      Internet Censorship

The current government here in Australia have decided that the internet is full of too much evil stuff and are trying their hardest to pass a bill that will allow them to forcibly censor the internet, Chinese and North Korea style. A pro-censorship politician has already complained to the likes of Google and YouTube for not censoring their respective sites and content here in Aus. Said politician used China, North Korea and such other beacons for freedom and democracy in his attempts to convince these sites but fortunately all the companies he has complained to have told him where to shove his censorship requests.

I don't have a problem with people censoring their own internet voluntarily but everyone being forced by the government is a bit over the top for what is considered part of the western world. The process of censoring the entire internet is predicted to slow internet access by at least 4 times slower than it is now. Apart from this, there will certainly be sites that will be censored that shouldn't be. Being in high school I experience how terrible the censorship system that they plan to use is. Often in class we are given a list of sites to research from and at least one third of the sites that teachers give to us are blocked.

I am unable to vote as I am underage but I sincerely hope that this bill is shot down in a landslide as I do not want to have to break the law every time I visit sites I usually visit, such as this one. The idea of censoring the internet is completely the opposite to what the internet is and what it is for.

Left 4 Dead 2 Aussie style

Valve went completely over the top with its censorship of Left 4 Dead 2 for Australian distribution by removing almost all of the blood and gore effects, even removing effects that were in the original Left 4 Dead. The reason for the censorship was because for some reason Australia doesn't have an R18+ rating, and the melee weapons in Left 4 Dead 2 are considered too violent and extreme for our highest rating, MA15+. Games like Madworld and even Borderlands were considered lean enough for an MA15+ rating.

I mention Borderlands because of the flame effects of Incendiary weapons were allowed while the Incendiary rounds of Left 4 Dead 2 were considered to violent. For some reason our classification board decides that bandits are OK to slaughter and set alight but zombies are way out of bounds. I dislike that our classification board have decided that the average gamer or parent is incapable of making a judgment of their own.

The absence of gore and blood spray from L4T2 make it seem less scary and less in-your-face. While I don;t think that all games need excessive violence to be good, I feel that by removing most of the gore from a zombie-apocalypse game basically reverses what the game is trying to achieve. It is a much less stressful experience when bodies of zombies you "kill" disappear before they hit the ground. I think it would have been better for Valve to have removed a small amount of blood effects and get knocked back a second time by the ratings board than to have over-compensated as badly as they have done.

  • About Me

Just a nerdy dude on the internet. I love my video games, RvB, sport and music and am a big fan of wasting long hours of the day in front of the computer too. I will accept all random friend requests, and feel free to shoot me a message or whatever.

Yeah my dad worked in Cork for about six months when I was 8 and I came over to visit him for a couple of weeks. That was years ago though, so I don't remember it that much.
