      Curse you, BioWare! Curse you!

All I wanted was my FemShep and Garrus to retire to some peaceful spot and spend the rest of their days together, but noooooooooo! Sigh. That's the problem with playing a series for so long and getting so emotionally invested in the characters. I actually cried at the end. And the "best" endings aren't much better, from what I hear. smiley3.gif

EDIT: BioWare would be smart if they had downloadable happy endings. I know I'd buy one..

He now looks like Wormtail in the Harry Potter movies. And Desmond was completely unrecognizable.

This bit of advice is my Christmas gift to you:

When sneaking up on a room full of enemies in Skyrim, and you decide to use Aura Whisper to see how many there are, double check that you have Aura Whisper equipped and NOT Whirlwind Rush.

I do photo restoration as a hobby. In the aftermath of Katrina I saw so many people interviewed who had lost everything, and for many of them the loss of their family photos was the most devastating blow of all. My husband was just starting his 14 months out of work after losing his job and monetary contributions were out of the question, but I was dying to do something. Unfortunately there was just no way.

Except there was. Is. This past week I finally found www.operationphotorescue.org . I wasn't the only one whose heart was broken by the Katrina victims' losses of their irreplaceable pics. One guy got it started, and it's snowballed since then. OPR sends teams into disaster-ravaged areas, scans people's damaged photos, and then distributes them to volunteers to restore. When restoration is complete they print the photos and return them to the families--all at no cost to them. I was accepted as a volunteer restorer on Wednesday and have started my first one, a photo damaged in the Ohio floods a few months ago. I am SO excited about this, I can't even tell you!

A team just did another scanning run to Joplin last week so there will be photos from there soon. And you know what's really cool? People from 40 different countries are working to restore American disaster victims' photos.

This video was made a few years ago, but the only thing that has changed are the number of disasters (and they're .org, not .com now) ...

P.S. If you get an error message on the embedded video, the video still works if you click the link.

I've always assumed the Carmines are just comic relief, and their presence and deaths have no real meaning.

C3PO, Jay and Silent Bob, Falstaff, and Corporal Timothy Upham were all comic relief, yet they all had purpose and meaning and characterization and reasons to exist. Plus when something bad happened to any of them, you felt bad as an observer.

    • Frankfurter

Oh and Maria! Her death was probably the best death and one of the most moving moments in the entire series.

    • Frankfurter

Of all the people, I never understood why the writers kept killing Carmine. Nothing about him made his death meaningful in any way. He was the most fleshed out in the third installment and oddly enough that's the one he lived through.
It was his brothers Anthony and Benjamin who were killed in the first two. For the third one the developers had a contest to see whether Clay Carmine would live or die. People bought t-shirts to vote (all proceeds went to a kids' charity). Fortunately merciful heads prevailed.

Yeah, I even almost bought one of those keep him alive shirts. I just meant from a story writing perspective (which maybe I'm a little more attuned to because I took a bunch of writing classes in college and now overanalyze stuff) the life and death of Carmine (all three Carmines) had no real meaning to it. The deaths of Lt. Kim, Tai Kaliso, and even Adam Fenix and Dom (by the way I thought those two deaths were rather poorly written, especially considering how freaking important those two characters were) had meaning, had emotion, advanced the story, and had purpose. The first two Carmine's deaths felt to me about as meaningless as the unnamed soldiers in the helicopters or the ones who get killed by the new Locust enemy to show it off. Like the guy wearing the red shirt in Star Trek. And while I think throwaway deaths are lazy writing, at least they are often used on throwaway characters. Why bother to make me care about Carmine at all if the writers only have him exist to kill him? I think once the votes were tallied and they realized Carmine was going to live, the writers put actual effort into his character. Which, by the way, would have made his death mean something if he had died. I talk about Star Trek, but I’ve actually never seen an episode of that show. Ever.

Nice, what'd exactly did you do to the floors? Like pull up all the boards and what not, or just clean 'em and stuff? Details are always interesting to me. And sweet that you've got friends from Australia comin' in, wish I had friends in far places. Furthest friend I've got out there is in Edinburgh, Scotland, but she's goin' there for school and will be back in Nor Cal after a few more years.

NY: It's fast, crazy and awesome all at the same time. It'd be great if I had a job so that I wouldn't have to worry about the apartment that I'm searching for right now, but that is the reality of the situation. I did pack up and leave everything behind, so it's really just time for me to buckle down and get this job thing over with. But I have been exploring the city a lot and seeing a lot of the different sites. It's really cool here. Things are actually old, like hundreds of years as opposed to decades and such. Still, I do miss Cali and my fam. But once I get a job I'll be able to focus on other things. Hell, even if I started up college that would be better than nothin'.

Pretty much. But yea, Im sad to live in a society that does that. You should have to submit your info to it, instead of it just having it.

Reverse phone book with first initial, last name, and address, fine. But credit score? Marriage status? Age? Cmon!

I'm thinking what you're going for here would be counterproductive to your ultimate goal. If a woman is bragging about something--anything--and someone else takes the wind out of her sails, chances are any opportunity for friendship will evaporate on the spot. Just sayin'.

I dunno. One trait of mine I've been praised for in the women I've befriended is my unashamed compulsion to tell them the truth. I'm not sure if you know this, being a woman and all, but most men tell women what they want to hear way too often. I tell them the truth and they appreciate that, even if they don't like what I'm saying.

For example, Betty is moving to Seattle because she wants to be adventurous. She is going to get back together with an ex-boyfriend she was always fighting with who I think, though I have no proof, hits her. She's doing this because moving to Seattle is adventurous and risk taking and the kind of thing a free spirit does. This is similar to when my best friend Trey moved to New York to get a job in Finance with his degree in Communication Studies; or when my ex-girlfriend moved to New York to get a job in Engineering with a degree in Psychology.

It was a dumb idea when Trey did it; it's a dumb idea now when Betty is doing it. Everyone else tells Betty they are proud of her, I tell her she is doing something stupid, there are plenty of other ways to be a free spirit that are actually freer, and that she will end up helpless in a city where the only person she knows and the person she depends on to support her is also the reason she's in the Seattle ER telling the doctor she "fell down some stairs."

I'm not sugar-coating it or telling her what she wants to hear, and she appreciates that. Honesty is a good thing, I want honesty. I just want sarcastic honesty.

...She's still moving to Seattle (and will probably call me and cry when she realizes the mistake she made) but she at least has one friend who tells her her terrible idea is terrible
      .

Hehe, I just read my previous post to you and have pretty much still said the same to everybody that's asked me about that f-ing film. I love being a critic.

Ugh, I think it won't matter how much I really want to. I'll never be as much of a gamer as I was five/six years ago. *sigh* How I miss it so...

    • Suto_Griff

Do I think you personally need to see the film in order to enjoy it further. No. Do I think it's a theme park ride wrapped up in a theater based movie? Yes. And if that's your candy, then go for it. It'll be lots of fun. But don't expect an AMAZING film just because it's made so much money.

James Cameron knows how to capture the hearts of simple minded people. IE: Titanic and Avatar.

Are there good themes in his films? Yes. Do they say it better than most? No.

Watch Ferngully and Dances With Wolves and you'll get a much better selection of films along with better writing, acting, and cinematography. Even with Avatar's advanced technology they don't do anything special.

Ugh... I really need a soap box...

My oldest brother was quite obsessed with getting the best shots so he talked to a professional photographer about what kind of filters he used.

The photographer said he would be out of business pretty quick if he bought all these commercial filters, so he made his effects
other ways. So for soft focusing he did the nylon thing.

A couple of my friends had photography businesses, but I never asked them about filters.
Like I said, I mostly prefer to just capture what I see.
