Yeah yeah, it's been awhile, blah blah, I keep with damn near all of you in other ways so I hardly see the point in journals anymore. Only reason why I'm doing this here is that it's built for long form, and I wanted to type this up in detail.

Also fuck Facebook. I'm done with that shithole.

So anyways, what's your D&D character? We've all been playing it, I know y'all love it, so hit me with it. If you were a character, and you were stuck as it for the rest of your life, who do you want to be?

Me? I'm a Halfling Paladin. (But Greg, you're a giant!) Yeah I know I'm a huge dude, but there's just something about Hobbits Halflings that I love. For me, the ultimate in existence would just be dipping my feet in some pond, fishing all day, then heading down to the pub to drink with my neighbors and friends and chat the night away. If I were to win the lottery today, the rest of my days would be spent sitting around, reading, fishing, and buying all my friends round after round at the bar. (Seriously, I ain't giving nobody money if I win the lottery, but you damn well better expect me to buy you many, many drinks, and probably even a vacation or two.)

So why a Paladin you ask? Well it's definitely not a religious thing, as I'm far, far from holy, but I do have a code, and I will follow it. The idea of the Dunedain Rangers protecting The Shire in Middle Earth always captured my attention, and they were my first real fantasy heroes. While in real life, I never had much drive to become a policeman (mainly due to my own dealings with them, and want to become a Firefighter instead,) I could see myself doing the medieval equivalent. As long as I live in a quiet place, so my fishing and reading is rarely interrupted. And if I do have to suit up to defend my little town, I might have a hard time getting my breastplate over my tummy. Really, I'm more in love with the idea of community, and serving it, whether that be through protection, or help.

So that's me. I just want to be that happy, probably fat halfling, that sits around and fishes all day, until the wolves come prowling and I start swinging with some probably over-sized sword.

      How about you?

    • Post RTX and The Plight of the Driver

      glaberge LaBear

So RTX came and went once again, the oh so glorious and beautiful week of social gathering, walking, fun, and well... copious amounts of drinking. It was a great time this year! I managed to meet even more new faces, there was a boat cruise, a river float, a Rooster Speak dinner, everything! Honestly I don't know how much I can write about it again this year, it's just always so amazing.

What I'd like to focus on this year is what I will call the Plight of the Driver. Now I've experienced RTX in about every way I can imagine. I've driven down, I've flown down, I've been a carless resident, and now, I'm a car owning resident. Each one has it's own ups and downs, but here's the thing about being a driver:

It's fucking tough. See there's 5 main trips you make as a driver. They are as follows:

      1. Going to the airport to pick someone up.

This is an awesome trip. You can't make wait to make it there and see your friends, have them near, hear stories, tell stories, force them to listen to your music, everything.

      2. Coming home after picking someone up.

This is the best trip. It is so full of happiness, you're doing all those things I mentioned before. It's damn near pure bliss.

      3. Shuttling.

This is where things start to get rough. When I first came to RTX, we walked everywhere. Literally everywhere. I didn't get in a vehicle again until we decided to leave. Nowadays though, we've found more and more attractions further out. Add in the fact that ride sharing apps aren't quite as easy this year, and that adds up to a lot of people needing rides. So you volunteer, because these are you're friends, and maybe someone has to get home, or someone has a party they'd like to get to. We do it because we love our friends. And so we drive someone somewhere, then we come back, a lot of times alone to find...nothing. Nobody. Everyone has already left to go do something else. Plans were made, and dinner is currently being had, or is already finished, and you're left to grab a sandwich at Royal Blue or a depressing dinner alone waiting to hear back from someone on what's going on. Honestly, this can get a little taxing.

      4. Driving people to the airport.

Now it's just getting depressing. Your friends are leaving, and there's a good chance you won't see them for a year, hopefully less. So you drive them to the airport in a last ditch effort to cling on. A lot of times not much is said, there's just a feeling of general depression. Stories have been shared, jokes told, by now there's just not much left. So you drop them off, and there's hugs, maybe tears, maybe someone ninjas a 20$ bill into your sun visor so fast that you can't even politely try to decline it, and then they're gone. It fucking sucks.

      5. The drive back home.

Now the worst. So often made alone, it's the drive back home. It seems to take twice as long as it ever should have, and you think of 20,000 things you wish you could have done, said, or experienced more with your friends. It's about as shitty as it gets. But then you get home to your beautiful girlfriend (or boyfriend, spouse, friends, pets, or any other significant other, or hell just your home(seriously, I love my home)) and you get to start remembering. It get's a lot better, and soon, you're already thinking about next year. You even contemplate making a stupid little taxi sign for your car as a joke.

So as someone who has now been in all seats of the car including behind the wheel, please, thank your drivers. They love you, and they love driving you, but it is a wear and tear sort of thing to do. A little thanks goes so, so far, especially when coming from those you love.

      Thanks,

Greg out...to go find a Cubone... and Sandshrew...and more Growlithes.

Holy shit it's been awhile since I posted an update, guess I should do that eh? How about we do one of them year in review things, sure that sounds fun.

So 2015 has been a year of change. In the beginning of the year I moved out of my private studio, just outside of Downtown Minneapolis. My insane travel schedule that ruled 2014 slowly dwindled as I moved in with a friend in South Minneapolis. I visited Austin in February with some friends, got to see the studio, and have a lot of fun.

Visited Austin again in April, and it was then that I knew my mind was made up. I started looking for positions, and by the time RTX came around, I had left Cuningham Group, and packed my bags. I finally moved to Austin, and just as RTX kicked off, I too started my new job with the State of Texas Teacher's Retirement System.

Sadly, the first place I moved into was a complete disaster. I don't know if there was just a miscommunication or what, but I soon found myself living in hell, and spending a lot of my time at Reta's apartment with her and Hazer. By September, we had all moved in together in a fine apartment, far, far in the Northwest of Austin. (A bit too far if you ask me, I'm going to be looking much closer in next time.)

October went by with a lot of fun. Started DMing a DnD game which has been awesome. November was pretty damn fun as well. Thanksgiving was a bit of a mess I won't lie. Sadly everyone was working strange and mismatching hours, so there wasn't much we could do.

On a higher note, November found me dating again. This time my roommate. I never planned it, and sure as hell never saw it coming, but apparently me and Reta have some pretty good chemistry, and I am more than happy to say we are dating.

Anyways, just got back from the holidays up in MN. Drove up on Tuesday Night/Wednesday, had Christmas with a family I despise, then the following day celebrated with a family I tolerate, then drove home. Did at least get to see/visit some friends during that time, but it wasn't nearly long enough. It was a horrible drive as well, just shitty weather and shitty drivers.

Getting home last night at 8pm to friendly faces was probably the best part of the week if I'm honest, and I'm very happy to be home.

So here's to a great new years holiday, (which will be bacon wrapped) and to another wonderful year in 2016!

Never really been a big fan of the Back to the Future series, saw em, saw em again, then kinda forgot them.

My ambivalence has sorta turned to hatred now with it's proliferation in the media, and I couldn't be happier that we're about to be beyond Back to the Future Day.

So, I'm a huge fan of the movies and story, but I'm not hearing the greatest about the game and other than GTA open world generally doesn't tickle my fancy. Should I get it? Will my love of the story hold me over through it? What should I do about my roommate? Is it worth the $60?

What a lovely mistress you are, and truly, you are a mistress. See, you are my escape to life, a chance to see my closest friends, eat like a growing teenager, and drink like a college junior. I get to be with you for a week out of the year, and by far that week is the best out of all the rest. It's not even close, that is the greatest time for me.

This year was something special for me. I had just moved to Austin, and started what is quickly becoming the happiest time of my life. I finally feel that I'm establishing a good work/life balance, and (once I get internet) I'll have the social element back in my life. As much as I love Minneapolis, I had to get out to make the change, and I'm so happy I did.

My RTX started Tuesday. I got into work, my second day at work, and couldn't concentrate on anything. I knew I was moving into the condo that night, and I couldn't wait. Me, Dan, Michelle and Newbs all hoped in Dan's car and headed for my place to grab my stuff, then off to Torchy's to see Laurin. Had a damn good time and ate delicious food like usual.

Wednesday is when my memory starts to go a little hazy. Went to work, once again fully concentrating on anyhting but work, then got out. Met up with everyone, as the stream of people coming into town amplified, and next thing you know, we're going on a pub crawl. There was rushed double scotches, punching machines, amazing friends, then sickness. Maybe I over did it that night... but as per usual, did end the night at Shakespeare's...

Thursday was lovely. See I had a ticket to the charity auction, but my feet were dead from walking back and forth between offices 3 times that day, and the last thing I wanted to do was get dressed up. So I threw on much shittier clothes, bought a bottle of rum, and headed to the hotel for Pacific Rum. We may not have paid much attention to the movie, but it was still a wonderful night relaxing and drinking with friends.

Friday... hmm Friday was pretty awesome. Went to work, then ran the fuck back after. Newbs had a panel at 4:30, and I didn't get out until then, so I ran as fast as I could to get to it. Ran inside the JW and it was like I was being guided by all my close friends as I rushed through the hotel at their direction. Only to finally being ushered into the panel by Hazer after registering in record time. Good panel too, sad I missed half of it. After the panel I got thrown into the floor in search for a Cubone plushie, guided by Ty and Newbs, my heroes. Don't worry, I got my Cubone as well. That night, we headed back out. First BD Riley's for dinner (this is where things get hazy for the weekend) then we ran over to Buffalo for billiards, then shuffleboard. It was another amazing night, Lammy got in, then I left to go pass out for about 10 hours.

Saturday morning was my private time, watching the opening weekend of the English soccer leagues, and cheering on my team. After that, headed for lunch with Reta and Newbs, then spent the after wandering the floor with Reta. Bought another shirt, hung with Fernando and Mindy at their booth, and then headed for Geeks Who Drink. Despite a couple of horrible randos on our team, it was still a great time. Anyways, went back to the hotel, played some games, had some good times, and then went to sleep.

Sunday... I can't recall what happened on Sunday if I'm perfectly honest. Laurin had her panel, I dragged Reta to it, it was a damn good time. Such a good time I took a nap after it. (Actually I had a serious headache.) Then, after that was the dinner. The RSMUD. What a time, what a fucking time. I love that party, and I love Newbs for hosting it. I can't remember all of it, but I do recall getting the boot from Buffalo, after about midnight, then being kinda sad.

(currently sitting in a meeting discussing software updates we want to push out, including flash, firefox, adobe and java. Super Exciting)

Anyways, after getting the boot, me and Schraver headed for Shakespeare's for a few more drinks. Went back to the hotel to, what was quite frankly a hilarious shit show. Had an interesting night after that, and headed back to the condo around 3:30 am.

Monday was kinda the last day of RTX really. Main event being the river float. We were missing a couple faces, but all in all it was an amazing time. I got tehtered to the cooler, and therefore Reta, and it was pretty hilarious. Honestly, I haven't had that much fun for a long time. I even got beat up by a rock or two and it was still incredibly fun. ANyways, after those couple hours on the river, we headed for the Salt Lick, and all was well...at least in the restaraunt. We had far too much food, me Dan, Reta and Drekr became a family bonded over meat, copious amounts of meat.

Anyways, by Tuesday I was back to work, and most people were leaving. Now I'm just getting depressed, moved back into my own apartment, with no internet... On the bright side, more and more of my friends are deciding to move to Austin, which makes me very happy. So come on down! Lets make this our own fucking town.

    • RIP Dex

Last night, the uncle to two of my closest friends, a pillar of our Robbinsdale community, and a true father figure in my life passed away. It was a particularly hard thing to take, as not 24 hours earlier he had been standing around, chatting merrily with the rest of my family at my farewell party. I spoke with him about my future job and plans, and as Dex always was, he was extremely proud of me and made it known.

Dex may have only technically been an uncle to a few messed up kids, but in reality he was their father, and he was very much a father to me. He was the father on the south end of the street, while my own was the father to the north. These were the men that kept us in line, made sure we were appropriately punished for our misdeeds, learned the true meaning of community, and how to get the job done right by putting in the work (often as a punishment to those previous misdeeds.)

Dex was part of a team of mothers and fathers that took four kids, from three different families, who by rights shouldn't have had any future what so ever, and made us into what we are now. Four successful adults heading into careers, backed by their wisdom and the confidence they instilled in us.

Thank you Dex, for teaching me so much, and for always being there. Thank you for the giant half pipe we built in your back yard, the lessons you taught both me, and my father in owning dogs, and most importantly, the lessons you taught me in being a good person. It's a shame that you won't go down in history as one of the greatest men ever, as that is easily what you were, but something tells me that's how you'd like it.

Thank you sir, I'll be sure to do you proud.
