      1. If I didn't go into Nursing, I think I would have done something with foreign languages. I took Spanish in High School and have kept practicing ever since. I'll usually introduce myself to Spanish speaking patients by saying, "I know enough to get myself in trouble." I haven't had any formal education in Sign Language, but over the years I've picked up a 150-200(?) sign vocabulary. I know how to say "Thank You" in 10+ languages (I definitely can't speak all of the languages my patients do, but I can at least show some appreciation to them).

      2. I have dissected a fetal pig, a dog shark, a frog, and a cat. Yep, gotta love all the Biology courses I took in school. Too bad some of them were right before lunch. smiley8.gif

      3. Nathan and I have been a couple for more of our lives than not. Yep, us crazy kids have been holding hands since we were 14 almost 15. I am one lucky girl. smiley12.gif

      4. I didn't learn to downhill ski until I was close to 18 years old. I am a wee bit of a control freak..which means not knowing how to turn or stop without falling made me panic like nobody's business.

      5. I am slowly building my spice tolerance. I grew up in a city that only had Chinese and Mexican food for ethnic food. My paternal grandfather thinks some taco seasoning and Sweet Thai Chili sauce is too spicy. Since I've been living in the Vancouver/Portland area I've thoroughly enjoyed having more ethnic food options. I now order my food with "Medium Spice" at our favorite Thai food restaurant and don't go with the boring flavors when we go for Wings.

      That's me...

Everyone has been sharing such beautiful memories and kind words about Monty. It is abundantly clear how much of an inspiration he has been and who knows what kind of an impact he will continue to have.

It doesn't surprise me that this great community that is my online family has really pulled together during this tough time. Some chose to offer condolences. Some donated to the support fund. Some shared art. Some shared memories. Some took the opportunity to talk about what's most important to them or ask the tough questions.

I choose to offer my ear and my shoulder:
      -PpaaGeDaS_twPegP3Dft9ZUH8TuirRytS2NEeMF

I also choose to look around me and appreciate the beautiful, wonderful, and special things I may take for granted.

Here's a few things I suck at both drunk and sober:
      -Bowling
      -Painting my fingernails
      -Throwing darts
....and last but not least posting journals with any regularity.

Any activities that you are better at while drunk?

    • A Journal by Lukie (Ex-RvB Member), Hosted by Karli

      karlibean
Hi Everyone! I miss writing journals and thought I would write one and have one of my friends host it. Please give much love to Karli, because she hurt her foot.

For those of you who did not know, back in April a colleague encouraged me to go traveling on my own. Within 3 weeks of the conversation, I booked a soul searching trip to Costa Rica spending a week at a yoga retreat in August. I had a few extra days after the retreat to explore the country on my own.
      545207_10101443594996340_2104175843_n.jp
In La Fortuna (it's like Niagara Falls but with a volcano) I booked a white water rafting trip. After I signed up I saw that it was a Class III-IV which is intermediate-expert conditions. I've never been but since beginners were welcomed and I was up for adventure, I was okay with it.
      Swimmers
On our way to the Sarapiquí River, our tour guide Diondes spent about an hour going through the safety procedures. I was starting to get a little bit nervous. He said that every trip they take, there is always at least ONE person that falls off the boat, and they call them the "Swimmers". He said that if we fall off, the best thing to do is to lean back, and let the current take us away, they'll save us. DO NOT RESIST. DO NOT TRY TO GRAB ON TO JAGGED ROCKS. My only goal for that day was not to be a swimmer.
      Rafting
When we got into our groups, I was put in Diondes' group with a family of 3 and 2 women. I was sitting on the right side, with one of the women beside me. When we started rafting, Diondes welcomed us to his office. IT WAS AMAZING! I picked up everything quickly and had a blast. The water was intense and Diondes was crazy. He was screaming and laughing and the guides would all fling water at us pretending to sneeze. The woman beside me almost fell at three times; finally, the guide switched us so I now sat on the left.

      The Secret
The Mom in the family was very impressed that I went to Costa Rica by myself because I looked so young; I told her I was 29. She was very surprised and thought I was her other daughter's age [19]. We reached the bottom of a cliff, and Diondes said we could jump in and swim a bit. While I was swimming, I was chatting with Diondes. He asked me how old I was and I said I was 29. He was very shocked and asked me what my secret was. I thought it was very interesting. I came all the way to Costa Rica to find out their secret, and in turn, they ask me what mine was.

      1235182_10101460928225410_1246774485_n.j
      The Jump
After swimming, they took us up the 15 foot cliff. Diondes said we had 3 choices:
      1. We could take a running leap into the water.
      2. We could jump into the water from the edge of the cliff.
      3. They push us in.
I decided to be a bad ass and do the running jump. I started running from where I was told and when I reached the edge I saw how fucking high 15 feet was screamed, "SHIT!' and jumped. It was exhilarating and I swam to the shore.

      1236498_10101460931743360_1877560177_n.j
      Goodbye, Cruel World
We continued our journey. Before I knew it, the boat started tipping on my end, I was practically kissing the water and there was nothing to hold on to (without taking the boat or someone down with me) so I had to jump ship. When I fell into the water, I realized that this was it. I realized then that if this was the end of my life, I was okay with it. I leaned back and was ready to let the current take me to wherever it was going to.
      My Saviors
I wasn't even taken 30cm away until there was another boat. I swam up to them said hello and everyone on the boat rushed to pull me on board, I still had my paddle so I gave them that first. Their guide pulled me in and I just laid there sprawled across everyone and told them I needed a minute. Their guide jumped out of the water to save the other person that fell off in my boat because Diondes was having trouble saving the other woman (not the one beside me).
      Let Go
They finally were able to save the woman and got her on my rescue boat. Diondes brought our raft over so we could switch back. Everyone was so surprised I fell in because I was doing very well, we all wished there was instant replay to see what went wrong. The woman beside me was very happy that she didn't fell off but I was slightly annoyed with her. Her friend also fell with me. Diondes scolded the other woman that fell because she was resisting too much and he wasn't able to save her.
      1003846_10101460930740370_149014919_n.jp
      Soul Searching
I travelled all the way to Costa Rica to find peace with myself but I found out that I already found myself and was already living a life with no regrets. Sometimes we have to fall, instead of trying to cling to what made us fall, we have to let go and not try to grab on to any jagged rocks on the way. People will be fighting to save you.
      TL; dr
I went to Costa Rica to find myself. I went white water rafting and I fell in. I jumped off a 15 foot cliff. I'm doing everything right already. If you fall, let go.

This journal is being written on my shiny new Surface. *squee*

My grandma turned 80 today. I am very blessed to still have her around. I intend to spend as much time with her as I can: learning, laughing, and just enjoying her presence. I love her feisty, positive attitude about life. If you take anything away from this journal, I hope that it is: Spend time with your grandparents while you still can!

So...my laptop died a while back. We revived it...it died again. So we decided when the Surface Pro came out that we would jump on that as a replacement. We have the keyboard cover, but are still waiting for the actual Surface to ship. Maybe I will be more likely to interact on here now that I won't rely on my phone as my primary mode of internet access. (Yes, I am typing this on the home PC, but it's kind of Nathan's baby in his Halo Nerd Cave).

What else is new you ask?

smiley9.gif I've started back into Yoga. This time around I've found a Vinyasa studio less than 5 miles from my house. So far my shoulders aren't so tense that they feel like rocks and I've dropped a few pounds.

smiley9.gif Say what you will about Minor League Hockey not being as awesome as the NHL, but I'm still hooked on our local team, the Winterhawks. We have the best record in the entire league right now (51-11-1-2)! I am hoping we finally get back to the Memorial Cup this year.

smiley9.gif Finally going to make it to Hawaii and RTX this year! We will visit Maui in May just in time for Nathan's birthday. And boy am I excited for the epic (probably sweaty) event in Austin this July.

Yay for eating, sleeping, exercising, and working!

I'm an uber-slacker when it comes to posting journals on here. So I'll try to make up for my absence by posting something at least mildly entertaining more often...such as the following:

As I lay awake, wishing I could sleep before my scheduled shift, I found myself wondering something only a "word nerd" would wonder:

Back in the day--when people actually had a vocabulary that included multi-syllabic words that painted a clear mental picture for their audience--how did they phrase the sentence, "That was some fucked up shit!"?

OK RT Community, you are some of the nerdiest/geekiest people I know--knock my socks off with some colorful suggestions (Think Oedipus or Macbeth)!

I just learned of something new that opened up in Vegas: the Mob Museum

don't know if you would have any interest in seeing it or not - i think its neat!

"Located in the heart of downtown Las Vegas, The Mob Museum showcases both sides of the notorious battle between organized crime and law enforcement. With high-tech theater presentations, iconic one-of-a-kind artifacts, and interactive exhibits, you can finally discover the whole truth and nothing but the truth. "

Oh hell yes I enjoyed myself! I think this was the best PAX I've ever been to, not least because of Halofest, but mostly because of being an Enforcer. I'm volunteering for four days of duty next year, three just wasn't enough. I met some of the most wonderful, amazingly funny people, I got to know that I helped 70,000 geeks have an awesome weekend. I missed the afterparties and a bunch of the panels I wanted to see, but it was worth the sacrifice.

Yeppers. I was one of the people that stacked all the PAX programs, arranged swag bags, commandeered orange tape for barricades, and obsessive compulsively straightened EVERY SINGLE barricade for the morning lines. The Queue room was my headquarters, although I also did line management at the Paramount.
