesting something like a royalty per say.

Also, if Ray wanted to come back, how easy would it be for him to get a job with you guys again? I'm speaking hypothetically of course, because I doubt you're give out his employment history. But I am curious, if he was a good worker (not implying that he was or was not), would you make a job for him if he came back?

Hey Burnie, I was wondering If could ask for some advice on a certain subject. As my time on the site rolls on, I see more and more new people enter the site and community, whether it be by posting in the First Stop forum threads or friends in real life coming to me for advice on how to get involved with the community. I tell them to try to interact with as many people as possible, take an interest in other community member's projects or content creation, be welcoming and helpful to the newbies who come after them, and utilize the site as much as their time permits them (forums, journal posting, sponsor chat, etc). I feel like after a while though, I'm missing something; a key piece of advice I can give that will benefit new users. Which is why I am asking you, if you could give a new community member a key piece of advice for making their time on the site and the community an enjoyable experience, what would it be?

During the Limbo stream you said something that really stuck out, 'A CEO that takes a company from 1-50 employees can't take it to 50-500." I don't think that's the exact quote but something close to it. As someone who is mid-level in a company that's at the turning point, that really stuck with me. After you said it, I thought about it a great deal and it's exactly what we're about to deal with in terms of growth. I just wanted to say that was well said and spot on.

Hey Burnie if your truly interested in leaving apple here is something for ya. First you can go to Google contacts and export contacts from apple. Next you can use the desktop version of apple to download songs onto your computer. From your computer you will need to get chrome. Then go to Google play music and upload the music from your computer. Lastly plug your phone into your computer and simply pull the photos out through file explorer. Once their on your computer go to chrome again to Google plus photos hit upload and all your photos will go to Google and accessible through Google at anytime. If you would like to have some advice on what phone to get i would have a few suggestions. One a moto X highly customize if you don't plan on getting a case. Next would be the Samsung s4 possibly 6 i know people that have battery issues. Lastly i would suggest a Nexus Phone or a one plus phone. Nexus is always a solid choice. Say you break you phone and you got a nice customized phone and you have to wait a day or two for a new one i would go get a moto e 2nd gen if you were to sign into your Google all your music contacts and photos would transfer immediately until your new phone arrived, which when it would you simply switch it. I hope this is slightly heplful also tell Gavin that the apple camera is crap for filming its only 8mp, the moto X, and nexus 6 for example have a 13mp camera . I hope this abbreviated advice will be helpful.

Do you think Nintendo wants a portion of the revenue because they don't make enough money? I mean it could be possible that since they aren't making as much as they have hoped, they think they should get part of the money they "deserve."

      • Castus13 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I agree with you on the points you made, particularly on the logical discussion point- an ultimate compromise needs to be reached between CC's and companies like Nintendo.

The guys at Fünhaus put it quite well saying that Nintendo does need to update their business model and recognise the new, far greater interactive connection they have with their consumers, instead of relying upon their traditional means of approaching an issue that sits outside of that particular field of control. However they can't really do that, if the CC's impulsively demand entitlement to make money off of the work that their developers put into creating these beloved games.

Personally, I don't believe that Nintendo needs to rely on the coverage provided by Youtubers to garner positive attention towards their newly released products (in the relation to phenomena such as Minecraft and other indie projects). With a fanbase that stretches back a few generations, there is already a secured position for purchases as hype develops in the Nintendo community prior to the release of these titles. Yet, in the same token, I do believe that essentially placing (what I'm guessing is) a fairly large 'tax' upon those fans that wish to spread their love of their favourite titles, whilst making a sustainable living, is somewhat exploitative and garners negative attention which, as you said, will thus impact upon their future sales.

Rooster Teeth has lots of personalities and we allow them to express their opinions as they see fit. I do think it's telling that we posted two videos that day with two (slightly) differing opinions on the Joe/Nintendo issue but people chose to focus on only the only that could lead to conflict. Shouldn't be surprising, his name is Angry Joe after all and not Let's Talk About This In A Reasonable Manner Joe.

I totally disagree with Nintendo's stance which puts me more in the Joe camp, but I also think we can't berate IP owners into acquiescence. It has to be a more logical discussion. My personal approach is that if Nintendo doesn't see the value in what we do, we won't make videos in their games. I think this will have a negative affect on their sales and they will change. Nintendo has somehow managed to price themselves out of the best free marketing in history.

I totally agree with that, I think its an issue that needs to be rectified whilst looking at both sides of the story.

It's something that can only really be looked at rationally whilst sitting on the fence, choosing one side does both the Content Creators and Nintendo a serious injustice, as neither of them can both understand where to improve upon and allow them to reap the benefits of their work.

I personally believe a better compromise needs to be achieved, one that doesn't give either the ability to play the exploitation card. Maybe an open forum from Nintendo or perhaps a more definitive (and reasonable) set of suggestions outlined by independent Youtubers? At the moment there's no talk from Nintendo, and waaay to much talk from the Youtubers- nothing being achieved.

      • RagArk

Could I tell you what I think?

I'm at the middle. It should be understood that, yes, Nintendo owns the right to these games. And YouTubers are making money off something they didn't make. While it's free advertisement, Nintendo believes they should make money off that. Some YouTubers are making serious money. Nintendo just wants a big slice of that pie.

That said, it's free advertisement. Nintendo is still making money. You could say that they are making a bit more because of it. However, like I said, they want a bigger piece.

It is their work. They made those games. Everyone wants credit for their game, joke, or their original idea. Why should we be mad at Nintendo when we don't want other people stealing our stuff either?

Granted, we're not making millions of dollars, but it is still ours. Like I said, everyone wants their credit and whats due.

I've been supervisor of one of the largest 3D conversion companies for almost 3 years. We've converted most of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters during that time.

My profile pic is in anaglyph 3D, because it had to be compressed down to one image. If you have a pair of red-cyan glasses lying around, take a look. smiley0.gif

      Thank you in advance!

      Dear Mr. Burns,

Throughout my whole life I've always had a interest in gaming, whether it was playing the newest game that came out on my console to hearing what new graphics made the game look more like reality.

I'm currently finishing up my first year of college and as I came in undeclared I had no idea what I was going to do with my life. I took general education classes, as a usual undeclared freshman does, just trying to get a feel for different categories for what I might find an interest in. A couple month ago I had a serious sit down with myself on what I would want to do with my future, as I couldn't be undeclared throughout my whole college career. Personally for me I can't imagine myself in a bland office being strapped to my chair crunching numbers all day into a spreadsheet and repeating for five days a week. In the future I want to do something that I feel really passionate about and bounce off my creative ideas with the people around me, maybe even the world! It then came to me, gaming.

Now we get to why I'm writing this. I just declared to become a marketing major and I now realize that my dream job is working for the gaming industry. This is no means me saying "Hey can I work at RT?", I'm here asking advice from you. Since I plan on going into this market, and you have a wide variety of knowledge of this industry since working for Machinima and now Roosterteeth, what are some tips you can throw at me?

Yes, I know I'm only a freshman and I have 3 more years but any help for the future is gladly appreciated! Keep on doing what all of you guys are doing at Roosterteeth. I can't wait to see what RT has in store for the future!

Once again thank you for your time Burnie.

      Take care!

      Hello Burnie!

A While ago I sent you a message telling you about my new channel I set up, called ‘Do Over Gaming’. I only had the intro video up so logically I didn’t expect a response. After a long month of waiting for my tripod to come in, I finally have something to actually show you!

I have finally finished the first episode of ‘Do Over Gaming’ on Watch Dogs. Our channel focuses around games that received a lot of negative criticism at launch, and we take a look back at them to see if they managed to fix themselves. Most people will skip on a game when the reviews are bad, but what they usually never see is that reviews release date. With patches being common place in today’s gaming world, I thought it necessary to do this.

Your channel, among others, is what influenced me to start this, and because of that I am now motivated to join the cause! I've been working my butt off trying to get this video out there so everyone can see it!

Down below I’ve linked the video, I've received a lot of positive, constructive criticism from people such as Totalbiscuit, and really want more feedback so I can further improve my channel!

I’d appreciate any feedback, negative or positive, about the video! This one episode cultivates the years of experience I’ve had with video creation and I really do think that it was a good showcase of what I can do given the limited hardware/budget I had!

I realize this isn't typically the kind of videos you personally create, but I figured I would send you it just in case!

Hey, I sent in a submission for the #BestDayEver contest, and It only allowed me to talk about a script for the short I've written. I Thought perhaps if I sent it right to you, that you may see it and perhaps read it...

      No Kidding

      {A man is sitting with his head down at a booth in a bar. Another man walks past and recognizes him then he retreats a few footsteps back to him, looking puzzled}
Man 2- Chase, hey. (He taps the still inanimate man on the shoulder and has a seat)
Man 2- (He elevates his voice)Chase! (His voice stabilizes at an indoor level) Hey, Chase.
(Man 2 puts his finger into the tight ball that is the Chase's Arms and head and stuffs it until he finds the nose. Suddenly the Man surrounding his finger jumps to wakefulness)
Chase- Hey, what the fuck man?
Man 2- Hey, sorry, it's me, it's Alan.
Chase- Well, Hey Alan. Gee Alan, ya mind Fucking off Alan? Thanks.
Alan- Hey man, don't be a jackass.
Chase- Hey MAN, I don't know you. Do us a favor and take a long walk in any direction away from here.
Alan- From work, I work in the cubicle right next to yours. What's the matter, anyways?
(Chase looks despondently down at his wallet)
Chase- Just spent a night thinking about what's important to me. Woke up in the wrong place is all.
(Alan sneaks a peek at his wallet and sees that chase is looking woefully at a picture of himself and his bank card. He disdainfully reaches over and pats him on the shoulder)
Alan- You know, I sometimes find myself down in the dumps too. It helps to talk about it.
Chase- Down in the dumps? I came here to celebrate.
(Alan is further perplexed. When he's about to get up and return to his party, the waitress comes)
Waitress- Hello sweety, I remember you from last night. What can I getcha'?
(Chase signals her to come closer and whispers what he wants. She looks at him as if to laugh, but his cold expression stops her and she writes it in)
      Waitress- Mhm, and you mister.
Alan- Mister? You know me Darla. I come in here three times a weak. It's Alan. (whispers to himself) Doesn't anybody remember Alan?
Darla- Sure, Alan.(she turns to Chase with a long face and shrugs) What can I getcha'?
Alan- You know what? Get me three shots of whisky.
(Alan drops his face on the table and Chase stares into his wallet grinning joyously)
Darla- Okay, three shots for you and a... Coffee for our loyal customer.
(Alan throws two shots back before noticing that chase is drinking coffee from a wine glass. This makes Alan pause and slow swallow the third shot causing him to become choked up)
Alan- Why? (He points at the glass, still struggling from being choked up)
Chase- Why what? (He takes a sip of his coffee with his pinkie shot out)
Alan- (His throat returns to normality) You are drinking coffee from a wine glass!
      Chase- I don't like mugs.
(Alan gives him a dirty look and gets up leaving without a word)
Chase- Hey, screw you man! I don't even know you!

      {The next day in the office}
(Alan knocks on Chase's cubicle. Chase exits out of a window in which he was editing a picture of himself to look like a Superhero, and turns around quickly.)
Chase- How can I help you?
Alan- Hey, I just wanted to say sorry about yesterday, I guess I was just in a bad mood.
Chase- Mhm, and who are you?

Hi Burnie, my name is Keane Gamao, and I'm a fan.
To make things simple, I'm a fan of Monty Oum and his work.
Until now, I can still admit that it's very hard to get over the loss.
This might be hard to ask for, but is it possible if I can know where Monty is located right now? I'm planning to give my respects to him in a personal matter.

Um, he's in the ground? Unless you were planning on traveling to his grave in god-knows-where I don't think Burnie will be of much help.... I don't think that even Burnie knows where he's buried.

Honestly believe this will fall on deaf ears... But I don't know what else to do... Rooster Teeth has always been the symbol of hope in my life. I've always wanted to meet you guys. I remember watching Red vs Blue and it just making all the troubles in my life go away. Then someone that I started to idolize become a part of that. Monty Oum. I was so excited. I remember thinking I was gonna save up to go to RTX and meet you guys. Had some family issues couldn't make it but never got behind on your content. Finally I saved up money and I was going to go to RTX 2014 found out I had Grade II Brain Cancer. After months and months of surgeries I got behind on Podcasts and Achievement Hunter stuff. Only got to see the first episode of RWBY. Finally just got back into the flow and starting to recover. March 20, 2015. I then found out about Monty. I've never met him... But I can't sleep. I can barely eat. I'm 23 years old have no job and have cancer but I feel worst about that lost Monty. You guys are a symbol of hope to me that... Someone no matter who they are or what odds they have stacked against them can make a job out of doing something that you love... I don't even know why I'm writing this.

Hey, just a random fan here. But I'm rewatching the Blood Gulch Chronicles and I started thinking, since the Director has FILSS delete all files (and I know this is WAY after BGC) including herself. Was she copied to be put into the tank that we all know and love as Sheila? Or is it one of those, meh, fuck it, just go with it kind of things?

      Hey Burnie!

Just got flaked on by a date. It sucked. Then I spotted the Lazer Team trailer email in my inbox. watched it..... and was laughing out loud. The trailer alone was brilliant and I’m super psyched to see more. And considering the way the internet sometimes only shows the negative I thought Id send you a message (I don't twitter :/) to say you guys are awesome! You bring joy to peoples bad days. And thats a grate thing. Keep it up!

      Hi Burnie,

I've been a fan of your work and your company for a long time, and a sponsor for a little bit less of a long time. You have a huge focus on the future and on youth that I think is incredibly admirable and incredibly important.

I was wondering if you would consider bringing up the Zeitgeist movement in things like the podcast or your journal as in my opinion it is one of the most important ideas that the younger generations of today need to know about. You have such a far reach with your company and so many young people watch and love the things you do and say that I believe you could have a profoundly positive effect on the way the youth in America think about the future.

Here is a link to one of their videos: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xGyKuyGhaE

It's quite heavy and not exactly the most up beat but I truly believe that if you were to bring it up a vast amount of people would look into it and start to expand their ideas.

You seem to truly care about the future of this planet and you love new technology so it seemed reasonable to me that you might be interested in these ideas and would like to support them.

I hope you see this and take it on board. I hope even more that you agree with me and follow through.

      Thanks for everything

      Colky
