A lot of people like to shit on Destiny. Yes, it has its problems. A questionable loot system and a lack of story driven content for example. But, what game doesn't nowadays?
Every Youtube video about Destiny has those comments of "People still play Destiny?" Yes, yes we do, sir. A lot of us do. Probably most of us who play actually find it fun. Why is that so hard to believe?
A Spark of Light booster pack is now being sold for Destiny for $30. It will level one character up to level 25 (the base level you need to play The Taken King Story), and level up one sub-class (my guess would be the year 1 ones only, because you have to do a quest to unlock the year 2 ones anyway), telemetries to help level weapons, and likely outfits them with appropriate gear.
With year 2, Bungie gave everyone a Spark of Light that leveled a character to level 25 and outfitted them with appropriate gear. The only difference between this Spark and the $30 Spark is that it completely levels a subclass as well. The original Spark did not level your subclass.
I feel like the boost is aimed at one of four groups of people:
1) New players who have friends who are all high levels, whom they want to play with.
2) Returning players who have neglected their characters.
3) Players who only regularly play one class, but want to level up another class quickly.
4) Specific console players that are switching to the opposite console and can't be bothered to grind.
I fall partially into that last category. I play on Xbox, but I'm getting a PS4 tomorrow, and, because I enjoy the game, I ordered TTK because it was on sale. I won't, however, be buying the booster, because I'm actually looking forward to doing the story (I say that loosely) missions again, but with the Year 2 changes, i.e. the quest system.
Some people see this boost as Bungie making the switch to "pay-to-win" micro-transactions. I'm sorry, but no. This boost isn't end game. It just gets you, quickly, to the point where you can play the specific Taken King content. It doesn't make you raid ready. It doesn't make you a master at Trials or Iron Banner. It merely lets you skip the grinding of year 1 content.
All of the items that Destiny has offered as micro-transactions have been cosmetic, up until now (with the slight exception of that dang record book for SRL, though the things it nets you aren't necessarily better than what drops). Who cares if I spent like $120 to buy every emote in the game, aside from my wallet? It doesn't affect my game play in anyway. If people want to buy the boost, let them. it doesn't affect your game play in any way. Not everyone has the 10-20 hours to spend to get up to level 25.
Until Bungie starts selling Strange Coins, Motes of Light, syntheses, exotic shards, weapons, or armor for real money, it's not pay to win. It's pay to dance. It's pay to skip the barely there year one story. Also, remember that these micro-transactions fuel your free new content.
Until then, calm down people. Enjoy the damn game for what it is. Or don't enjoy it. Either way; I don't care. Just calm down.
