The events in this journal were pertaining to the past week when I intended to start typing this, laziness and life delayed me so hence the +2.
Last week was a pretty packed week for me, filled to the brim with awesome, with a small side of WTF.
Lacking anything else generic to say about it I guess I'll just get on
I've worked at GM for going on 5 years now, not to be
confused with working for GM. I've been what they referred to as a
"fee for service" or "contract" employee which basically
translates to a full-time-temp. Which puts me under the classification of 'not an actual GM employee'. I
worked for a third party company for less money, no GM benefits, and was remarkably
easier to fire.
any more!!! I got an interview late July to be hired GM direct (yes,I had to
interview for the job I was already doing) and was given an offer and a
start date early this month to become a "real employee" effective Sept 1st. This is awesome for a lot of reasons, the most obvious of which being money and benefits. Also I finally get vacation! I got 2 weeks of vacation before but it was kind of a joke because GM shuts down for about 3 weeks a year so you didn't really get any vacation you chose. Not the case anymore. So I worked a total of 3 days before taking 2 days off.
I hinted at it earlier that I actually still have the same job position and management and my vacation was planned like a month or so ago. It just looks worse on paper than it really is, but more on that in a minute...
Our tradition at work is the same one you had in elementary school, when it was your birthday or other big event, you get to bring in treats for the class. "Bait Piles" as they are commonly referred to now serve as a reason to stop work and socialize for a few minutes and of course eat junk food you didn't pay for. One such event worthy of a bait pile is when someone gets hired so to shut everyone up telling me to bring in food I obliged. My treat of choice is from a deli down the road the makes a really good breakfast pizza. I tried to preorder some Wednesday morning on my way into work and was confused on why the phone was busy, for like 30 minutes. So I just drove there accepting that I was going to have to wait for them to cook now. My curiosity was being enticed by the high number of emergency vehicles that kept passing me. I finally make it to the deli and discover it is a raging inferno. 'Well that's a good reason to not take my phone call'. This was the fore mentioned 'WTF moment'. Don't worry no one was hurt but I did have to listen to a never ending string of people asking me "so I hear your pizza was a bit over done" or that "I didn't have to burn the building down if I didn't want to bring it in that bad".
So on a lighter note, what did I do with said vacation you may ask? Some friends and I took a trip to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. I had never been and let me tell you it was a blast. I ended up taking my old GMC pick up out there, starting with the mentality that I was just going to use it as a butt hauler so I wasn't dependent on others and I could drive around and explore on my own. Well that changed almost immediately and ended up with me driving home on Sunday missing the middle of my front fascia (plastic bumper), driver's side fog light, front plastic skid plate and sporting a broken universal joint in my front drive shaft and 2 broken exhaust hangers. Totally worth it! It was a comforting feeling, if not a bit damning to my truck's condition, to have open offers from 3 different people that if their trailered-in dunes toy made it out in one piece then they could tow my truck home on their trailer. Thankfully it didn't come to that but it did present me with the rare opportunity to not think twice about launching my truck into the air off of a giant sand mount. Hehe.
I ended up getting Labor Day off anyway and taking Tuesday off just because I had things to work on and tinker with (other then my recently broken truck). My story ends with me having to go back to work like an adult to be a productive member of society...
That's all I've got, thank you for your time lol.
