    • RTX pass acquired!

Wasn't sure I'd be able to afford it at first... and then just said fuck it. I'd rather be optimistic and work towards being there, and worst case scenario I'll sell my pass and try again next year.

Hope to see everyone in July!

Sorry this is a bit long. Anyway...

Probably a year-&-a-half ago or so I posted in here about how my boss had started the process of trying to get me officially hired by the company I work for, as I had been a contract/"temp" for a couple of years.

Well, after a lot of hurry up and wait and beaurocratic red tape, it finally happened. I officially started on February 1st (though my employee orientation is tomorrow). And with that comes a $6/hr raise, paid holidays & vacation time, full health/dental/vision benefits, a retirement package, and a much more accurate/significant job title.

It's essentially everything I'd been praying for over the past six or seven years: financial stability and the monetary freedom to pursue things I love and/or hobbies, the ability to care for myself if I'm sick or my back injury flares up, working somewhere I'm actually appreciated and wanted, and some sense of job security.

And I am completely overwhelmed by it all.

It's surreal and strange and amazing and ridiculous all at the same time, and I can't wrap my head around it. It's going to cause some huge changes in my life. And I'm not totally sure if I'm prepared to handle them. It's making it hard for me to be happy about it or feel that weight I've been carrying lift off my shoulders, to be honest.

I get my first paycheck as an actual employee on the 26th (and it will cover two pay periods), so I won't know what any of this actually means until sometime in March. Maybe that's what it is. Who knows. Hopefully once that's out of the way I'll be able to really enjoy all of this finally.

    • Buff Buddies Weeks 1-3 Update: So far.... no good

In order for this all to work, I need to be brutally honest with myself (and as a result all of you who bother to read this). And to be brutally honest, I've gotten off to a terrible start.

I've mainly been having issues with my diet. The combination of the foot injury I mentioned in my last update, a ridiculously busy schedule, and some personal issues had left me in a not-quite-so-good place. Unfortunately, one of my bad habits when I'm feeling down is to eat the worst things imaginable. Because of this, instead of losing any weight since this started I've actually gained two pounds so far.

      Can I get a do-over?

Anyway. In an effort to get myself back on track, I started searching for a new source of motivation to help propel me towards my goals. It took a little while, but while I was loafing around on the couch one evening inspiration struck in the weirdest of places.

I am a huge Oakland Athletics (A's) fan. Every year, like most other MLB franchises, the A's host a FanFest event. I was sitting there somewhat spaced out, and found myself looking at a couple of photos I have of myself with some of the players from the past two FanFests. I realized after looking for a moment that there is a noticeable difference in my weight between the 2014 photo and the 2015 photo (I had lost 10 pounds between the two). FanFest would normally coincide with the end of Buff Buddies, so I decided that that's what I'll use as my motivation.

Maybe it's shallow, but who cares. I'm doing this for me and my health, anyway. But that's my new goal: I want there to either be a noticeable slimming, or at least no noticeable weight gain, between my 2015 and 2016 photos (assuming I'm able to get through the insane lines to get one).

      Starting over in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...!

Why is it that the day before a vacation will always be the workday from Hell?

      2 1/2 hours to go..

    • Buff Buddies...?

So, to be honest, I was planning on posting this journal a few days ago. After being a part of Fit4RTX this year and how awesome and motivating that was, I am super excited about participating in Buff Buddies!

....or at least I was, until I ate shit walking up the driveway to work and sprained my foot.

After thinking about it for a bit, I've decided I'm not going to let my foot deter me. It's 16 weeks, so even if I have to get off to a much slower start than I'd like I still think I'll be able to get something out of it.

Here are my (slightly modified) personal goals:

      1. Cut out soda, cut out most dairy, and drink more water
      2. Make food at home more often and/or eat out less
      3. Once my foot is healthy, I want to start walking to the train station to get to/from work every day. It's about 1.4 miles, and is an easy way for me to incorporate fitness into my daily routine.
      4. Lose 5-10lbs (pending how active I'm able to be all things considered)

Buff Buddies coincides with Fitbit's "FitForGood" challenge (11/9-11/20), which is a charity event where your steps help decides which of three charities receives which portion of a $1million donation. I've pledged my steps to the American Heart Association, which having two uncles and a stepmother who have had bypass surgery is close to my heart (no pun intended). Hopefully I'll be able to actually take steps before the end of it.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's stories, and comparing how we all feel at the end. Wish me luck!

Recently I decided to start listening to all of the old RT Podcasts - from Drunk Tank #1 until the present - during my commute to and from work.

Last night I had a dream about Gus and Geoff recording an episode of the podcast,

Maybe I should take a break for awhile....

      1) I realize I never finished my thoughts on RTX... suffice it to say, I had a wonderful time and met some incredible people!

      2) OMG that episode of RVB was AMAZING.

      That is all

The last two days (Jack's incredible event at K1 Speed + RTX Day One) have been two of the most chaotic, crazy, and fun days of my life.

I can't wait to see what the weekend holds

Thanks to a fairly epic screw up by my ISP, I get a second full week without internet at home! So exciting!

      ...... ugh ):
