      School is done!

Well, for the quarter at least. You know how people say the longer you stay in school, the more you know about an increasingly small amount of stuff? Yea... so I could explain to you exactly how to analyze the vibration of an imbalanced machine, or how to size the tubing of a bike stem to deal with the forces of riding. I find myself slipping more and more, however, when it comes to stuff outside the realm of mechanical engineering, which is a tad depressing. I would take some more courses out of my major, but I really want to be done with school.

Speaking of being done: 3 quarters left! Unless I do grad school, which I should given the current work climate and the fact that I could get my expenses paid if I work the thesis some people want me to. It's just, school's a grind :(.

On the plus side, though, I've gotten to the point where I can actually get paid as an engineer for my work, which sure beats $12/hr at my old job. I'm in second round interviews for a hardware design position with Apple, which could be cool, and I'm talking with a couple robotics firms as well.

As to why I'm writing this now: I realized I was spending as much time talking politics on a different board as I used to here, only the people there were far dumber than those here and it was far less satisfying. Plus, I missed the cool people. I've determined that breaking the internet addiction is futile for me, so I might as well redirect it someplace I enjoy :).

      So...

Hey all, figured on a whim I'd pop back in here and let you all know how things are going. I kinda miss this place, and I'm thinking I might be back for a while :P.

I just finished up my first quarter of actual school - I'm studying mechanical engineering with a concentration in mechatronics (basically, a discipline combining computer science and electrical engineering with mechanical design to build robots and various other automated systems). I'm at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo right now, which is working out pretty well.

Other than that, life has been pretty tame. I've gone on a bunch of climbing expeditions, as a friend and I are training to climb El Capitan the summer after next.

      adamsportf3elcapitan.jpg
3000 feet (a little over half a mile) of awesome climbing

I also finally found a girl (actually, a while back, but I'm not sure when I last wrote), after resigning myself to dying alone :P. She's incredibly smart, beautiful, an amazing musician... so that's been making me quite happy. She has a year left on an engineering degree at Smith college, outside of Boston, but she's taking this year off and staying in San Francisco. As such, my time has been split between doing well in school and heading back to SF. Luckily it's only 2 1/2 hours to drive between the two, so it hasn't been that big a deal, and we'll both be done with degrees in a year and a half anyways.

So that's my life. Off to check out what everyone else has been up to!

Also, for some reason Cal Poly decided to overlook the fact that I withdrew from half my courses last semester and scraped C's in the others, as well as overlooking the fact that one of the courses I withdrew from was one of the four courses that you absolutely have to take for admission to the CSU system, and gave me a call today saying "hey, you're in!"

      "Seriously?"
"Yea, we just got your final transcripts today. It'll take a couple days for registration to open up for you, but you're in"
"You, um, read through all my transcripts, and there's no problems?"
      "That's correct"
"Alright, what was your name again?"

      *writes down name*

So now I have a record of my admissions officer calling me and saying that I got accepted, which means even if they go back on it later and say "yea, actually there's a problem here," I have a leg to stand upon.

Now to quit my job, find a new job, find roommates and an apartment, move out all my crap from my house, register for courses, and tie up loose ends in my life here... in less than a month. Should be fun :P

P.S. I'm back on teh interwebs. Sorry for disappearing you :P

      Pirates 3

So, what the fuck were the scriptwriters smoking when they came up with this... well, it's hardly fair to call it a story. More a three hour series of gags and fights, and Keira Knightley looking oh so fine.

      potc30201hh4.jpg

      Seriously. Damn

Thats not to say it wasn't entertaining on that basis alone. However, in the parts without the afformentioned eyecandy, you're left with those nagging questions, like "wtf, wasn't he eaten by the kraken?" There are more, but at the risk of spoiling what little there is for those who care I'll abstain. As I walked out of the theater, my friend mentioned that he had no idea what was going on through the film, saying "yea, it probably would have helped if I remembered what happened in the other two."

      No, no it wouldn't.

      potc3005ps8.jpg

Wait, why are they steering the ships towards the whirlpool of doom?

All in all, a fun but mindless couple of hours that grows tedious in between the CGI. You'll probably see it, just be sure to adjust your expectations to compensate.

      ABC News - Emos Exposed!!!!1!@~1`1!!`1!!

      Reporting at its finest, people

ABC 4 News is sounding the alarm about a teen phenomenon sweeping the nation. Its something we found most teens know about, but few parents had any clue of. Its called "emo" culture.

"Emo" is an abbreviation for emotional. Part punk, part goth, emo kids celebrate sadness and pain. Psychologist Judith Zimmerman tells ABC 4 News, Part of the guiding philosophy of emo kids is pain. That's the sub-current.

Our news team began their study of emo culture on the internet, where we quickly found hundreds of sites dedicated to teaching kids what emo is and how to be it. One site instructs, dye your hair black. Style it in the gunshot wound and never be happy.

Happiness is a sin to emo culture. In a state where the number two cause of teen death is suicide, experts say parents need to know emo culture and understand it.

Not every child who looks emo may be in to cutting themselves, dark poetry or talk of suicide, says psychologist Judith Zimmerman. Some of these kids may just be in a phase. Its important to tell the difference between a fashion statement and a commitment to a lifestyle. Parents need to understand the deeper meanings of why their child might be drawn to emo culture.

For more information on emo culture, click here.

ZOMG UR CHILDREN R TEH EMO WATCH OUT THEY LIKE CRYING AND SUICIDE. YOU HEARD IT FIRST HERE

Complete with a link to Wikipedia, apparently because they couldn't afford any more experts to explain how the fact that your kid plays angsty guitar means he's into cutting...

      A conversation with Steven Colbert

An hour long interview with Steven Colbert, out of character

Quite an interesting interview, at the Harvard Institute of Politics. It's also rather funny, as the guy interviewing him is your standard Ivy League nerd, and kept on getting really really awkward when Colbert poked fun at him :P.

Actually, back in school. I left at the end of the summer. It was a tough decision, because national campaigns are a great deal of fun, but it's for the best. Plus, I get to fly out tomorrow for a two-week vacation in New York... as opposed to calling thousands of voters and standing in frigid Iowa winter weather.

      What's up with you?

Florence and Venice are INSANELY expensive to live in. But I've heard that they're beautiful. I've never actually been myself - I've only seen Rome (amazing city) and Milan (highly overrated and buttfuck cold in winter).

Since Venice is sinking, I say you go with Florence.
