A few of you have noticed in the Upcoming schedule that Crunch Time Ep 2 is coming out before Crunch Time Ep 1. That is by design. They are releasing at the same and we reversed the order so that EP 1 would be at the top of the Most Recent videos. We reversed them so they wouldn't be reversed.

Has Rooster Teeth looked into using drones for filming? I feel like they'd capture great footage in Immersion.

      Answered: Sep 10, 2016

I know this question is older but I have been using a drone in lots of the vlogs.

    • Grifshot117 asked burnie a question

Hi! I was wondering, how often are you recognized by a fan in public?

      Answered: Sep 10, 2016

About 3-5 times a week, depending on if I travel that week.

    • fabsz asked burnie a question

Is there any intention of bringing back downloads with the new video player?

      Answered: Sep 10, 2016

I have not seen that on any roadmap.

    • Anubism asked burnie a question

In your opinion, do you think RWBY has the potential to exceed or outlast Red Vs Blue

      Answered: Sep 10, 2016

Exceed definitely. Outlast is a different animal. Fifteen+ seasons is very, very rare territory in any medium.

    • LaSole asked burnie a question

Do you ever get lazy or lose motivation while writing something? If so, how do you power through it?

      Answered: Sep 10, 2016

Going to answer this with a quote from a fitness magazine. I think it's a great way to look at motivation, which is not something you can control:

"Fuck motivation. it’s a fickle and and unreliable little dickfuck and isn’t worth your time.

Better to cultivate discipline than to rely on motivation. force yourself to do things. force yourself to get up out of bed and practice. Force yourself to work. Motivation is fleeting and it’s easy to rely on because it requires no concentrated effort to get. Motivation comes to you, and you don’t have to chase after it.

Discipline is reliable, motivation is fleeting. The question isn’t how to keep yourself motivated. It’s how to train yourself to work without it."

Mike Quinn, the head of the web development team just sent out the site notes for the week. Most of it you know but I wanted to share the Upcoming section of that document. The last two items I think covers the lion's share of people's desire for the new video player.

This is by no means a complete list. Just wanted you all to see what's on the priority list.

Couple of quick updates. Got some great feedback on the vlog. I have been intentionally taking it less "talking head" and more thematic when it comes to conveying information. Seems like people want a mixture of some info and some exploration of life surrounding RT. Next vlog will move back the other direction. I'll try to include the hard info upfront for the new junkies. Eventually I could see the show splitting into two different shows but time will tell.

Also, the feedback on the new player is loud and clear. The number on requested feature has been a Quality control for the video playback resolution. A lot of people have asked for a way to disable auto play so they can peruse comments. You can do that by clicking the X on Up Next whenever that box appears. X is universal symbol for "get that shit out of here"

    • New Video Player

      burnie

There was just an update to the RT Engineering group in which the dev team announced a new video player for the website. I have asked Tech and Social to move this post to the front page but for now here are some of the details that have been posted.

      -----------------------------

Some new features you can expect:
      Binge watching:

At 10 seconds it will show you the next video coming up and if you don't do anything after that 10 seconds it will automatically redirect you to that next page and autoplay that episode!

      Hotkey integration:
      * arrow key <,> skip 10 seconds back and forward
      * arrow key \^,v for volume up and down
      * P/space bar to play/pause
      * F for fullscreen
      * Number keys from 0-9 skip to a percentage of the video. 0 is 0% and 9 is 90%
      * M key toggles mute/unmute
      * Double-clicking with the mouse toggles fullscreen off and on

      --------------------------------

Let us know what you think. As always these are updates, so it's possible that some features may take a while to get to 100% and it's always a chance that some feature got left out.

In this case, users have made us aware that they would like to manually select resolution rather than rely on the automated process. Mike has said that they are working on that.

So give it a try and let's hear what you think.

I have noticed an odd trend for the Monday night live broadcast of the hashtag RT Podcast. While the podcast is going, I am reading questions from Twitter and comments on the site, there's literally thousands of posts across those two platforms. Then I go to Reddit after the show ends and I read a thread filled with people that weren't able to view the livestream. https://www.reddit.com/r/roosterteeth/comments/508...

How is it possible that Twitter is happily watching along without any tweets about a wonky stream while Reddit users are universally having so many problems? I get the statistical bias of people in RT site comments being able to watch it -- they are on the site, so are far less likely to have problems. If they had a problem reaching the site, they wouldn't be able to leave a comment saying so.

But why would two independent platforms have such drastically different experiences trying to watch the livestream?

Hi Burnie, in a past podcast you talked about writing a story based around a time machine that sends messages into the past. The machine tells the operator "Turn off the machine. Run."

Anyway, I submitted your idea to Writing Prompts on reddit to see what people could come up with. Then I realized I should probably ask your permission first. I realize you aren't likely to read this but I felt that I had to try. If you want I will remove the post from reddit.

Supreme Court Opinion Makes Prosecution of Internet Trolls More Difficult

*Disclaimer – I am not licensed to practice law. The following is a reflection of my reading of a Supreme Court opinion, and should not be relied on by anyone. I am not advertising my services, seeking compensation, or looking for notoriety: I am offering an explanation of the significant legal principles as I seem them for informative purposes.*

Today the Supreme Court ruled in Elonis v. United States that a law often used to prosecute internet users who make threatening comments over the Internet could not be used unless the perpetrator knew the language to be threatening. Prior to this ruling, most courts held that an internet threat is illegal if a reasonable person (e.g. the person being threatened, other site-users) would feel threatened. The court today, however, found this rule was not an accurate interpretation of the statute, and required that any person convicted of making internet threats must be “blameworthy in mind before he can be found guilty.†While this ruling is a win for internet users who say the threats they make over the internet are intended for therapeutic or cathartic reasons, I am concerned that Internet threats are often made in passing while read quite seriously, making prosecution difficult under any other interpretation. This ruling requires authorities to demonstrate that a threat was made to be taken seriously, or at least made with the awareness that it might be taken seriously—a more difficult standard to prove unless the defendant admits what he or she was thinking when the threat was made.

The facts of the case are that Anthony Elonis was arrested for 5 counts of violating 18 USC §875(c) which makes it a crime to transmit “any communication containing any threat to injure the person of another.†The statute was enacted in 1939 to apply to telecommunications that existed at the time, but is still used for federal prosecutions regarding threats made over the internet. Elonis made threats towards his coworkers, resulting in his termination from the amusement park where he worked. He also made threats against his wife, saying “Fold up your [Restraining Order] and put it in your pocket/ Is it thick enough to stop a bullet?†and providing details to the public on his Facebook page detailing what he believed to be the most effective way to fire mortar rounds at his wife’s home and not get caught. He made threats against Police; as well as an FBI agent that visited his house about the threats, posting to his Facebook after the incident “So the next time you knock, you best be serving a warrant/ And bring yo’ SWAT and an explosives expert while you’re at it/ Cause little did y’all know, I was strapped wit’ a bomb/Why do you think it took me so long to get dressed with no shoes on?/ I was jus’ waitin’ for y’all to handcuff me and pat me down/ Touch the detonator in my pocket and we’re all goin’.…†Finally, Elonis commented on another Facebook user’s post, “That’s it, I’ve had about enough/ I’m checking out and making a name for myself/ Enough elementary schools in a ten mile radius to initiate the most heinous school shooting ever imagined/ And hell hath no fury like a crazy man in a Kindergarten class/ The only question is… which one?â€

At trial, the jury was instructed that Elonis was guilty of breaking the law if a reasonable person would have understood that the posts he was making were real threats, which are not protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. Elonis argued that the word “threat†indicates that he must purposefully or knowingly make the threat to cause someone to feel threatened; a fact which was not determined at trial and which Elonis argues he did not intend. The government argued that Elonis’s purpose in making the argument did not matter because the statute does not require “an intent to threaten†only that the communication includes a threat. The trial judge agreed with the government’s argument, thus instructing the jury that Elonis was guilty if a reasonable person would have understood his words as threats. The Supreme Court overruled this jury instruction, sending the case back to a lower court to determine if Elonis was guilty based on some other interpretation of the statute.

The lower court now must consider whether to adopt Elonis’s interpretation of the statute and require that internet threats be made with the purpose or knowledge of being threats in order to be illegal. If this interpretation is adopted, Elonis is less likely to be convicted because the jury is more likely to take him at his word that he did not intend—and did not know—that anyone would take his posts seriously. The Court could also choose a middle ground between Elonis’s and the Government’s argument by applying the standard of recklessness. Elonis recklessly threatened his victims if: 1) He had a substantial awareness that his words might be taken as threats; and, 2) A reasonable person would have understood that Elonis’s words were threats. This interpretation would likely result in a conviction because the jury would be allowed to infer that while it may not have been Elonis’s purpose to threaten, and while he may not have been certain that his words would be taken as threats, he must have at least been aware that his victims might interpret his words as threats. While the recklessness standard is likely to result in a conviction, the recklessness standard is more likely than the purposeful or knowing standard to be found a misinterpretation of the statute (again) or an unconstitutional burden on Elonis’s right to free speech. The Supreme Court has not offered a definitive ruling, only saying that the method used in this case of interpreting a threat through the eyes of the threatened (the same way most lower courts had interpreted the law) is incorrect and must be retried.

Obviously, the legality of Internet threats is an important issue to anyone interested in safe, well-meaning, and healthy Internet ecosystems. This case highlights the difficulties in prosecu

Hello Burnie, I have something to ask of you and other Rooster Teeth members. I'm planning on making a RPG tribute game of influential internet stars, such as the members of Rooster Teeth. So I was wondering would you guys mind if I put one of you, or one of the characters created by you guys, into the game? I can understand if RT asks me not to do it, hence why I wanted to run this by you first.

Why doesn't Doctor Emily Gray fix Lopez's voice box.

How about if Church said that to like Simons and Simons tries to tell Sarge who ignores him and then 'comes up with the idea himself'. Then what if when she did, Lopez sounded like Church, then everyone was really creeped out and Lopez says a shit load of really mean stuff to all the reds that Sarge will just blame on the Blues. Then Doc Gray turns the Spanish back on. Just think of the funny possibilities.

I'm totally interested in a follow up story or recap of that event, or what JD had to say about it year later after the fact.

      Burnie,
You may not read this but there is a girl in Rhode Island that is a huge fan of all things RT. Last year she was diagnosed with chronic Lyme Disease and has been unable to do the things a normal girl should be able to do. Tomorrow, Wednesday May 13, is her 16th birthday. She will not be able to celebrate it as she should due to her disease. Furthermore, tomorrow she will begin using IV bags that will make her feel like she has the flu. I have talked very briefly with her and she asked me to contact you to thank you (for what exact purpose I do not know), and said to ask for a temporary follow on Twitter @Lindsey_Clark11 or a friend request on this site. Her RT username is lindsey_11. What I am trying to do with this message is make her tomorrows featured user, but I don't know if I'm too late to make that deadline. I encourage you to please read the rest of her story as she said it on her Tumblr loserwithlyme.tumblr.com/

      Bell Peppers & Yardbird:

I kno u have issues with chicken, so we won't call it chicken, m'kay?

      What U need:

      3 yardbird thighs thawed.
      Olive oil
      Large-ish green bell pepper
      Italian seasonings
      Med/Large white/yellow onion
      Finely ground black pepper
      Salt/sea salt to taste

      In a small mixing bowl:
Chop into chunks the thawed yardbird, onion and bell pepper. Drizzle olive oil over chunks. Stir and shake Italian seasonings liberally over. Repeat.
Place into a bbq basket onto a grill heated to about 300/350*.
      Let cook.
Ok, I'm not too sure on how long I let this cook (I was doin shots of kraken, and I really didn't pay attention...) but I stirred occasionally and sprinkled finely ground black pepper and sea salt on it every now and then.
      Cook til done.
Eat. (As if that need be said.)

      Hi Burnie,

A while back I watched a podcast in which you discussed a scene you shot with Joel, where you panned the camera around and all the people in the background flopped on the floor (you were discussing how gross the sound of so many people falling to the ground was). It was an apocalyptic video, I hope you understand which one im talking about.
I found that scene very well done and I'd like to share it with a friend who's really into filmmaking, but I cannot for the love of God find the video again or the podcast with the link to it.
I was wondering if you know where I can find it again, so I can share it with my friend.
      Thank you very much!

      Mvg,

Hey Burnie, I was just watching your talk at Texas State (great job, by the way) and just wanted to clarify something about the Wow! signal since I figured you'd be sort of interested. The Wow! signal isn't actually decodable since it didn't record any form of modulation (AM or FM). It's also not that nobody recorded where the signal came from; it's just that in order to locate the signal's origin it had to be detected twice by two different satellites, and it was only detected by one. This could mean that one of the two malfunctioned or that the signal ended between the time it stopped being picked up by the first satellite and the time it would have started being picked up by the second. Still, we can determine that it came from one of two places from just the one satellite. Either the middle of nowhere, or somewhere in Sagittarius (I think). Not trying to be an asshole on the Internet who has to correct everyone, just thought you'd want to know in case you didn't already.

Burnie, since Ray is going away, how does your company handle the fact that he was a content producer, or even I daresay an actor with him leaving? I'm curious, once he leaves, is he permanently disassociated with Rooster Teeth? This is obviously barring if you hire him back. Or does he have some tenuous relationship with the company? I'm not suggesting something like a royalty per say.

Also, if Ray wanted to come back, how easy would it be for him to get a job with you guys again? I'm speaking hypothetically of course, because I doubt you're give out his employment history. But I am curious, if he was a good worker (not implying that he was or was not), would you make a job for him if he came back?

I find it funny how you mentioned months ago that the concept of the movie Poltergeist wouldn't make sense today, due to the absence of the television fuzz that allowed the ghost to enter the living world. And yet here they are putting out a remake next month. Would love to know your thoughts on this.

Hey Burnie, I was wondering If could ask for some advice on a certain subject. As my time on the site rolls on, I see more and more new people enter the site and community, whether it be by posting in the First Stop forum threads or friends in real life coming to me for advice on how to get involved with the community. I tell them to try to interact with as many people as possible, take an interest in other community member's projects or content creation, be welcoming and helpful to the newbies who come after them, and utilize the site as much as their time permits them (forums, journal posting, sponsor chat, etc). I feel like after a while though, I'm missing something; a key piece of advice I can give that will benefit new users. Which is why I am asking you, if you could give a new community member a key piece of advice for making their time on the site and the community an enjoyable experience, what would it be?

During the Limbo stream you said something that really stuck out, 'A CEO that takes a company from 1-50 employees can't take it to 50-500." I don't think that's the exact quote but something close to it. As someone who is mid-level in a company that's at the turning point, that really stuck with me. After you said it, I thought about it a great deal and it's exactly what we're about to deal with in terms of growth. I just wanted to say that was well said and spot on.

Wow! while I don't know why you would come to Fairport in the middle of February that's pretty cool! I actually work at Woodcliff Hotel in Victor down at the pool so if you ever need a place to stay I have to recommend them (gotta give a plug for them)

I was in Fairport two months ago. The post I wrote about Monty was when I was there with my sons.

Hey Burnie if your truly interested in leaving apple here is something for ya. First you can go to Google contacts and export contacts from apple. Next you can use the desktop version of apple to download songs onto your computer. From your computer you will need to get chrome. Then go to Google play music and upload the music from your computer. Lastly plug your phone into your computer and simply pull the photos out through file explorer. Once their on your computer go to chrome again to Google plus photos hit upload and all your photos will go to Google and accessible through Google at anytime. If you would like to have some advice on what phone to get i would have a few suggestions. One a moto X highly customize if you don't plan on getting a case. Next would be the Samsung s4 possibly 6 i know people that have battery issues. Lastly i would suggest a Nexus Phone or a one plus phone. Nexus is always a solid choice. Say you break you phone and you got a nice customized phone and you have to wait a day or two for a new one i would go get a moto e 2nd gen if you were to sign into your Google all your music contacts and photos would transfer immediately until your new phone arrived, which when it would you simply switch it. I hope this is slightly heplful also tell Gavin that the apple camera is crap for filming its only 8mp, the moto X, and nexus 6 for example have a 13mp camera . I hope this abbreviated advice will be helpful.

So...What's your stance on the whole Angry Joe v. Nintendo nonsense?

Honestly, I don't think anyone really knows. It's just one of those things, I guess.

Hmmm, good question. I'm not sure really, that might be the case, or they could be just trying to cash in on the Youtube phenomena. Again, I don't know really.

Do you think Nintendo wants a portion of the revenue because they don't make enough money? I mean it could be possible that since they aren't making as much as they have hoped, they think they should get part of the money they "deserve."

I agree with you on the points you made, particularly on the logical discussion point- an ultimate compromise needs to be reached between CC's and companies like Nintendo.

The guys at Fünhaus put it quite well saying that Nintendo does need to update their business model and recognise the new, far greater interactive connection they have with their consumers, instead of relying upon their traditional means of approaching an issue that sits outside of that particular field of control. However they can't really do that, if the CC's impulsively demand entitlement to make money off of the work that their developers put into creating these beloved games.

Personally, I don't believe that Nintendo needs to rely on the coverage provided by Youtubers to garner positive attention towards their newly released products (in the relation to phenomena such as Minecraft and other indie projects). With a fanbase that stretches back a few generations, there is already a secured position for purchases as hype develops in the Nintendo community prior to the release of these titles. Yet, in the same token, I do believe that essentially placing (what I'm guessing is) a fairly large 'tax' upon those fans that wish to spread their love of their favourite titles, whilst making a sustainable living, is somewhat exploitative and garners negative attention which, as you said, will thus impact upon their future sales.

Rooster Teeth has lots of personalities and we allow them to express their opinions as they see fit. I do think it's telling that we posted two videos that day with two (slightly) differing opinions on the Joe/Nintendo issue but people chose to focus on only the only that could lead to conflict. Shouldn't be surprising, his name is Angry Joe after all and not Let's Talk About This In A Reasonable Manner Joe.

I totally disagree with Nintendo's stance which puts me more in the Joe camp, but I also think we can't berate IP owners into acquiescence. It has to be a more logical discussion. My personal approach is that if Nintendo doesn't see the value in what we do, we won't make videos in their games. I think this will have a negative affect on their sales and they will change. Nintendo has somehow managed to price themselves out of the best free marketing in history.

I totally agree with that, I think its an issue that needs to be rectified whilst looking at both sides of the story.

It's something that can only really be looked at rationally whilst sitting on the fence, choosing one side does both the Content Creators and Nintendo a serious injustice, as neither of them can both understand where to improve upon and allow them to reap the benefits of their work.

I personally believe a better compromise needs to be achieved, one that doesn't give either the ability to play the exploitation card. Maybe an open forum from Nintendo or perhaps a more definitive (and reasonable) set of suggestions outlined by independent Youtubers? At the moment there's no talk from Nintendo, and waaay to much talk from the Youtubers- nothing being achieved.

Could I tell you what I think?

I'm at the middle. It should be understood that, yes, Nintendo owns the right to these games. And YouTubers are making money off something they didn't make. While it's free advertisement, Nintendo believes they should make money off that. Some YouTubers are making serious money. Nintendo just wants a big slice of that pie.

That said, it's free advertisement. Nintendo is still making money. You could say that they are making a bit more because of it. However, like I said, they want a bigger piece.

It is their work. They made those games. Everyone wants credit for their game, joke, or their original idea. Why should we be mad at Nintendo when we don't want other people stealing our stuff either?

Granted, we're not making millions of dollars, but it is still ours. Like I said, everyone wants their credit and whats due.
